“ Sony DPF-D1020 - Digital photo frame - flash 2 GB - 10" - 800 x 480 - black „
I bought this digital photo frame as a treat for myself after we had redecorated the living room. I'd always wanted one and after browsing around a few stores I settled on this frame by Sony. It cost me £59.99 on Amazon which I though was quite reasonable when compared with the price of other digital frames and given that Sony are a high-quality brand.
--- The Look ---
The frame has a simple but stylish design which seems well-made. The glossy black frame is quite thick and has the silver Sony logo at the bottom and surrounds the large 10.2" LCD screen. The frame is quite weighty which makes it feel high-quality although it is still perfectly easy to move around. The frame also comes with a convenient remote control which saves having to make the epic walk from one side of the living room to the other!
--- Features ---
The frame has quite a versatile range of features. The internal memory of 2GB allows it to hold up to 4000 photos. This is a massive amount and I haven't even come close to approaching the limit (I currently have about 250 photos on mine). To keep things interesting there are 10 different slideshow patterns and 17 clock and calendar designs so you can change how you want to view things. Aside from photos the frame can also play videos which have been recorded on a digital camera. One of my favourite features is the ability to add background music by plugging in a USB stick or media card to import songs. I love just sitting and watching a set of photos go by while listening to a good song played over the top. The format of the photos must be JPEG, TIFF, BMP or RAW, music mp3 and video must be in Motion JPEG format. The frame also has an accurate smart sensor so that photos are automatically flipped to orient them into portrait or landscape as needed. The frame is quite energy efficient as it automatically switches to power-saving standby mode when the display isn't being used. Finally there is a search option to browse through stored photos and videos according to folders, events or tags. I imagine this would be a particularly useful if you had 4000 photos to look through!
--- Functionality & Usage ---
The quality of the picture is excellent. The screen is really quite large and the frame shows the photos in a lot of detail and really bright, stunning colour. You can still see the image clearly from across the room. I don't watch videos very often at all on the frame although they are also very good quality and play smoothly with no stopping or jerkiness.
It is easy to keep clean by giving it a wipe with a dry cloth and surprisingly doesn't attract much dust. The black colouring also means that any marks are hard to see although the smooth surface is very prone to accumulating fingerprints.
--- Summary ---
Overall, I'm really glad I bought this. Although I don't use it very often - mostly when we have friends round - when I do I'm always struck by how lovely the picture is. Not only is it great to look at but the range of features such as the clock and calendar make it a useful item to have around. I've never had any problems with the frame and it works exactly as it should so I would recommend.
The Sony DPF D1020 is a ten inch digital photo frame capable of playing videos and photo slideshows. To be honest I can't compare this model to any others because this is the first digital photo frame that I've owned, but I can tell you what functions I found helpful and which aspects I liked against what I found difficult.
On pulling the unit out of the box it definitely impresses with it's sleek and slick appearance. It is very smooth and glossy on the front (which also, as a downside, means it's a bit of a fingerprint magnet so I recommend handling it with a cloth where possible) and has a great minimalist, classy look about it.
When you first turn the digital frame on the SONY logo at the front lights up and the unit comes to life. The great thing though is that once you have it playing your desired media the logo, which is not embossed on the unit but is simply lit up from within the frame, disappears, i.e. the light behind it goes out. This is great I think because a logo underneath all your images is really frustrating and distracting I think. A definite plus for the unit based on that!
The thing that I really had problems with with this Sony frame is getting my media into a format that it would play. Photos seemed pretty easy and it just runs through all of those but I also wanted to play some video on this unit and that was really tricky. It doesn't take any of the usual .mov or .mp4 files that most editing software and cameras product, but only the rather rare .MPEG. For me this meant hours of fiddling and downloading various file converters online before I could finally get the video into a format the player could read. That was annoying!
That being said, now that I have the format down-pat it really is just a case of plug and play with the unit. I use a normal USB stick in this machine (which is great because it seems many similar units only take USB-2 which is the mini USB version and for which you need an adaptor) and it really is just a case of plugging it in and turning the unit on. It will also automatically loop your video or slideshows so that's one less thing you need to worry about. If not though you can set this up easily with the remote.
The unit will turn itself off after a few hours I guess in case you left it on and forgot. I don't find this to be a problem but if you do want it running all the time you'll need to remember to hit the play button on the remote or plug it out and back in again at the power if you want it to re-start.
All in all I am happy with this unit and am even considering buying another.
