expensive epilator but with good results and cheaper than waxing

Painful yet effective hair removal. Do not be fooled, no matter what the manufacturer claims, epilating is painful. You are pulling hair out of your skin - it doesn't matter what they do, they cannot make it pain free. However, once you get used to it, it's definitely worth it. It's very painful the first time you do it, but it gets better each time and soon becomes bearable. The trick is to keep up with it (every week or so) rather than letting hairs grow long again. Hair stays away for longer and re-growth in much finer than when you shave. I especially appreciate this as I'm dark haired and my legs can look stubbly a few hours after shaving, but with this epilator, once the initial redness goes they look great! Pricewise, it's not the cheapest epilator out there, but it works for me, and I don't have to fork out for waxing ever couple of weeks.

Would recommend and would replace existing with same brand

I have only experience waxing once, and that once was enough. As a self confirmed mardy bum and wuss I stuck rigidly to shaving. However on being gifted this Silk-Epil for Christmas I managed to get the nerve to give it a whirl. Turns out it's bark is worse than it's bite. It makes a lot of noise and looks quite scary; however I was surprised it lived up to its promises of "comfort" I used this in the shower to help ease any discomfort to start with and now after around 5 months of regular use I can, hand on heart, say I'd never go back to shaving. There is barely any discomfort anymore and I am even doing under arms and bikini line without so much as batting an eye. A quick run down of the positives: *Smooth and hair free for around 2-3 weeks on legs, 2 weeks on bikini line, then it just needs a quick whizz over and all done. *Speed: whilst the first couple of times it took longer, possibly me being overly slow to get every hair, however now I have the hang of it I can go over legs in minutes. *Charge: one full charge lasts ages. I hardly have to charge the epilator at all. *Painless (almost) now as this is my first epilator I cannot really compare, however when I told people I'd received one as a gift they advised me not to use it as it would be very painful, and began to tell me about their experiences. This is certainly not painful to use, and whilst not enjoyable even the first few times are pretty easy to cope with. The only negative is the large amount of ingrown hairs I get. I do find a regular exfoliation in the shower (with exfoliating gloves) does help, however I do have to tweezer several out. This can be a pain, and wasn't something I was expecting however it's not enough of a problem to stop me using it. I will definitely continue to use this and would look to replace with a similar model in the future.

this is an okay epilator at best

The Braun Silk Epil promises us that within a fairly short space of time and little pain that you will have hair free beach ready pins (and anywhere else that you are brave enough to epilate!), promoting thier great epilator with descriptions such as "removes hairs as small as a grain of sand" you would believe that for the pretty hefty price tag that it comes along with that 'this epilator' will surely be 'the one'?!... I am afraid to say in my experience IT IS NOT :( The pro's in my view are that this epilator is nice and lightweight, comfortable to hold, waterproof, looks ultra sleek, the light on the front is fab, comes with various attachments for use on various parts of the body dependant on where you want to epilate (one bikini line / face, one slighlty larger for under arm, and then largest for legs also one for legs with a massager and an attachment that is a hair shaver/trimmer). The con's are IT DOES NOT REMOVE HAIRS AS SMALL AS A GRAIN OF SAND, to epilate successfully and remove as much hair as is possible with this device it takes a considerable amount of time and as such the battery runs out of charge before you have time to finish the task at hand! You are unable to use the epilator whilst it is charging and it is VERY noisy. There have also been a number of occasions where the epilator has caught my skin and cut me - OUCH! All in all I think that the product is OK but not worth the price tag, it does not perform miracles and does not leave you hair free - more of a stubble feel to your legs if nothing else.

Great if you are already a fan of epilating or waxing

I've been waxing and using an epilator for the past 15 years. I've always found epilators to be very painful and time consuming and only really useful for getting at the odd stray hair in between waxes. My epilator was really old and I'd heard that they'd improved a lot in recent years so when I say this on special offer in boots I thought it was worth trying. I don't want to lie, epilating still hurts but this moves much quicker than my old machine so the pain is reduced. My favourite thing about this epilator is the fact you can use it in the bath or shower. This significantly reduces any pain and means you can epilate as part of your daily routine so that it doesn't take very long. If you have a lot of growth on your legs it can still be time consuming to get them silky smooth but they stay like that for much longer than shaving. The epilator comes with various attachments for epilating different areas but to be honest I always ended up using the same one and I've now lost most of them. Being able to change the head from an epilator to a shaver is really good as it means that you don't need another appliance. I haven't been able to find any spare parts on the internet to replace the various attachments that I have either lost or broken so if anyone has any links please pass them on.

