This is my second Braun silkepil, I have been epilators for around 10 years. I only upgraded to this one because I wanted one I could use wet and dry. The old one was still going strong after many years of frequent use!
Once the battery is charged you can use this cordless in the bath or shower, or dry. The wet version has a head with a razor, which is supposed to 'mop up' the hairs that don't get epilated. However, I don't really like this method, as the re growth is quick and stubbly. The dry method works brilliantly for me, especially if I keep up to it every couple of weeks. I'm not sure i can believe the claim it can get hairs as short as a grain of sand, but it is very quick to use, I would say 5 minutes each leg for a good epilate. It does hurt at first, but barely tickles now. I like the light which highlights any little hairs you've missed. The charge keeps well. I can't say it eels my legs smooth for 4 weeks but its so much better than shaving and I only need to use it weekly to fortnightly for pretty smooth legs. I haven't tried the sensitive head for bikini and facial areas but I probably will. It is easy to clean and comes in a small bag to keep it all together.
The most expensive freebie I have recieved to date would be my Braun epilator that the Savvy Circle sent to me last year and I'm guessing I qualified as I had anwsered truthfully that I had no experiance in these scary little things and would be unsure if I would... I suppose they saw me as the perfect candidate to sway me to the dark side! I have owned this for more than 6 months now and believe I can give a more accurate review now based on its reliability, durability and uses as opposed to when I first got this.
I generally have a strong threshold for pain - give me a tattoo or body piercing and I will not flinch even though one of my biggest fears is needles... but hair removal is another story. My prefered method is just regular shaving although I have tried waxing in the past and ran for the hills after just one strip - to me its completely different to other pain. I was so happy to be accepted on to the Braun epilator trial and that I got to keep it after it finished and couldnt wait to try it out... however at the time the hair on my legs was quite long and I didnt want to try it out first on long hair due to the pain I knew I would suffer on my first time... So I had to go back to my regular method of shaving and wait a few days for some hair to grow back before trying it.
What do you get?
For a freebie it really wasnt shabby at all! For those in the dark with epilators, this is simpy a device which works in the same way as shaving but is something you can do at home away from the beauticians - for free! The device pulls the hair by the root using the 40 tiny tweezers which are located in the head - like waxing, by pulling away by the root it is claimed that you dont need to epilate as often as someone would need to shave which you normally need to do every couple of days. By epilating you can get away with not doing it again for 1-2 weeks.
The epilator comes packaged in a black cardboard box with the device protected by a plastic mould which is visable from the front of the box. The contents inside the box include a number of changable heads for the epilator including:
* Shaver head (my personal favourite as it tends to work better on legs)
* Trimmer cap (not one I have used but I suppose its useful if you want to just trim the hair)
* Efficiency cap (not one I have had any use out of)
* Sensitive area cap (I have used this twice on the bikini line so far)
* Facial cap (which I have used a few times on stray dark hairs on my face)
Other bits that you get inside the box is a pull string pink waterproof travel bag for the epilator, a small brush to clean the hair away from the epilator and a charging cable attached to a european shaver plug. In order to charge it up I had to buy an adaptor so I could charge it in a standard UK socket in my house but these can be picked up fairly cheap - I got mine on Amazon for less than £1 with free P+P and has not failed me yet.
Another added bonus for me that other buyers of this epilator may not have got was recieving 5 packets each containing 16 pre-epilation wipes from Braun/Olay which you are supposed to use before taking this to your skin to help moisturise and help the appearance of your skin after use.
The epilator looks really good in comparrison to others in the sense that its plan white in colour and other areas such as the setting dial are silver/grey - I dont like the look of other epilators that are white with full bits of other colours such as pink and blue as they certainly make it look cheap and this one from Braun really does look like an expensive one - which it is! Many other epilators I have seen are a lot shorter and thicker making it uncomfortable to hold whereas this one is longer and skinny and fits very nice into the palm of your hand.
At the top there is a round light which is grey coloured when turned off but when in use if its on a low battery or charging it will flash red in colour to let you know. I think this is a great feature compared to others as I could imagine there is nothing worse than it running out of charge and there is nothing on there to let you know this before hand... and also like some other epilators you can actually use this whilst its on charge which is great.
The detachable heads can be changed with ease by pushing in the button at the back - it simply comes off with a bit of tugging. However all the changable heads are made out of a thin plastic compared to the body of the epilator and I do fear being too rough will cause damage to the clips so this is always something to be careful with.
