I have since I was a teenager always shaved my legs and underarms, never really daring to wax until my mid-twenties, and even then always forgetting, so after my mother in law explained how she was getting on with an epilator I decided to give one a try as I needed an alternative to shaving in the shower every other day which was time consuming and a faff. I can't say I relished the idea, it did sound painful from what she explained, but the benefits of having smooth skin for longer than a day or two outweighed the cons of pain! The thing that girls do for beauty!

      Hair removal:
The beauty of the Silk Epil by Braun is that it removes hair right at the roots - even the fine hair (as short as 0.5mm long - which is pretty short!). When I read the blurb about the Silk Epil, I didn't actually think this would be possible, but in genuinely does get rid of even tiny bits of hair. It works using 40 tweezers to remove the hair, so it's not 'pleasant', but it's also not as painful as I expected it to be. The pivoting head means that hair removal is easier in those harder to reach areas, as the flexible head means it pivots with your contours, which makes it more thorough and less prone to miss hairs. There is also a feature call SoftLift Tips which lift even flat lying hair, guiding them to the tweezers to ensure total removal of all hair, working alongside the rollers to massage and sooth the skin as you use. I do find that one use isn't enough and you do have to go over areas a few times before every last hair has been removed, but from speaking to friends who use different models, I think this is pretty standard with epilators as a rule. I find I need to remove hair again after around 4 weeks.

      Cordless:
The cordless body means it can be used wherever suits you best, in the bathroom, in your bedroom, in the shower, the bath... I think this makes it versatile and definitely more user friendly. It charges fully within around 50 minutes to an hour, and you will easily have enough time for one full epilation with the 40 minute battery time after charge.

      Wet wipes:
The wet wipes that are recommended for use to prepare the skin before epilation are made by Olay and are a god send. I often ignore when products recommend you to use another product alongside it, as I think it's just another way to make more money out of you, but I would have to agree in this instance. They cool and relax the skin before the trauma of epilating, kind of lulling it into a false sense of security! On one occasion, I can't remember why but I didn't use the wipes beforehand and the difference in my skin was unbelievable. It felt sore and looked red in areas, it hurt more during epilating too, so these wonder wipes are a must! I sometimes use them after epilating too although I try and not go through too many, they don't seem to last very long as it is! One pack of wipes come in the box and extra packs can be bought for around £7 on Amazon (for a pack of 16), but I think you can pick them up cheaper on eBay.

      Personalise it:
The feature that I like best is the option to change the speed setting. There are only 2 settings - wimp and hard! Setting 1 is for 'gentle epilation' and setting 2 is for 'efficient epilation'. Guess which one I use! I think I have used setting 2 once when I was pushed for time and boy did I feel like I could take on the world! You definitely need your hard pills for this one (of course I may just be being the ultimate wimp!).

      Easy grip and Smartlight:
The epilator is easy to hold and it won't get slippy if you use it in the shower or the bath. They are really easy to clean too, and can be put under running water without any worries at all. It is really light at just over 1lb. There is also a smartlight which lights up really hard to see fine hairs, so this makes the process a little easier too.

How would I recommend using it?
I would recommend that you use this epilator in a warm, not hot, bath (the epilator is 100% safe to use in water). I find that if you rub your skin with the cooling wipes before getting into a warm bath, sit in the bath for 5 minutes to relax the skin, and then begin the process on the first setting, that this is the most effective process that won't make your skin sore. The pulling sensation also reduces if used in warm water, something I definitely noticed in comparison to when I used it dry. I have used it in a rush without the wipes, and using it dry on a setting 2 just made my skin really sore to the touch for a short while and wasn't worth doing it this way. Of course everyone is different, but I am just sharing my experiences. I also found that after 2 or 3 uses, the discomfort significantly reduced and now I find it seems much more gentle and easier to use, but I think this is more my skin getting used to the treatment, so do stick with it! My hair also seems to grow back slower between each use now than it did when I first started using it. If you are going to continue to epilate, I would also recommend using a light, fragrance free shower gel - I find Sanex or the Simple range are perfect.

