      A Buzzing Revolution

My mum had been using the Braun Oral B Professional Care 8500 for a few months and her teeth kept catching my eye - they looked so clean and as if she had just visited the dentist when they have been polished and look really pristine. I had been thinking about buying an electric brush as every time I visited the dentist I needed to have a build up of plaque/tartar removed from the bottom teeth at the back - I have a particular saliva type that causes a quicker plaque build up apparently? I don't know what it is that I do or don't do when I brush with a manual brush but obviously it isn't a very good technique and I also found that no matter who many brushes I tried I could never contort the brush or myself or my mouth enough to reach every individual nook and cranny in my mouth - the brush head always seems too big to get around the back of the teeth and brush effectively or around the back of my wisdom teeth? Is it just me? I don't know but I do know something - I do not have that problem now! Since buying this electric brush I have had a much easier time brushing my teeth, the head is so small and compact and the stem is long and thin - this enables me to really get into all areas of my mouth and now my teeth look and feel like I have been to the dentist for a polish every day! Which is great because I get the look without the anxiety of visiting the dreaded dentist with his chair and picks and drills and tools - ugh, not my favourite experience of all time.

In fact the next to last time I visited my dentist I had only been using the electric brush for approximately two weeks and he noticed a difference. Obviously there was plaque/tartar to remove that had already develped but 6 months later on my last visit I could not believe it and neither could the dentist - no plaque/tartar build up at all! Now that is very impressive and to me is proof that this is a top brush that performs incredibly well! I would never go back to manual now. When the electric brush needs to be charged I do have to use the manual and even though I brush for ages and with sufficient pressure there is a noticable difference to my teeth, they just don't look as clean as when they have been done with the 8500 and they don't look as bright? This just proves to me how good the Braun is.

The Braun 8500 lasts a good 4 to five days and nights before needing charging, I wait until the charge is completely drained and then recharge - I don't know if that is the best and most efficient way to use it or not but it is not a problem to me and it certainly would not put me of buying another as I love my teeth and the fact that I get zero plaque/tartar build up! This brush is great!

The unit takes approx 10-12 hours to charge, which initially I thought was a long time but it works out fine as I just use my manual brush for a morning and it is more than worth the wait. The brush comes with a charger and some brush head replacements, one of which is for sensitive teeth! I thought I had sensitive teeth but find that I can use the normal brush heads without any sensitivity so I am not sure now? There is a storage container for the spare brush heads that is part of the charger unit and this keeps things nice and clean and tidy.

I clean my mouth in quarters and the brush times each session for you so that you know when to move on to the next area - this makes brushing so easy, you don't even have to think about it. I soon got used to the pulsating and swirling sensation and find that I can access the back teeth so much better as the brush head is much smaller, I can fit it right at the back of the back teeth, I only have a very small space at the back of my wisdom teeth and this brush can fit around them easily! My teeth are noticeably brighter, shades whiter (not white but getting a better shade) and just look and feel so clean.

There are two brushing options which are normal and sensitive.
      The brush pulsates and oscillates.
There is a pressure sensor to protect gums from damage.
A two minute time, broken up into four 30 seconds.

I can highly recommend this brush to others and at the time of updating the review (November 2010) Braun Brushes are half price - a great time to buy! and join the Buzzing revolution!

All in all a fantastic tooth brush!

        Disadvantages

Good quality product if you can get it at a competitive price.

The Oral B professional care 8500 rechargeable toothbrush is great because it has two easy to use brushing modes, a clean mode and a sensitive mode to promote healthy teeth and gums in all areas of the mouth.

The brush itself contains a Ni-MH rechargeable battery which needs charging for at least 16 hours before the first use (mine took 24 hours to charge fully), and once charged lasts for up to two weeks of brushing twice a day which is really good. It also has a charge indicator so you know when the power is beginning to run low.