There is also a dial which means you can adjust the speed of the epilator accordingly - the three settings on the dial are to turn off, setting 1 (which is slow) and setting 2 which is faster. I personally prefer setting 2 as it gets it over with a lot quicker! On the dial there is two sections of settings - one at the top one at the bottom and both sections do the same things to turn on and off.
There are two buttons at the top to remove the changable heads and also to take the full top off which is great for when it starts getting really clogged up with hair - and you can use the small brush provided to do this although its very hard to clean in my opinion. You can make this a little easier by running under water as the epilator is advertised for wet and dry use but you can honestly spend a lifetime trying to remove all the hair from it.
I had a feeling before I first turned it on that it would be loud... and my god it is loud... the best way you can describe the noise is a very loud "ZZZMMMMMMMMM" and does tend to quieten down a little when actually using it against your skin. Having this epilator makes me really glad I live on my own with a 6 year old as I imagine if I still lived at home with my parents and I was trying to privately epilate in my room or the bathroom they would get the wrong idea and think I was being naughty with a very loud sex toy! Nightmare... so always be wary when using due to the noise and who it may disturb!
I was set on trying this out on my legs for the first time rather than any other part of my body such as armpits or bikini line as the reviews I read online were simply terrifying! Pretty much everyone says the same thing about epilating... that it really does hurt and you shouldnt kid yourself about the pain you are about to go through and they are right. As per advice I gained from the reviews and from friends who have tried these, I tried it for the first time in the bath to take advantage of the fact this epilator works in wet conditons as well as dry. The reason for this is because the hot water will open your pours in the bath therefor making the process a hell of a lot less painful although it was still very mind blowing sore. I have not dunked the epilator right to the bottom of the bath intentionally before for the fear of breaking it if it goes too far but once I did drop it accidently and got it straight out and it still works so in a durable sense - you get what you pay for and I dont think it would break very easily. Also out the bath I have accidently dropped this many times on hard floor and nothing has fell off or stopped working so it wins points from me for this.
What I did notice the first time and times in future is that having wet skin can cover up still hairy patchs of skin that you have missed and annoyingly you dont really notice how bad it is until after you get out the bath. This is one of the things I hate about this epilator in the sense that you dont really miss any areas with shaving and its so easy to do with this device.
Another gripe for me that I have noticed everytime I have used the epilator is how red and blotchy it makes my skin after use. As per advice, I usually use one of the pre-epilation wipes before use leave it 30-60 minutes to let it sink in, then get in a bath to open my pours. So in my opinion I do everything in my power to stop this happening however due to my skin type which can often be sensitive this is not enough to stop it from happening. Another poor point for me would be the amount of ingrown hairs the device causes. With shaving I do get ingrown hairs if Im in a rush and shave in the wrong direction and I do not do anything different with this epilator but it does seem to make it worse. Anyone who has suffered ingrown hairs due to epilating or shaving will tell you how horrible they look as it often leaves huge puss filled spots which do not look attractive in the slightest and really bad ones can be so painful.
I have attempted to do my bikini line just once - and I dont think I would ever do it again. We all know the skin in that area is probably one of the most sensitive areas on the body and an epilator certainly puts the sensitivity to the test... and no amount of pre-epilation wipes will help. Its unbarable... and for the one tiny section I did, it did cause a painful ingrown hair... I wont try it again in a hurry. On to armpits - although I have tried this due to this curved bumpy area of your body I think its very hard to get the device that close to your skin and again does leave the area patchy as well as sore... and you can forget leaving anti-perspirant afterwards as it stings like a b*tch! In my honest opinion I can only usually bare using this on my legs, not any other part of my body.
I do sometimes suffer from dark hairs sprouting up around my chin area from time to time. I really hate it and in the past I have just shaved the area but doing this does make it worse. I have used the epilator on that area of my face using the suitable head for the job but in my opinion its very scary turning this on and putting it so close to your face that its not something I do very often. However it is effective in the sense that as it pulls the hair from the root, like your legs it does leave the face hair free for much longer than shaving.
If I thought I was terrified of epilators before I started I would say my fear is worse now as I only use it on my legs mainly and occasionally my face. Other parts of the body are impossible to me due to curves and bumps (such as armpits) and sensitivity (bikini line). However this is just my thoughts and Braun state the epilator is safe to use on all parts of your body.
The epialtor failed to impress me in many ways so although these days its not as painful to use its still uncomfortable and compared to shaving with is not painful unless you cut yourself its no contest really, I will always go back to what I am used to.
The main issue for me is how it leaves my skin afterwards with the blotchiness and ingrown hairs. I cant imagine how annoying this is if you were getting ready for a night out and this was your prefered method of removing the hair because I would imagine you would look very poorly with all that bad skin. The best way I can advise for anyone wanting to do this is to epilate a good couple of hours before you get your legs out as the redness does subside but only after a few hours.