The RRP of this model is £109.99 but I didn't pay that! I managed to pick it up on offer in a chemist for £75, and it is currently on sale on Amazon for £84.84. Do keep an eye out, I occasionally see it on offer one week and then full price somewhere else. You can pick up epilators for between £50 and £150, so this particular one is mid-range.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A great epilator which makes hair removal long lasting and somewhat painless!

I absolutely love this epilator and am slightly obsessed with it!!

Before purchasing this epilator I had never used one before because I was too scared that it would be incredibly painful! But after thinking about it for a while I decided that it would be worth putting up with if it meant having smoother legs for longer! I've never really been a fan of waxing, finding it too time consuming and costly, so I thought that epilating might be a good alternative, since it is something I can do and home and can start and stop without causing lots of mess.

When I first turned on the epilator it shocked me slightly as it was so noisy and looked really menacing with the epilator head spinning round! Deciding to bite the bullet I placed the epilator against my leg and began to move it upwards. I can honestly say I didn't find it painful, and I don't think I have a particularly high pain threshold. It wasn't the most comfortable experience but it wasn't one which I would describe as painful. I think the level of pain experienced when epilating correlates to the length of hair, I caught some longer hairs on my leg and it was quite painful. So it is best to use it when the hair is at the shortest length to be caught in the tweezers. I also think the fact that the epilator has 40 tweezers helps as more hairs are caught at once meaning that any painful sensation isn't more prolonged than it has to be!

After finding using the epilator of my legs to be relatively pain free I decided to try my arm pits. The first attempt did not go well, and was fairly painful. I hadn't stretched the skin properly and the epilator just ended up trying to pinch my skin!! Attempt two was somewhat more successful, I made sure that the hairs were very short and that the skin was taunt by resting my hand on the back of my shoulder. I then placed the epilator where the hair was and moved it over the area, it was more painful than my legs but it was very bearable, it was just a more unpleasant feeling and felt a bit hot and tender for a while afterwards. After epilating this area it lasted for ages, I did it before I went on holiday and didn't need to do it again for about a week after I'd returned. Epilating this area is definitely beneficial in the summer; it takes slightly longer than shaving but lasts so much longer! I also felt like it was a more complete job in this area because it was smaller and easier not to miss anything!

Returning to the epilator itself, it comes in a small silver case which fits the epilator, the attachment heads and the plug into it easily. The epilator is mainly white with a pale green insert around the sides and bottom. The white has a subtle glittery iridescent effect and over all the epilator has a clean look. The epilator is also equipped with a light which is on constantly while the epilator is in use, this is helpful for highlighting finer hairs which you may have missed when epilating. The epilator is controlled by a dial and comes with two speeds; I normally use the second higher speed as there seems no point using the first. The epilator also came with three attachment caps to fit over the epilator heads; an efficiency cap; beginners cap; and normal cap. The normal and beginners cap are fitted with a 'massage system' which looks to me light mini plastic spikes on rings separated by rings with nothing on them. I haven't found the massaging system to be very helpful in reducing any painful sensations created by using the epilator and I found it more annoying and scratchy than helpful, so I generally use the efficiency cap which has none of the massaging rings on it and exposes the biggest area of the epilator for use. Another thing that I really like about this epilator is the fact that it is all washable and thus hygienic. The epilator also comes with a little brush to clean the epilating head. It is easy to take the epilating head off to clean it under a running tap; there is a green button on the back of the epilator which when pushed in releases the epilating head.
This epilator comes with a two pronged shaver plug for use in bathrooms, so I had to purchase an adapter to use it from normal mains; this was relatively inexpensive so it didn't bother me too much.

After getting this epilator I was raving about it to lots of my friends and as a result of this and letting them use it to show how little it hurts three of my friends went on to purchase epilators! And although some of my friends did think it was quite painful, and I didn't, they were impressed with the effect enough to get one!

If you're thinking about getting this epilator I would definitely recommend it!!