Great product... If you are going to try epilating I'd recommend this!!

A friend told me together an epilator a while ago and really really recommended it... 'much better, easier and cheaper than waxing'. I was really nervous about using my epilator when I first got it as I had heard it can be extremely painful but hey I thought I'd give it ago. I had read loads and loads of reviews and the Braun silk epilator seemed to come out on top. I don't think an epilator can ever replace waxing to be honest but it is a great money saving way to get exactly what you want if your brave enough!! You have to be extremely brave the first few times on your legs and I would not recommend on the under arm!!! The good thing with this epilator is it comes as a dual action with a really great razor too... Which gives you the option of a trim or complete shave which is great! It is really really simple to use and has easily adjustable heads depending on whether you are shaving or epilating. It comes with shaving which are really useful and is recharable so you dont need o worry about batteries. The only thing i found disapointing was the charger was only or a shaving socket but i managed to buy an adapter in boots for 99p! If you want to give epilating ago I would definately recommend this epilator as it has been great for me, however I have used it more frequently as a razor than an epilator... Probably because I'm a wimp!! Good luck :)

All in all a good first time epilator that wasn't too painful to use!

I was quite excited to receive my first epilator for Christmas this year, although also a little apprehensive when thinking about the pain. This Braun Silk-epil comes with both a razor and an epilator, which you can use together. It's also fully waterproof, meaning you can use it in the shower rather than after your shower. I first tried this dry and although I would say it was a little uncomfortable to start with, I soon got used to the pain. The epilator managed to remove even the shortest of hairs on my legs, missing only the very finest (I have since read that all epilators struggle with these). When finished my legs had no red marks and felt nice and smooth. The only problem is the head itself is quite large and inflexible and makes doing around your ankles and knees quite difficult. I suppose that it's handy it comes with a razor too so you can touch up these areas. I have since tried epilating in the shower and found that once wet this epilator was less efficient in terms of hair removal and also left me with red spots where the hairs had been removed. In terms of cleaning, being a waterproof model means you can rinse everything under water, but it also comes with attachments for dry cleaning. Other positives about this model is that it's rechargeable so you are not restricted by a cord or cable and can happily remove your hair in front of the tv, although how the rest of your family will feel about this I don't know. I also found that it didn't make that much noise when I was using it. I was however, shocked when I saw that it retails for around £169.99, so make sure you look out for deals and grab a bargain. All in all a good first time epilator that wasn't too painful to use!

        Great product.

I have used epilators in the past (bog basic ones) and have always been pleased with the results. I had some shopping vouchers and thought it would be a good purchase. This epliator unlike older models actually shaves as well as removes hairs. It has a wet or dry feature which is very useful. Normally i would bathe and then use the epilator but this feature allowed me to do it whilst showering, resulting in me being pain free...big bonus! It also has a variety of changable heads to allow you to epilate facial hair, under arms, bikini lines etc. Its head is on a slight pivot so like shavers it follows the contours of your legs and gets 75% of hairs after the first swipe. I am really pleased with this product, it has changed the way i feel about epilation by making it pain free and a lot easier to use.