Personally I would feel really dissapointed if I paid this much money for this as these days it doesnt get much use maybe once every 4-6 weeks and I am so glad it was a freebie. It all depends on the person, as previously mentioned I can take pain very well having had 6 tattooes to date, numourous body piercings and giving birth to my daughter but epilating pain is a league of its own in my head.
However if you do want one of these they are available for around £80 on Amazon and you can also buy them in Boots (this way you get your points with the purchase).
If you are new to epilation, this will hurt. Imagine 40 pairs of rotating tweezers ripping your hair out from the root and that is what it feels like, because that is how epilators work. It will probably hurt the second time as well. The good news is, it's true what they say that you do get used to it and once your brain realises it is not an instrument of torture, the feeling is the not unpleasant sensation you get if you scratch your skin vigorously. It may take 3 or 4 goes to get to this stage, so persevere!
How does it compare to other methods of hair removal?
Well, it hurts more, it's noiser and it takes longer. However, I can feel the hair growing back the next day if I shave and epilating lasts for about 3 weeks. I get a horrible itchy rash from shaving as the hair is growing back, but the hairs are not as blunt when they grow back after epilating, so no rash. You do have to remember to exfoliate regularly after epilating to prevent in-growing hairs. This model does come with a pretty good electric shaver head as well, so you get the best of both worlds.
I've never had a professional wax, so I couldn't comment on that, but I have used several brands of waxing strips and sugaring kits. Epilation gives a very similar finish to waxing and sugaring as the hairs are removed from the root and the skin will remain smooth for a similar amount of time. Waxing is probably a bit quicker, but messier as it always leaves a sticky residue behind. I don't think sugaring and waxing catches as many of the shorter hairs and I always used to shave my legs as well after waxing or sugaring. I think you need to develop a bit of knack with waxing to get good result, whereas epilating is much more straight forward.
How does it compare to older/cheaper models?
I've have had the Braun Silk-epil wet and dry epilator for about 2 years now. Before that, I had an older model, also from Braun. It had a slower rotation speed, was not cordless and could not be used near water.
I would definitely recommend the cordless models over a corded one, as you can use it anywhere that is convenient to you. You aren't restricted to using it near a wall socket and I like to epilate over the bath, as it's easy to rinse away the hair afterwards. Being able to use it in the bath or shower is also a bonus as it doesn't hurt as much. However, I find that the tweezers get a better grip on dry hair, so I don't have to go over the same areas as many times. You do have to remember to charge it in advance though. I hour of charging gives about 35-40 minutes use. This is usually enough to do both legs and bikini line.
This model as a built-in light, this is an excellent function as you can easily see if you've missed any hairs as you go along.
The two speed rotation is a good addition and I would suggest starting on the slower speed until you get used to it. I rarely use the slower speed these days, as my main aim is to get it done as quickly as possible.
There are several interchangable caps for use on different areas. These slip on easily and securely - I've never had them fall off during use with this model as they used to with my previous epilator.
Due to the chunkiness of the head and the size of the caps, most of the hair remains inside the epilator, this makes it easier to dispose of rather than it flying all over the place.
What comes in the box...
Olay cooling wet wipes - 16 disposable wipes to clean and cool your skin before epilating.
Shaver head - electric shaver for when you're not feeling brave enough to epilate
Trimming cap - clips onto the shaver head to trim hair rather than shave it, but quickly gets clogged
Facial cap - blocks out about 3 quarters of the tweezers for more precision
Efficiency cap - pivoting head, for more control
Sensitive cap - with rounded ends for bikini area and underarms
Massaging roller cap - massage skin to mask the pain
Power lead - with 2-pin plug for bathroom power sockets
Cleaning brush - for decloging tweezers and rollers - good size and quality
Drawstring bag for storage - handy addition
I don't bother with most of the caps and just use the massaging roller attachment. I only use the epilator on my legs and bikini line and this one works quickly and efficiently for both. I haven't been brave enough to try it on my underarms yet.
Don't go straight for the bikini line or underarms, epilating these areas will hurt a lot more than the legs and may scare you off for life. Get used to epilating your legs a few times first.
Hold the skin as taut as possible as this will ensure the hairs are pulled out quickly rather than the skin being pulled along with hair, which only adds to the pain. This is particularly important if the hairs are on the longer side (more than 1 cm).
Use Aloe vera or tea tree lotion after epliating as it will help reduce the stinging sensation.
