“ Clickfree HD801 - Hard drive - 160 GB - external - 2.5" - USB - 5400 rpm - buffer: 8 MB „
I will begin by saying that I am not a computer expert so don't expect an expert review here! I am a computer user and I know what I need and what I want it to do - how it actually does it - well that's way above my head. To begin my story at the beginning I had a very unstable laptop that kept overheating and shutting down. I could then not reopen it and had to pass it to my husband (who IS a computer expert) to get it all back working again. At the time I had a very small storage device which would hold my Excel and Word documents but nothing else. I now have a new laptop but I really wanted to be able to back up the whole thing files, e mails, photographs etc. Before I had the chance to buy myself such a device a friend of mine said that he had one that he no longer used and that I could have it - bless him. I have to confess that I was very pleased with my freebie as cash is at a real premium at the moment whilst my husband is unemployed. I have looked online to see the current price and can only find this specific device available from the USA for about 100 dollars. The device itself is silver and about the size of a Smartphone and is called the Clickfree Automatic Backup Drive HD801 - 160GB. It comes in a nice solid box complete with a soft leather protective cover and a cable with which to connect it to your computer. I assume that it originally came with a set of instructions too but they weren't with mine by the time it got to me. The really good thing is that I didn't need any instructions - the setup is so simple. I just had to plug it into my laptop and off it went with a blue light appearing to show me that it was on. The on screen prompts took me through the process quickly and easily and the backup of the whole of my data from my laptop was done in a matter of a minute or so - I was amazed. To be honest so was my husband. The device gave me the choice of when I would like to be reminded to backup and this reminder appears on my laptop at the pre-arranged intervals to remind me - I have a terrible memory you see. Then I just plug it back in and set it going. It then backs up my computer - each time in double quick time. I have checked that the files on the device are all correct and am happy with that too. It can backup files from more than one computer labelling each of them with a unique identifier but this won't be needed as hubby already has a large external hard drive to back up all his work files. In conclusion I would definitely recommend this drive as it is neat, fast and accurate and that is exactly what I wanted. So there you have it - a computer type review from a not techie - I hope it has been useful.
One of those items you never know you need until your PC gives you the 'blue screen', an external hard drive is essential for saving you time, money and heartache when the inevitable happens and your PC dies. With that in mind and my experience with them at work, I opted for the Clickfree HD801 160GB. Surprisingly, the choice of storage devices is a minefield. Initially, my thinking was that only the size and OS would be determining factors. Not so, accessing speeds are undoubtedly the most important feature for this type of device. After all, what is the point of putting all your files on this only to find it will take hours or even days to retrieve data? Thankfully, the HD801 does not enter that horrifying category as it will upload your data quickly and easily. Usage is easy, no software is needed, no installation. The best comment I have heard about this unit is that the most difficult part of using it, is getting it out of the plastic box! Then you plug it in and you are done. The backup starts automatically and will let you know it is done. On each separate occasion it backs up your PC, it will copy only the new files, cutting down on unnecessary wastage. It can back up more than 350 different file types and can do so from ten different computers. Each one would be allocated its own compartmentalised section. For advanced users, there is the option of customizing the software to tailor for different uses. Measuring 115mm x 17mm x 76mm weighing 180g, it is available in just the one colour white with blue highlights. The hard drive is a 2.5'' SATA operating at 5400 RPM. It has a cache of 8MB and will operate with any Windows variant available in today's market, connection is achieved through a USB 2.0/ 1.1 port and comes complete with cable. As a storage device with the ability to save your data securely and allow easy retrieval, the HD801 passes with flying colours. It comes with a 1 year warranty and can be bought from amazon.co.uk for a little under £70. Should you do so, you will have peace of mind from knowing all your files, treasured family pictures and anything else on your PC is safe and secure.