An efficient epilator with an unnecessary twist

The Product The Braun Silk-épil 7 Dual Epilator is the world's first epilator to combine the effects of epilation and shaving in one stroke. It is fairly widely available both on the high street and online and whilst it has an RRP of £169.99 many places are currently offering it at a sale price of around £100. How I Came to Own It As a BzzAgent (a member of bzzagent.co.uk) I am regularly given the opportunity to join campaigns whereby I trial new products in return for giving feedback to the manufacturers and spreading the word about the product. I've been using a Braun epilator as my hair removal method of choice for years, but the one I had was looking close to giving up on me, so the invitation to the Braun Silk-épil 7 campaign couldn't have come at a better time for me. I received the epilator and it's accessories, along with several replacement heads, replacement blades and shaving gel, entirely free. What's In the Box Included as standard with this epilator are a charging stand and cable, a 'Smoothing Cap' (with Gillette Venus blades), an epilation cap (for epilation only), a cap for sensitive areas (for epilation only), a cleaning brush, and a little drawstring bag to keep all the accessories in. A big disappointment for me with this epilator is the lack of an electric shaver attachment. I used the shaver attachment of my old epilator for my bikini area and so because this one doesn't have one I've had to invest in a separate bikini trimmer, when I'd really rather have it all in one device. The Aesthetics In all honesty if I'd had to buy a new epilator I probably would have chosen this one based on looks alone. I'm a sucker for good looks and nice colours and for me this epilator looks perfect. The epilator itself is white with a sparkly panel on the main body, but it has a 'no-slip grip' which fits over it and is a gorgeous translucent turquoisey blue colour. There are also two small panels of turquoise on the front of the epilator where the controls and the light are. The charging stand is a white part-dome in which the epilator stands upright. The shape is sleek and curvy and the overall design is very modern and elegant looking. It looks great whilst not being so obtrusive that it sticks out like a sore thumb in my bathroom. The Features *40 Tweezers with Close-grip technology - The tweezers have been engineered to close at the optimal angle and grip hair even closer to the skin for better removal of hairs as short as 0.5mm. *Smoothing cap with Gillette Venus technology - Integrated triple blade razor follows behind the epilator, capturing stubborn hairs and lifting away dead skin cells to reveal fresh new skin. *Pivoting head - The flexible head can pivot up to 15 degrees forward and back, allowing it to better adapt to the contours of the body for more comfort and maximum thoroughness. *SoftLift tips - Designed to effectively lift even flat-lying hairs and guide them into the tweezers for removal. *Smartlight - The Smartlight shines light onto even the finest hairs, allowing removal of hairs that would otherwise go unnoticed. *Wet & Dry - The epilator is designed specifically for use in warm water. It can be used in the bath or shower in combination with shave gel for extra comfort. *Cordless use - Gives you the freedom to epilate whenever and wherever you like. Up to 30 minutes of operation from an hours charging. *2 Speed settings - Select speed 1 for extra gentle epilation, or speed 2 for extra efficient epilation. *Waterproof and washable - The sealed body allows it to be used and cleaned under running water for better hygiene. The Ergonomics The curves of the unit are perfect to fit neatly and securely in my hand, and it feels very comfortable to use and hold. The removable 'no-slip grip' gives extra grip to the otherwise smooth unit, which is essential for ensuring a secure hold when using it the bath or shower. The unit is considerably heavier than my previous epilator, presumably due to having to house a battery as it is rechargeable whereas my old one wasn't, but the weight isn't enough to cause any problems or feel uncomfortable, and in fact just gives it a more high quality feel. The flexible head allows the unit to glide smoothly over all the curves and contours of my body, making light work of even awkward areas such as behind the knees and underarms. In Practise The epilator is very easy to use, the only control being a simple dial. Just turn the dial clockwise to turn it on, one click for the first speed setting and another for the second, and to turn it off or down just turn it anticlockwise. Then it's just a case of running the head over the area you want to epilate. I can't say I really notice any difference between the two speed settings, but it would probably much more noticeable for anyone new to epilating. It is fairly quiet in use and I can happily sit using this whilst watching TV and still hear everything, whereas my old one drowned out pretty much any other noise. This epilator is very effective if used correctly, but if like me you're the impatient type you'll have to reign yourself in before you see the best results. As with any epilator, the key is to work slowly and steadily, allowing the tweezers optimum chance of picking up all of the hairs. Even after epilating for several years I still