Make sure you skin is clean before epilating, preferably with something anti-bacterial as the exposed follicles can easily become infected. The wipes that come with this model are good for this, but are not essential.
Plan ahead and epilate 24 hrs before you intend getting your legs out in public. It can take several hours for the redness to calm down.
The head is easily detachable by pressing the release button. The caps are clipped on and removed by squeezin the sides. Both the head and the caps can be rinsed under the tap for de-clogged using the provided brush.
In summary, epilation is a great long-lasting method of hair removal with no ongoing costs. The Braun Silk-epil Xpressive Wet & Dry has numerous features that make the job quicker and less painful and mark it out from its competitors. The RRP is £139.99, but Amazon are currently selling it for £65.20. You could spend this on one session of waxing at a salon, so great value for money.
This epilator is the easiest on I have ever tried.
It removed the hairs with ease & least discomfort. I didn't feel "much" pain as far as epilators go. By that I mean, I expect some pain as removing hair from the roots by any means is a painful process. It removed the hairs very well, even short hairs.
One thing I really liked about this is the Smart light which shines a light on the area you are epilating/shaving & you can see what you are doing (I just wish it was a bit stronger). It claims to create an almost daylight condition.
As expected, my skin was a bit red & swollen but this soon went (this depends on your skin's sensitivy & areas used but this happened on my underarms & legs).
It has 4 different caps for the main epilator head:
-bikini & underarm
-High-Frequency Massage System (which massages) & is the least painful one (I'd say can used for large areas)
-Efficiency Pro cap for fast epilation & maximum contact with the skin.
It also comes with a main shaving head which is excellent for:
-trimming long hairs prior to epilation ( Opti Trim comb) to ideal length
-it can also be used as a shaver
-trimmer (for example for bikini area).
The epilation head claims to possess "Close-grip Technology for extra efficiency especially for short hairs" (I found this to be correct & it did remove short hairs quite well) & that the "40 tweezers always keep close contact to the skin to remove hairs as short as a grain of sand" (I found this sometimes worked, due to the tautness of the skin & the positioning of the hair; for example on my legs where the skin is straight & taut, this worked, but on face, this was more difficult to achieve).
Another plus point for this product is it can be used in the shower (on wet skin), even under running water! You may even use shower gel to make the skin moist & smooth. It can then be washed & cleaned under running water.
The product itself is white, has a nice shimmer on the bottom part & is easy to hold & handle.
Highly recommended!! (but remember to buy a plug adaptor!)
I bought this epilator well over a year ago. After having enough of having to shave daily I researched various methods.Although the idea of waxing did appeal to me,the thought of getting sticky and having to rid myself of that stickyness (I used to wax previously) just sounded like too much of a task.
I muss confess that prior to this epilator, many years earlier I had been a proud owner of one of the earlier makes..(the oval shaped, short stubby ones).I wasn't courageous enough to try it again. The reason I say "again" is due to an accident I had had with my armpit getting caught in this previous one's tweezers, and subsequently me suffering from some rather
horrific bruising there,I had almost gained a phobia of it.
"Never again" I thought, although I would occasionally show this new gadget on the market to friends and warn them of its dangers.
I love to get my hands on new gadgets and when this was advertised I just couldn't help myself.I wanted it so badly and seen as I had a few pounds I thought I would treat myself.
Although this is now priced lower,at the time I purchased this epilator it was around £97.00. The thing that really appealed to me was being able to use it in the shower.I did wonder if this was even possible considering it used electricity to charge and was slightely concerned I may end up electrocuted!
How wrong was I.I've often found items advertised/reviewed by magazines or newspapers are never quite as great as they're suggested to be.But this is one of those gadgets that does exactly as it says.
The epilator has 40 tweezers which grab even the shortest hair-when I say short I mean hair that I don't know is there, but shows up in the head!
I first used this in the shower, and I would recommend that to anyone who is new to epilating. It really does help. One thing to keep in mind is that unlike waxing this takes hair off slower(as it is rolled gradually over the hair) and thus the pain is somewhat more. However this is mostly noticeable when using it dry and not when in the shower or bath.Although at first I only epilated my legs,I gradually introduced my arms and underarms too. When the epilator is switched on a li9ght comes on in the centre of the epilator which is ideal for picking up hair you would otherwise miss.
This epilator keeps me hair free for just over three weeks.
The product comes with a facial attachment which can be used on the top lip but I've yet to try this.
My only problem with this product is that the battery runs out in about 35/40 mins (when fully charged)Often I'm all done by then, but sometimes I'll need to leave it to charge again and finish the process.
