      Basic hard disk recorder

This DVD recorder comes from the well know reliable source of Samsung Electronics, and cost me £150.
It's a basic looking thin, gloss black machine and looks like any dvd player, nothing fancy here appearance wise.

It does however have a hard disc drive built in and also a free view digital tuner. The hard disc space is a reasonable 160 gigabyte, not the largest as there are 500G machines available, but it is a nice and easy way of storing films and programs at the touch of a button. Then if you wish you can burn them on to a recordable DVD to keep, or just to free up some space on your recorder. There is a HDMI output on this witch means you can easily connect this to any HD TV. The free view tuner is great, all I had to do was conect my arial and press tune and it did all the work for me. It tuned in all of the free view channels available in my area. It's not all that simple though. My other family members say that it's a bit confusing if you are not very technically minded. They find it particular hard to set a program to record and to make sure it doesn't cut off before the end of their show. The menus can be a bit confusing and there are a lot of them so that might put you off.

The free view can get a bit choppy if the weather is bad or your signal is low. And also there is a a warning that if there is a hard disc failure all recordings could be lost. So they recommend that you record wanted material onto other formats. That worries me as what's the point of having a hard disc recorder if it's going to be so temperamental.
The DVD works well and supports 5.1 surround sound if you wish to connect this to a sound system.
The remote is pretty standard and comes in the same finish as the recorder itself.

This isn't the most expensive of machines and in my opinion it shows.

This item should have been taken off the market, its very user unfriendly, slow and generally overly complicated! Nearly every review I have read (Amazon, Comet have plenty!), say the same thing...rubbish! Do not buy as you can get a more user friendly HDD recorders for around the same price.

        Disadvantages

Good product, has some flaws though.

Got this model and it works pretty well in terms of playing DVD's an recording them, but I think the main problem here is the fact that it seems like any type of removable storage to burn doesn't seem to work the greatest. I've tried using flash drives many times on this machine but for some reason it never seems to work. Maybe it's me with the types of files that I put on there, but still, you would think that any type of media would be playable no matter what type of file it is.

Either way though, I think that this is a great device for anyone's home mainly because burning DVD's is much better than relying on old VCR's, but at the same time, this device does have its frustration and might take a bit of trial and error, especially when it comes to removable storage like flash drives and stuff like that.

        Disadvantages

        A total waste of money.

This machine is supposed to do all sort of things.
I bought it to replace an LG unit that has been damaged, and with which I had no problems.
The USB port will not accept my new Iomega media centre . It will not recognize a Verbatim hard drive. It will not recognize a Sandisk cruzer memory stick or an Easy-Disk stick or a Canyon stick.
There is a delay in TV mode when changing channels.
I took it back to the store and they gave me another one.
It is exactly the same as the first one.
I phoned the Samsung Help Centre (God Help Us) and the genius there told me to download the "Firmware" for the unit on to a memory stick and install it to the machine.
"Gues what" The stupid machine wont read the memory stick or any of the other three that I tried.
I will be bringing it back and asking for a refund.
I WONDER WHAT THE letters SH in the model name are an abbreviation for?

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

I've had this model for about three months now. We've tried to set it up and did so at one point, but having a Hitachi tv the remote control does not work, even putting in the right codes. So that went out the window for a start. Like "January" said the manual isso difficult to follow and has a lot in it that is not at all easy to understand. I was in the process of getting another machine, but I think I'll persevere a bit longer. If the online retailer sent me another remote or tell me why the codes are not being accepted, then that wouldn't be so bad. But when you've got a problem after buying something online the retailer never wants to know! At least the shops are more accommodating than online traders!

        not for me

I've just finished decorating my living room and am I the process of upgrading my electrical goods for the new look room, the first thing I bought was a Samsung DVD SH893M as I like to watch DVD's instead of the television at night as usually there's nothing much on to watch.

I paid £149.00 from Curry's which may seem a lot to pay for a DVD player but this one has HDD recorder with a digital tuner.
The model I bought is a nice sleek black and comes with an instruction manual which is quite bulky and has about 100 pages or more, which is a little complicated to read all at once.
You have to keep refering to the booklet to be able to operate the machine as it's not a straight forward process and for me who isn't really technically minded I would have liked it to be more simpler to understand.

It has many functions and has built in digital tuner, dolby surround sound, a 160GB hard disk, a USB port for connecting external hard drives with photos, music or video, and an HDMI connector for attaching to the latest widescreen TVs.
Remote control, cable, user guide, quick-start guide.
        Freeview tuner, CD ripping.

As you can see there are many functions to contend with and I had difficulty setting it up, even though I tried to follow the instruction manual I couldn't find certain functions and operate the freeview tuner. In the end I had to get someone who knew what they were doing to come and set it up for me.

On the plus side the picture and sound quality are very good and I was happy with this.

On the down side I found it did not record a set programme but was not sure if this was me just not being able to understand the opertaing system having tried a few times and not got it to do this.

There are long menus to got through to get to the record and playback function and the machine had to be on standby for timed recordings to start recording. It didn't automatically start recording, and it didn't warn you that there was a timed programme about to begin. It also didn't automatically store programmes which I thought it should have.

There is a slight delay between pressing the remote button and reaction of the recorder and I also found that the recorder froze a few times, the only way to get out of this was to turn off the power and turn it on again to start the process again.
It has froze during watching freeview too so I wasn't really impressed with this new DVD/HDD player.
You expect new things to perform perfectly.
I thought it may be a fault in the machine, but found it to be a common fault after reading some customer feedback from other sites on the product.

At the end of a unhappy relationship with this product I took it back and got a credit note to put towards something else, as I was not happy with the performance of the machine. Or the uncomprehensable instruction manual and I really wouldn't recommend you to buy this at all.