find it difficult to stop myself from rushing it even though I know I'll just end up with a patchy finish and have to go over it again, meaning it will actually take longer in the end. I do find that it removes even the very shortest of hairs easily and effectively, and as long as I've exfoliated first to remove dead skin cells from the surface, it also picks up flat-lying hairs. It doesn't pick up the finest, fairest hairs, but this is a downfall of epilators in general not just this model. The hairs that it does leave behind, however, are really only the very finest that you cannot feel and would not notice unless specifically looking for them under certain lights. The Gillette Venus blades are also very effective, providing a really close shave and leaving my legs feeling smoother than any other razors I've used. Unfortunately it doesn't work so well in combination with the epilator. The applied pressure needed for optimum results differ for shaving and epilating, so combining the 2 means you can only get the best from one. This head is also quite large and not as flexible as the others, which makes getting a smooth finish on awkward areas such as the knees almost impossible. Wet use is clearly beneficial for the shaving element, helping to minimise irritation and provide a closer shave. On the other hand it only serves to hinder the epilation process, as does the use of shaving gel, which is advised for use with the shaving head. I find with wet use the epilator is able to pick up far fewer hairs, making the process much longer and more arduous, and despite the Smartlight the hairs are much more difficult to see, meaning I'm always left with at least a few hairs that I've missed simply because I've not noticed them. I also find that after wet epilation I'm left with a lot of angry looking red dots where the hair has been removed, a problem I've never had with dry epilation. As I've been epilating for years I don't find the process remotely painful anymore so I can't really comment on how pain-free or otherwise this particular model is, but I would suggest if you are using an epilator for the first time to expect some mild pain or discomfort which will lessen with regular use. Making sure you follow the directions given in the manual on how to epilate effectively will ensure the process is as comfortable as possible. In addition to my legs I have used the epilator on my underarms to great effect, but when attempting to use it on my bikini line it just took off layers of skin rather than removing hair, which is not a remotely pleasant or comfortable experience, so I would definitely not recommend it for use on this area! Cleaning the device is made super-easy by the fact that it's fully waterproof. Switch it on for a few seconds underwater and the tweezers are fully cleaned, detach the heads and rinse each part underwater and they all come up sparkling. And for dry cleaning you have a little brush which can get into all the nooks and crannies, quickly and easily removing any hairs or dirt. The fact that it is rechargeable and I can use it anywhere is a major plus point for me, I hated the limitation the cord on my old epilator imposed on me. I find it holds it's charge really well and even after the low charge warning light starts flashing I still have plenty of time left to finish up, so I've never had the frustration of having to recharge it before I can finish my legs. The Big Claims vs. My Results The biggest claim made about this epilator is that the combined action of epilation and shaving means that after weekly use for four weeks optimal results are achieved and you will then only need to use it monthly to keep your legs perfectly smooth. Well as a natural blonde my body hair is fair and fine but I've always found it grows much quicker than the suggested re-growth times for any hair removal method. Everyone seems to suggest that epilation should leave you smooth and hair-free for 2-4 weeks, but I always find I'm feeling a bit stubbly within a few days, and there's no exception with this. I used it weekly for several months and still found no improvement whatsoever in the re-growth time, so I'd have to say that for me it really didn't live up to it's main big claim. It is also claimed that whilst the epilation function removes hair at the root, causing it to grow back finer and more slowly, the razor function promotes the renewal of the outer layer of skin by removing dead cells, the combined action of the two revealing new, smoother skin. Unfortunately I have not seen any difference in how smooth my skin is after using this when compared with my old epilator, so again it doesn't live up to it's claims for me. The only difference I have noticed between dual and normal epilation is that dual epilation makes my skin itch. The Conclusion Whilst this device is more than adequate as an epilator I firmly believe that other than making my legs itch the integrated razor adds nothing significant to the experience. It seems like innovation for innovation's sake, rather than solving a problem or fulfilling a need. I would definitely recommend Braun epilators, but I would suggest it's not worth paying any extra to have this particular model.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Really great product- has solved all the problems that have previously come with epilation