Overall a good product which really does remove pretty much all hair above skins surface, but the battery life does let it down a bit.
This truely is a leader in the market! Epilators have come a long way and the Braun silk-epli 7 is proof of that.
If you are holding back because you are afraid of the pain factor, you have nothing to worry about. A slight alien sensation is what I felt the first time it touched my skin but within a few seconds I was comfortablely epilating away.
The Epilator comes with a pack of Olay Pre-Epilation wipes that help prepare your skin for a cooler, soothing effect, adding to the luxury factor. However I've tried epilating without using the wipes too, dreading the worst but all was well.
The epilator can pick up 'really tiny' hair can be used in the shower and has an attatchment for the face too...what more could a girl ask for?
Product Claims and my Feedback:
1. High frequency massage: The high frequency massage system stimulates the skin and effectively soothes the plucking sensation during epilation to maximise your skin comfort.
What I Say:
Yes the massage feature really helps soothe the skin, I felt zero pain!
2. Pivoting head: The Silk-épil 7 Dual Epilator features a flexible head that can pivot by up to 15 degrees forward and back. This means it can better adapt to the contours of the body for more comfort and maximum thoroughness. And it ensures that optimum usage position is maintained.
What I Say:
True, I did manage to get into all the nooks and crannies, under arms, back of knees around the ankles, just to mention a few...
3. SoftLift Tips: The SoftLift Tips effectively lift even flat-lying hair and help guide them to the tweezers for removal.
What I Say:
Well it did mangage to get all the hairs, cant really say whether any of them were lying flat, but i'm guessing some of those must have been too lazy to stand up and needed assitance to the tweezers for the shock of their life!
4. Smartlight: The Smartlight helps easily guide your way through the epilation process and lightens up even the finest hairs for no miss removal.
What I Say:
Love the light, if you dont mind the buzzing tweezer sound (comes on as soon as you put the epilator on), you could probably use it as a torch.
5. Speed personalisation: You can select the right speed for your individual needs: Speed one for extra gentle epilation, speed two for extra efficient epilation.
What I Say:
I like acting hard, so always go for speed two, (well on the legs anyway). Speed one is great for the face!
6. The Silk-épil 7 Dual was designed specifically for epilation in warm water. Warm water is relaxing and soothing. The warmth improves your circulation and increase the comfort of your experience while making your skin less sensitive.
What I Say:
I haven't tried it in the shower yet, but looking forward to it anyway...wink...wink!
7. Close-grip technology
Braun's technological breakthrough makes epilating more efficient than ever before. The 40 tweezers have been engineered to close at the optimal angle and grip hair even closer to the skin for better removal of even the shortest hairs (0.5 mm).
What I Say:
Didn't really measure the hair, but yeah, I did have pretty tiny hair and most of them did get zapped!
Cordless use--fast recharge
The Silk-épil 7 Dual Epilator gives you the freedom to epilate wherever and whenever desired. Get up to 40 minutes of operation after just one hour of charging.
What I Say:
What they don't tell you is that the charger has a two pin plug, so you will need one of those universal adaptors or a shave plug thing, you can buy one for less then a pound, but its a little dissappointing when you want to start playing straight away with your shiny new toy and always cant. However it does be a little charged up when it arrives, so i'm guessing you can have a fiddle, but cant fully go to town!
Waterproof and washable
All Silk-épil 7 Dual Epilator models have a sealed body, which means they can be both used and cleaned under running water for better hygiene.
What I Say:
Since I haven't used it in wet conditions yet, I haven't really washed itunder the tap either. I does come with a little brush so I have used that to clean it with instead.
Five attachments included
The Silk-épil 7 7681 also comes with five attachments including a shaver head, a trimmer cap, an efficiency cap, a sensitive area cap and a facial cap, specifically designed to give you superior results in different areas of the body.
What I Say:
can't go wrong. I only wish I had this gadget a month earlier becase I actually purchased a shaving kit back then from superdrugs.
Having said all this and having super smooth and silky legs to prove it, I don't know if I can say the same for the face attatchment. I feel that this part of the gadget is still a little under developed and needs further research and improvement. I didn't seem to pick up the tiny hair dotted around my upperlip (Can't believe i'm actally sharing this!) and did leave that area a little red from repeated and frustrated attempts.
I haven't tried it on my face again after this, but am hoping to give it another go some time soon. Hence the four stars (one missing).
So overall a nifty little gadget to own for use around the body and looks good on the bathroom shelf too!
