Nearly six months ago, I purchased a one terabyte desktop hard-drive to allow me to back up the contents of my laptop. That hard drive cost little over sixty five pounds but due to the floods in Thailand and an on-going shortage of hard drives (the reasons for you can read online if you desire) the cost of external storage has went up somewhat since then. It is therefore more important than ever to ensure you get value for money. Very recently I found myself looking for another storage solution, an external hard-drive that I could use simply to backup my digital photography collection (almost one hundred gigabytes in size). I was looking for something that not only gives me the storage space, but something that also was stylish, fast, and portable. It's safe to safe that I found everything I needed and more in the form of this 320Gb Toshiba Hard Drive. It's small and is host powered so it is easy to carry if you're out and about without the need for additional power cables. It's stylish as the case is made from aluminium, this helps to disperse heat from the actual hard drive contained within and makes the drive seem robust as opposed to the more common plastic casing. It's almost silent in operation (helped by the fan less design) and makes very little effect on my laptops battery life. As with all external hard drives it's easy to use thanks to plug and play, and while the supplied USB cable is a bit short it is still long enough to allow the device to sit on your desk far enough away from your laptop or computer. While a cable a bit longer would have been better it's important to remember that at the end of the day this is designed as a portable hard drive and having a lengthy cable would be counterproductive. It seems to be fast enough in both reading and writing speeds. I have transferred both small files back and forward (JPEG's) as well as larger RAW files and have been pretty impressed with the speed of doing so. Unless you're looking for a USB3 device (newer technology that's faster than the current version two) or really need a large volume of storage then I highly recommend this Toshiba drive, it's a drive that won't let you down. For the current cost it does offer value for money and alongside everything else is a steal. It also comes in brushed silver should you desire a different finish to black. After buying this about 9 months ago, I have to say I'm very happy with my purchase. The Toshiba StorE Steel 320 GB at the time of purchase was around £50, which was about the price of all hard drives in this range. In the box comes the hard drive itself, instruction manual, leather case, twin usb cable. The manual includes warranty and some information about the hard drive, setting it up etc. The leather case is surprisingly good quality and would usually be priced at £20 in the shops. It's a nice addition as it keeps the hard drive clean and less likely to scratch. The usb cable splits into two, one end goes into the hard drive and the other end has two usb 2.0 connectors. One is for accessing the information inside and the other for powering the hard drive. I don't always need to have both inserted as it does work with one alone. However for me it's slightly short and I have to place the drive right next to my laptop or pc whenever using. It's not too much of a problem but I would recommend buying a longer one. Onto the hard drive itself, it has performed well since I bought it. Upon opening the package, I discovered a stunning looking drive which sets itelf apart from the competition. It feels light without losing any strength and solidity. However the shiny surface is actually a drawback. If you don't always use the case provided, the metal attracts a lot of fingerprints making it look messy at times. This is easy to clean with a cloth but eventually gets tiresome. Once inserting it to your computer it pops up with an option page- either to use the Toshiba software or simply treat it as a normal hard drive. I have never used the software so cannot comment on it. However to date I have had no problems storing pictures, music and work as I drag and drop it directly into the hard drive. I have heard lot of portable hard drives break easily but this one has done it's job since I got it. The 320gb of space is large enough and I am satisfied so far. Overall, this pocket-sized drive has served me well and is a great addition to your storage collection.
With no prior experience of HDs, I was reading through various reviews on this site before making my choice and choosing this model. The 1TB Seagate drive I'd originally had my eye on has enough disconcerting feedback for me to have decided against purchasing it. As for this Toshiba HD, it was a lot smaller than I had expected in terms of size, and a case is included for it which is great for me as I am going to be buying a few more of these HDs and labelling them and storing them; this will definitely facilitate the process. I found the processes of installing the drive, and of transferring data onto it, every easy. Because it's steel, it gets super hot if you're transferring large volumes of stuff to it. It's a very classy, discreet black, although it does pick up fingerprints, so be aware of this. Overall, thoroughly recommended and I'll be coming back for more. One annoying thing is that sometimes, it won't work unless you use BOTH of its USB ports in the computer, and this lead to me needing to buy a 7-way USB hub because the netbook I was using it with only had 2 ports, not located near enough eachother to be able to be used together. This is why I've removed a star from the original review, which I posted on Amazon under the same name but without this additional paragraph.
It is the minimalist and elegant design that makes the StorE steel unique. The casing is made up of a glossy, scratch and smudge resistant stainless steel design. It is small enough to fit easily into a laptop carry case. Furthermore the drives are very lightweight. Above all there is no need for an external power supply as StorE steel is powered via USB interface.