Several years ago, my Mum convinced me that ditching my trusty Gillete Venus razor and replacing it with a Braun epilator was the way to go. I did as she suggested and found the results with it (a standard dry use Braun epilator) very good, but I always had a few niggles with it; it was quite painful at times, left my legs immediately afterwards resembling a plucked chicken's legs and was quite a lengthy process. Therefore, I was quite intrigued by this new dual epilator, integrating Braun's epilation with Gillete razor blades. I wasn't entirely sure of this concept when I first heard about it. The reason I stopped shaving was so that I wouldn't have bristly regrowth every other day, and I thought that surely some of the regrowth with this epilator would be like that. However, I have been using the epilator for over a month now and have been overall very impressed. I normally shave during the winter months, when it is a bit cold to sit in my bedroom for lengthy periods epilating my legs when no one but my husband is going to be seeing them anyway. So the first time I used it was after several months' shaving and I braced myself for the usual pain of this. I used the epilator in the bath with Gillete shaving foam and actually found it not too painful at all. It did take a good three weeks of epilating once a week to get my legs to the point where they were consistently smooth with finer regrowth, so I do suggest to anyone buying it that they do not expect immediate results with their regrowth! I really like it being able to be used in the bath- the epialtor glides really easily over the skin, even more so with shaving foam. It seems to stop the plucked chicken legs look as well- after epilating my legs are instantly ready to be on show, which is really nice as with my old epilator it did take a good couple of hours for the redness to go down. I have also tried using it out of water, just to see how it compared with my old one. The epilator comes with a different head so that it can be used with the razor attachment, which is good, and I did find that it was more thorough. Something I have been amazed by is how much this new product has quickened up the epilating process. Epilating used to be an uncomfortable 40 minutes or so on my legs, but now I can have my legs done in a virtually painless 10 minutes whilst in the bath or shower, which is fantastic. The epilator is a rechargable unit which slots into a base for charging. It says in the instructions that one full charge will last about half an hour, but I have been using the epilating once a week now (on the normal speed setting) for over a month and haven't yet had the red low battery light come on. So down to what the unique idea behind this new Braun epilator- that with the combined razor, legs stay smoother and regrowth is finer. As I say, after a couple of weeks I was abit sceptical about this idea- I didn't see any immediate change and it was difficult to stretch to even a week withut using it. However, now I am completely converted by the idea. The razor catches the tiny short hairs that the epilator cannot pick up, so that your legs really are velvety smooth after using it. Regrowth really does seem finer with it than with my old epilator. I have been completely won over by this product. It has made hair removal, which for women is always a chore, really quick, easy and painless, with maximum, long lasting results. The only drawback I can see is the price point, but having seen it on several company's websites recently at a discounted price, even this shouldn't put people off buying it, as it really is worth the extra.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          A high quality epilator.