The dreaded Epilator.... Girls I won't lie to you regardless of what the adverts say and how effortless the girls make it look, when you initially start to Use an Epilator it is extremely painful. You do however get used to the pain and so therefore feel it less. The Braun silk epil 7681 is small in size but has 3 different speed settings allowing you to start slowly and as you get more used to it you can speed it up. The battery charge lasts a long time, I used to be able to use it for an half hour and only had to charge after every 8 or 9 times. Having to re use once every couple of weeks. The Epilator comes with a little accessory pack to clean and maintain. For the 20mins after using the Epilator you get lots of little bumps, understandable, so if it's a quick fix before a night out I wouldn't recommend it.
Wow!! was my first reaction when I first used this baby, as soon as it arrived I unpacked and got cracking!
I used it on my legs first, long winter hairy legs were soon converted into beach worthy sexy smooth legs! It contains various heads and caps for different body parts:
An Efficiency Pro cap for large areas like legs and arms, an underarm cap; slightly smaller than the previous one, not totally essential i must say, a shaver head, i recommend using this before epilating for the first time, epilating long hairs = mega Ouch!, one trimmer cap, bikini line anyone? and one facial cap, perfectly small for the upper lip and in between the eyebrows but NOT for shaping eyebrows or you won't be left with any!
It also has a smart light so you don't have to sit on the windowsill while shaving, it picks up even the sand grain small hairs. I find that my hair grows back after about a week or two if I'm lucky, this for me is great, my hair grows incredibly fast if I use a razor in morning, by the evening my legs will already be prickly!
It takes one hour to charge which gives you a 40 minute use, it's cordless which is a plus although you can't use it while it's charging.
Some other cons are the fact that it's noisy and I feel that although it's great that you can shave in the shower or bath i don't find it as effective in water perhaps because the hair is harder to grip to.
Anyway, overall a great product at a reasonable price! I'll be using it for many more years to come.
After years of shaving my legs and underarms, I decided it was about time a 'bit the bullet' and bought an epilator as I have heard so much about them.
The main advantage of an epilator is that it leaves your legs really smooth for up to 3 weeks and avoids the stubble that shaving can leave after a few days.
As I could give anyone a run for their money for hairy legs, I was somewhat dubious as I have heard that epilators can be very painful and they rip the hairs out with sets of tweezers which wizz around at an alarming rate!
Pain is not the word for what I felt when I first started but I was surprised to find that I either got used to the pain after a few minutes and subsequent uses of the epilator have not been so painful, so it is worth sticking with it for a few sessions until you get used to it. I also found that using the epilator after a hot bath when the pores are open, also tends to diminish the pain.

The result? Smooth, soft and seriously beautiful skin--for up to four weeks--giving you the confidence that you look and feel your best whenever, wherever you want to.
Additionally, the comfort setting switch allows users to control the speed of the epilation to fit to their needs, with both "soft" and "fast" settings.
The new pivoting heads--with a variance of ±15º--adapt to the body's contours, allowing closer contact with the skin and aiding removal of even the shortest hairs.
Independent dermatological research measured the effects among women of wet compared to dry epilation, with findings which showed that the women significantly favoured wet epilation.
Nearly two thirds (63%) also found wet epilation was kinder to the skin, making it suitable for those with sensitive skin or those new to epilating.
The Braun Silk-épil Xpressive Pro Wet & Dry is also rechargeable and cordless, with a one-way charge system to keep it completely safe in water.
Please note that due to safety reasons, the new Xpressive cannot be used with the cord plugged in.

The Xpressive loses very little of its charge over time, and so is ideal for taking on holiday in the supplied storage pouch.
MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Overall, I was very impressed with the close finish this epilator gave. I have to have several attempts to get the best results and I would say that the best way to use the epilator is with circular movements around the target area for the best results.
The eplilator comes with a wonderful smartlight which shines on the target area to give you a clearer idea of what you are doing.
For the main epilator head, you have several different caps that you can use - bikini and underarm, face (not used as yet as it sounds far too painful), high frequency massage system (ideal for larger areas) and Efficiency Pro cap for faster and maximum epilation (I must tell you that this is also the most painful by far so I have only used it once and have steered clear ever since until I am braver!).
This epilator is fantastic to use in warm water as this opens the pores and makes it far less painful. It is also brilliant in running water and I have found using it in the shower totally ideal.
I know this probably isn't a major point in most people's minds, but this epilator is a lovely shape and it seems to fit into your hand perfectly. It is lovely to look at and very light to hold and does not feel awkward in the least.
There are a few minor problems that I have with the epilator but they wouldn't detract me from buying one. Firstly, you cannot use the epilator whilst it is charging which I find a bit of an annoyance. Secondly, it comes with a two point adaptor, so if you are thinking of buying this epilator then pop out and buy a shaver adaptor (only a few pounds) or you will be annoyed when you receive it and you are not able to use it straight away.