There are two brushing modes: Clean mode requires one press of the button and is supposed to remove twice as much plaque than a manual toothbrush and Sensitive mode requires two presses of the button and operates at a reduced speed for sensitive areas. The brush heads pulsate at 40 000 times a minute to gently remove plaque and there are 8 800 side-to-side movements per minute to sweep plaque away. My previous toothbrush had been from the Sonicare range and I must admit, this Oral B brush seems to do a better job as my teeth feel much cleaner.

The brush features a pressure sensor control which stops the brush pulsating if too much pressure is applied and the professional timer makes a short stuttering sound at 30 second intervals within 2 minutes to remind you to brush the four quadrants of your mouth equally. I felt that compared to my old Sonicare brush this one was quite noisy.

Included in the box are two precision clean brush heads and a sensitive brush head along with two different coloured O rings for identification purposes.
The top of the charger unit pops up quite neatly to reveal storage space for four brush heads and it can be mounted on a wall using the kit supplied which includes the back plate two screws and two wall plugs.
In addition to this you get a hard plastic travel case in which there is space for the brush and two heads.

I think this product does achieve noticeable results and it is great that a couple of brush heads are included as these are quite expensive to buy. I got mine half price at £34.99 and at this price it represents good value for money.

Two minute timer with 30 second pulses.

This electric toothbrush is very professional and easy to use. It is approved by dentists and leaves your teeth feeling clean. It also naturally whitens your teeth.

It uses oscillating and pulsating to give you a good clean and feels soft on your gums.

It comes with rather a large bulky charging box that has 4 compartments in it for storage of extra brushes. This can be placed on the wall near the charging socket to keep it out the way.

The Toothbrush takes around 16 hours to charge up and when charging has a flashing blue light to tell you that charging is taking place. However the only way of knowing when it needs charging is when it slows down and stops, you just hope it runs out after the two minute clean.

The handle is very easy to hold and grip and confortable to use.
When using the toothbrush it does a single pulse every 30 seconds telling you when to change sides or move top to bottom or vice verse and after two minutes pulses four times telling you that you have done a full two minute clean. The is also a speed control enabling you to reduce the speed by keeping you finger on the on/off button. When you switch it back on it goes to the factory set speed.

          Accessories

          1) It comes with a flexisoft brush head which is recommended for every day use. The replacement heads also come with little plastic rings which you can place at the bottom of the head enabling more than one person to use the toothbrush. The bristles change colour with use telling you when you are ready for a replacement head. The heads tend to last aroung 10 weeks of everyday use. You use about a pea sized blob of toothpaste.

          2) A probright brushhead which is designed for polishing and naturally whiten you teeth. It is a head with a small plastic/rubber ring type shape in the middle with a ring of bristles round the outside and an extra row at the top and bottom. Just put your pea sized blob of toothpaste on as normal. My dentist told me to use it every 10 days or so.

          3) A tongue freshener which you put a drop of mouthwash on and drag it from back to front on your tongue. It looks like a triangle with rubber nobbles on the top of it.

          4) An interdental cleaner that cleans between your teeth. It acts a bit ilke a tooth pick. You get five replacements picks with it and these can be used about three times.

All replacement heads are available on the Oral b Website.(www.oralbdirect.co.uk)

The Toothbrush is currently £69.99 from the Oral B website or £89.99 from Boots which is how much I paid about 1 year ago
Toothbrush heads £12.00 for 4 heads
Probright brush heads £9.99 for 2
          Not sure about Tongue cleaner
          Replacement picks £2.49 for 25

Cleaning of the toothbrush is easy just rinse it under the tap and give the charging storage box a clean with a cloth.

The toothbrush is suitable for use on all the family. Infact we used to have a right fight with my two year old in the morning and at bed time to clean her teeth with a manual toothbrush. Then we started using this and we now dont have a problem at all. I think it must feel softer than a manual toothbrush and does not hurt as much on her tender gums when she has teeth coming through. Just use less toothpaste than you would with a manual toothbrush.

All in all I would recommend this toothbrush for all the family. You only need the one toothbrush just get extra replacement heads.
