      I love it!

This is a review of the Smeg DF6FABX Dishwasher which we have just had reinstalled in our kitchen after a house move and a juggle-about with appliances and floor space. I have this in the silver model and it is just beautiful.

This dishwasher has the retro SMEG Lettering along the base of the machine and a silver handle in the centre at the top. A firm tug to this opens the machine and reveals all the buttons on the top (concealed inside). Inside are two tiers, the base also holds a matching silver cutlery basket.

There are not many buttons on the machine so it doesn't get too confusing but you can do a quick wash, half load, delay timer (up to 12 hours), and a total aqua stop feature allows you to open the machine mid flow should you need to and the water stops flowing (not that I recommend opening the dishwasher in the middle of a cycle as it can get hot!). The machine has ten programmes in total but I must admit that most of the time I just go for the 60 degree wash. The programme takes 45 minutes from start to finish which is fine by me.

On the energy efficient front, this machine gets an A rating, and I don't think you can do better than that. A further break down statistics wise; energy consumption: 1.08kWh per cycle; Water consumption: 15 litres per cycle; estimated annual energy consumption: 210kWh per year and the estimated annual water consumption: 3,000 litres per year.

Apart from cleaning food from the filter which I don't do as much as I ought to, the machine has a light to indicate when the salt and rinse aid are low and need refilling. I use a dishwasher cleaner once a month which runs on an empty machine, normal programme. You can use any tablets or washing powder you like as long as they are dishwasher compatible.

      My observations
This is a slightly larger appliance than a normal dishwasher in height, although it is freestanding and not meant to be integral at all. Dimensions of dishwasher in cm: (H)88.5, (W)59.8, (D)62.7. Dimensions of recess required in cm: (H) 89.5, (W)60.8, (D)63.7. It has a silver lid on it that makes it too high for fitting under the worktop which is designed for a normal height so anyone considering this as a purchase should take this into account.

Also inside the machine, there is a maximum plate diameter of 30 cm. Any higher and it interrupts the spin of the water jet and your wash will not be done properly. I have made this mistake a few times with awkward sized items and even diner plates which need to be on a slight lean when in situ. I now give the 'orbital spray' jet a spin before by hand to check it can get around without interruption.

I never know what this exactly means in dishwasher terms, as I like to wash all sorts of pots, pans, bowls and kitchenelia, but this machine has its capacity set at 14 place settings. All I know is that it is large on the outside and large on the inside too! Our first dishwasher sat hidden in a single cupboard (and that was second hand) so moving from that to this made a big difference.

Once the cycle is complete, the machine takes a while to cool down and although you can remove the contents at your peril, it is wise to wait a while as the plates are super-heated. You can hear the fans blowing in the machine to cool down but if I am around I usually open the door to save energy and speed up the process (or is that just me being impatient?!).

Are you sitting down? For this is no cheap dishwasher, at the moment it retails from Homebase at £949 and that's got £20 knocked of the price! We have also seen this model in a B&Q showroom priced at a nice round £1000 although it is not on their website.

      Final word
I love my silver Smeg retro styled dishwasher and have tried for a balanced review here, pointing out where I think it fails on dimensions but I think this is outweighed by its performance. I was lucky to have the opportunity to buy this from a friend at a reduced price when she won it and it was surplus to her requirements. It cleans our pots to a high standard and after a year of washing up by hand I wanted to wrap my arms around it and hug it when we were able to reinstall it in our kitchen.