At a cost of around £80.00 this epilator is quite expensive but it does the job very well and I would recommend it.
I used to wax my legs, bikini line and underarms but found it expensive and time-consuming to constantly be going to get it done, and couldn't seem to be able to wax at home very efficiently at all! So after some research I decided to buy an epilator. Although quite expensive, it seemed like a bit of an investment and you can find them on offer online, and I eventually went for this one as Braun was a respectable make, plus it claimed it could remove hairs the size of a grain of sand, or something like that. Although I'm not sure that that's entirely true, it is a really great epilator and I'm so pleased that I bought it. I use it all the time and once you get used to the initial pain it's really not that bad at all! I have to say that if you get lazy and leave a bit of re-growth it is very painful, so best to epilate with just a bit of stubble. I would definitely suggest using the wet/dry feature (amazing! who comes up with technology like this?!) as it hurts a lot less if you're in the bath!! I love that it has a light as well, it really is ingenious! Thumbs up Braun!
I have been using epilators for several years, this is my second one. I chose it because my last one was Braun and I definitely trust and like the brand. This one claims to remove tiny hairs, as small as a grain of sand is the promise, which is great as you don't have to let your legs get really hairy before you can use it.
It comes with several different attachments for using on different areas or smaller trickier parts, which is a good idea, but to be honest I never really use them; I just use the main one. However, I only use this on my legs, maybe if you were using elsewhere smaller or different attachments may be useful.
I find it is effective and quick and does remove the majority of hairs. However, its claim to remove grains of sand is optimistic, tiny stubble does not get removed. Your legs are not as smooth as shaving but for me it definitely lasts a lot longer. If i'm not seeking totally smooth legs, I can get away with doing it every couple of weeks quite happily, but my hair is relatively fair. Probably on darker or thicker hair this would not be so effective.
Overall I am pleased with it. I don't have to wait for my legs to be really hairy, which is essential for me, and it lasts a couple of weeks without any hairs being visible. This is good enough for me, but it is not as good as Braun claim.
I have been reading reviews for some time researching the best epilator i could use especially for a first time user. I eventually chose this epilator due to it claiming to be able to remove "hairs as short as a grain of sand" in english, hair that is as small as 0.5mm.
Whats in the box
This epilator comes with several different attachments that just clip on to the main body of the epilator.
*shaver head which you can use to shave normally or set to trim and it trims your hairs to the recommended length for the epilator to work more efficiently when used with optitrim attachment on top.
*high frequency massage head which has mini rollers to supposedly help guide the hairs and to also make the process more gentle on your skin.
*efficiency pro cap which ensures maximum skin contact for faster epilation
*pack of 16 Olay pre-epilation wipes
I found out as soon as i turned this on that it was very noisy! i was very shocked by how loud this was but because it is my first epilator i cannot compare this to others so maybe all epilators are this loud. I started off using the massage head attachment as it is more gentle and prepared my self for pain! But it never came it was tingling and i did manage to epilate both my legs. I thought it was a very labourious task although it worked it didnt really do hair as short as promised and i had to pluck out remaining small hairs with my own tweezers. i have tried all attachments apart from the shave and trim and the only difference i found was it was definitely more gently with the massage cap on.
ive been wanting a permanant way of removing body hair for ages, and had only used razors and waxing products before. this epilator caught my eye after seeing it on a tv advert, so i did some research and heard nothing but good reviews. i couldnt wait to go out and buy it and be hairfree, for a couple of weeks anyway. there was an offer on in boots so i purchased it with a third off which made me even more happy. on bringing the epilator home, i quickly charged it for the requred time and got in the shower ready to use.
i can honestly say i was very dissapointed with this product. the pain was unbearable for me. i managed to do one of my underarms in the space of about half an hour as it was so painful. this was whilst in the shower. i couldnt face doing the other underarm, id had enough! maybe it was just me being a wimp but in my experience it was awful. it really does feel exactly like getting your hairs ripped out of your skin, obviously because thats what is happening! i just thought it would be diffrent somehow. it was very uncomfortable to say the least.
when using it wet, it doesnt seem to grip as well to catch all the hairs so you have to keep going over the same area. also, the claim that it gets hairs as small as a grain of sand i found to be false. after doing my legs, they didnt feel smooth at all. another downside is the very loud noise it makes!
the epilator is very pricey and seeing as i was so dissapointed, i decided to return it the next day and get my money back. :(
i can say one or two positive things though, i mean the areas i managed to do didnt grow back for weeks! i just wish i had a higher pain threshold. x
Bought this as my legs come up in a rash if i save and do not really have the time to book in waxing appointments, due to working long hours and attanding college on a weekly basis.