I am a member of a group called BzzAgent. The company allows members try products and appliances (usually for free) in return for their promise to spread word (or buzz) about the products they have tried to friends, family and the online community. My latest BzzAgent Campaign was for this appliance, the new Braun Dual Silk Epilator Model 7891. An epilator, for those that don't know, is a machine that removes unwanted hair from the body by plucking it out. Prior to agreeing to try the product I had never had any experience with epilators and only used regular disposable razors and creams to remove hair. As I say I had never used an epilator before and was quite taken aback by how hi-tech this gadget actually is. Braun say this is their most special epilator yet and after recieving this product I decided to have a peek at other models on the market just to see how this one compared. I was a bit confused by the different models of the Braun epilators on the shelf as they all look virtually the same! You can identify the model number though as it is shown in small writing in the corner of the box. The models also have varying amounts of accessories included in the boxes - this can be identified on the side of the box where it tells you there are 4 accessories with the 7891 model. This model is called the 'Braun Silk-epil 7 Dual Epilator with Gillette Venus Technology for Legs and Body Model 7891 with +4 Accessories'. It's the newest Braun model and is designed to look like previous models. This epilator looks like a large personal shaver, white in colour with a turquoise grip cover and head design. The epilator is quite heavy to hold but the greenish outer plastic , the non slip grip, is fitted with a ridged pattern to stop the gadget from slipping through your fingers. It is a removable non slip grip and you need to be careful not to depress the top part whilst using the machine or the grip will slip. The epilator works when you slide a little button on the front. It has two settings - I and II. The first setting is meant to be the 'gentle' setting whilst the second is described as 'efficient'. When you switch the epilator on it makes a really loud whizzing noise. It sounds like a mini drill and can be quite scary initially. The head of the epilator spins around very quickly. The head is fitted with 40 little tweezers at various points which snap open and shut. Behind the spinning tweezer head there is a Gillette Venus razor. This is what makes this epilator 'dual' as it not only plucks but shaves too. Around the spinning head there is a 'Smoothing Cap' with rubber edging which helps make the head smooth over the skin more easily. The razor has a moisturising strip as well as a rubber buffer. It's a two blade razor and extremely sharp. Whilst I have not cut myself whilst using the epilator normally I was holding the Smoothing Cap attachment to clean it and the blade literally slid into my finger tip and I didn't even realise it, so be careful! The epilator should normally be used with a shaving gel. I was provided by BzzAgent with Satin Care Gel to use. The epilator in it's dual form should be used underwater with or without shaving gel. However, there is an attachment cap head included which means you can use the tweezing head without the razor and this means you can use the epilator both wet and dry. Other attachments include a smaller cap for sensitive areas. If you are using the epilator underwater the 'smart light' on the model helps to show you where to aim the tweezing head. The light is a bright white colour and is a really helpful addition to the model, illuminating the areas where I have covered and those I haven't. The model vibrates a tiny bit in the hand but not enough to make your hand shake. The epilator should be placed along the skin at a 90% angle and then you should move it slowly over the skin. When you use the epilator your hair should be quite short as longer hairs mean it hurts more and it will get more messy! You should remove hair with a regular razor or cream about three days before using the epilator. When I first used the epilator I was a bit shocked. I don't want to lie about what the process feels like - I literally felt like my skin was being cut to ribbons by a million miniature samarai swords. I had to keep pulling the machine away from my legs to check I hadn't actually cut myself. It's very painful but the more you use the epilator the more you get used to it, but even so it's a kind of pain that you have to get used to. After using the epilator on my legs I was left hairless and assumed that most of the hair had been plucked out by the tweezers. On me, where the hair comes out the folicle around it is raised up. This is then caught by the razor and the result can mean very red, dimpled skin that looks like a plucked chicken! The day after using the epilator for the first time my legs looked hairy again. I then realised that a lot of hair is missed by the tweezing hair and is simply cut off by the razor. This means you have to keep focusing on the hair coming through to try and achieve an even result. It is a patchy result though and it means you have to keep using the epilator frequently as hairs regrow at different rates. Braun claim that the dual epilator razor helps to reveal a new layer of skin. I think it's a bit vigorous though and I'm often left red raw. The blade is very sharp. The redness on my skin fades after 24 hours. After getting used to the epilator on my legs I tried doing my underarms but found that the folicles bled when the hairs were pulled out so have been unable to continue using the model here. The epilator comes with a charging stand. The plug has only two prongs so you might need an adapter plug if you are in the UK. The model comes with a little cleaning brush which is helpful for removing any hair that is stuck to the head. I find it really easy to clean the model. I actually just usually need to take the smoothing cap off and rinse the head. The smoothing cap should be changed approximately every six months - the razor blade is fitted with a blue strip that gradually turns white to indicate that it needs replacing. To be honest I have mixed feelings about this epilator. My sister bought a different brand epilator a couple of years ago and compared to hers this Braun model looks like something from the future. It is seriously high quality in terms of design. However I would have preferred a slightly slimmer body on the model for an easier hold. Everything you need is included in this package though - attachment heads, charger stand, cleaning brush. The model has great features - soft rubber edging on the cap, moisturising strip on the razor, bright guiding light, easy to assemble parts. However, the level of pain takes a lot of getting used to. I have started to 'enjoy' the sensation on my legs in a kind of masochistic way. I have found that I have had to use the epilator more than the brand claim you need to though. I find that a great proportion of hair is simply shaved off by the razor rather than tweezered out. My hair right now, after a few weeks of use, is quite patchy and the re-growth needs attention to avoid any problems like ingrowing hairs. I think that if I am able to eventually achieve an even result and am able to cut down on using the epilator then it will be worth using in the long run. Braun claim you will eventually only need to use the model every 2-3 weeks which is a lot less hassle than having to shave every day! This epilator retails at an eye watering price of £169.99. If you are serious about finding a long term solution to hair removal then I would recommend trying this model as I think it provides you with a lot of features and accessories that improve the epilating experience.