At first i was shocked at the price of this product, around £85. However thinking about it the amount i used to spend on razors and products alike this will turn out to be the cheap alternative.
It comes with lots of different heads to me most are the same the only difference being the amount of hair you rip out at a time. although i do find the one with the massagey but on it the best to use. There is also a trimmer/shaver head which is good.
For my first time using it i have to say i used some dutch courage (a glass of wine and a jager bomb). I'm not going to lie it hurt like hell and i instantly wanted to give.
however i perservered and managed to get through bout bottom half of my legs after a while it is still a bit painful but i would describe it more like the dull pain like the scratchiness of a tattoo for those who have one to compare to, otherwise its more just like an irritating scratchy feeling but nothing unbearable and does get less noticeable over time, and bikini line was not as bad as i thought it was going to be, however, i have not plugged up the courage to do my underarm area, do not ask me why but i think that is goign to eb the worst.
Also this does have the added bonus of being able to use in water which i find a massive plus, and makes washing easier. It also doesnt need to be plugged in although the drawback is you can not actually use it when it is plugged in.
Definitely worth the buy.
This is my secong epilator. My old model was also a Braun, as they are the leading brand on the market and I was very pleased with it. However, after a good few years, I decided to go for an upgrade and got Braun's latest model (to date), the Silk-Epil Xpressive Pro 7681.
First of all, I know that one of the selling points of the product is the fact that it can be used under water, but I am unable to comment on this particular aspect as I only use it dry. However, being waterproof means that you can wash each individual part after use, making it much more hygienic than other models.
It comes with a variety of accessories, mostly attachments designed to epilate more efficiently different parts of the body, but to be honest I don't use any of them as the only difference among them is their size: smaller means less hairs gets gripped at once, so it is less painful, but it also means it takes much longer, so I just go for the larger attachment that'll get the job done quicker. It also has a shaver head for the areas that you don't want to epilate, and a trimmer cap can be attached onto the shaver head.
Whereas my old model had to be plugged in, the 7681 needs to be charged prior to use, and cannot be used at all while it is plugged in. This is for safety reasons, as you can use it underwater and, well, you want to avoid accidents. It also means that you can easily take it with you on holiday and you won't need to bother with a plug, cord, adapter, etc, as long as you remember to charge it up before you go. However one thing you will NEED - and which is NOT sold with the epilator - is a shaver adaptor, as it comes with a two-prong plug which will not work on standard sockets.
It takes between one and two hours to fully charge the 7681, and you can tell it is ready by looking at the green light that shows at the front: if it flashes green, it is still charging, and when it stops flashing, it's ready. One full charge lasts about 45 minutes, when a red light will start flashing to let you know that you've only got a few minutes left. 45 minutes is enough for me to epilate my underarms and two half legs, and to trim and shave my bikini area.
The way it works, as you probably know, is by pulling hairs out exactly the way tweezers do, except this time there are 40 tweezers doing it at the same time. So yes, it is NOT completely pain free, but it varies enormously depending on which part of your body you are epilating. From most pain-free to most painful, it goes like this: legs>underams>bikini. Keeping your skin stretched helps with the pain, but what I found the most helpful was simply perseverance: each time you use it, you hairs grow back weaker and thinner, so each session is a little less painful than the previous. I can honestly say after a while, I could actually not feel anything at all while epilating my legs and my underarms, so do keep trying, it's worth it. Just a word of advice from personal experience: going back to shaving more than twice in a row will mean that the pain will go back to its original level when you next epilate!
There is just one thing I am not really happy with: you are promised up to 4 weeks of hairlessness, but, well, I have to epilate every single week. Maybe everybody has a different hairgrowth rate, but over all the years I have an epilator (including my older model), I have always had to do my legs/underams every week. Like I said above, it takes me about 45 minutes to do everything (but then I do like to be thorough), so if you don't have the time to dedicate yourself to this ongoing process, maybe shaving is better for you.
This new epilator comes with Close Grip Technology to lift loosen and gently remove hairs as small as a grain of sand (0.5mm) / SoftLift Tips can remove even the shortest and flattest of hairs while the 40 winglet tweezers remove more hair in a single stroke than any other epilator / Plus you can use it in water / for the gentlest ever epilation. Enjoy smooth soft and seriously beautiful skin for up to four weeks / giving you confidence that you look and feel your best whenever wherever you want to.
