Compact little camera that you can take anywhere.

When it comes to photography I'm a dinosaur, I love film cameras and have had quite a few in my day. But a couple of years back my other half decided he'd pull me kicking and screaming into the 21st centuary and bought me the Olympus x-43 Digital Camera for my birthday.

For such a small camera, it measures just 3.5 inches x 2 inches x 1 inch it is packed full of different features. It takes pictures up to 14 mega pixels, this can be adjusted if you want to get more pictures on your memory card, 5 x optical zoom, which enables you to take close ups of your subject, but without having to move. Digital Image Stabilization, which helps to avoid blurry images and a 2.7 inch LCD monitor. When you switch the camera on, you'll find that there are a variety of different effects that you can use when you take your photo, from one that looks like a pencil drawing to fisheye, there's even an option which will stitch multiple photos together so that you get a panoramic effect. It's powered by two AA Alkaline batteries, or you can use rechargable ones, but you have to change the battery setting, and the normal batteries must be Alkaline, trust me, I once put another type in and the camera wouldn't work. Until this point I never realised that AA batteries came in different forms, but they do, so be aware of this.

Uploading the pictures from your camera to a pc or laptop is done via a USB cable which comes as standard with the camera.

I've come to love my camera, I still prefer film, but this one has been everywhere with me and has taken lots of happy memories.

My one gripe and it's the same with most digital camers, it doesn't have a view finder so sometimes, especially in sunny conditions you can't actually see the screen to take your picture.

I had an Olympus fe-120 but dropped it and the lens is a bit dodgy now - unless I press it upwards - so thought I would make a quick purchase and found the x-42 for a bargain price! Big mistake; this is easily the worst quality picture taker I have ever had. Throwing it away.

      Great product!

I'm not a wonderful photographer, and am often disappointed with the pictures I take, but this camera really helps me out! Lots of features on it, like zoom in/out, different settings for different types of light etc. However, not being a real technie I tend to leave it on the auto setting, and so far have taken shots that are good enough to frame!

Transfer from the camera to the computer is really easily via a USB cable that is supplied with the camera, and it's really quick.

It does come with an instruction booklet that will tell you everything you want to know, but to be honest I just started clicking away and fiddling about with it and found it very easy to use. Recently used it to video the hunt going through a nearby town on Boxing Day and it captured the sound and images very well.

Easily stores for holidays - I put mine in a old leather fabric glassess case.

Watch out for it in Argos, as they have exclusive sales on it!

As for battery life, I only had to change the batteries once when we went on a ten day trip to Italy, and we were using it constantly for photos and videos.

decent camera let down by annoying glitches

I bought this Olympus x-42 from Argos several years ago. Since then it has been used on holidays and at home and has even been on safari. In that time I have found it to be a practical and easy to operate camera which produces pictures of a reasonable quality.

        The basic spec -

        12 mega pixels
        5 x zoom
        aa batteries
        video mode
        digital image stabilization

        The good

Its an exremely easy camera to get to grips with. The menu layout is clear and easy to navigate, and the few buttons on the rear of the camera are straight forward to use. The camera is capable of some strikingly good quality pictures when the light conditions are good and you have the right mode selected, potrait for a head shot landscape for lanscape etc. Its small enough to fit in your front pocket or in the glovebox of your car and seems to stand up well to a bit of punishment, (I`ve dropped it several times and it keeps on working). The camera comes with a software disc which allows pictures to be tranfered easily from the camera to your laptop using the supplied cable. I like the fact it works using aa batteries as they are easy to source if you are away on holiday.

        The Bad

In common with many budget digital cameras there is a big delay between pressing the shutter button and the camera actually taking a picture, not very good for trying to take anything other than a static subject. Whilst filming in video mode using the zoom in or out function makes a lot of noise and spoils the palyback of any videos you have made.

        In conclusion

A decent mix of usability and good quality pictures but with some annoying niggles.

        Disadvantages

        GREAT FOR PHOTOS ONLY

I purchased this as I had been told by a friend that Olympus were the best in this field. This was my first digital camera and so I wanted something that was fairly straightforward to use. The deciding factor for me was that it was 12 megapixels and was half the manufacturers recommended price. I was slightly disapointed with the overall look of the camera - shiny black plastic type material and the light weight of it made it feel somewhat flimsy. It wasn't until I got home and realised I should have bought a memory card and rechargable batteries so after returning to the shop and making sure I had everything I needed I tried it out for the first time. The set up was really easy and the pictures were of fantastic quality. I expected the video quality to be the same high standard but how disapointing, very grainy and poor, and sound could only be played back through a tv or after being uploaded onto the computer. All cables and software disc were provided but the bad quality video really let this camera down, such a shame as the photo quality was out of this world. For this reason I wouldn't buy this camera again.

          Disadvantages

          Very poor camera

I pretty much have about 2 of these cameras that DON'T WORK whatsoever. The reliability of these cameras is absolutely poor. I've now switched to Nikon/Sony and maybe Samsung but I won't be buying a next Olympus camera. I've pretty much missed out on a lot of great Photo Ops because of their cameras!

Here's the main issues with the camera, i.e., when it is actually working.

          1. Very, very slow processing time between pics. I know the camera is cheap, but I mean, at least 5 seconds or so between snaps and that is absolutely outrageous.
          2. You need an awfully lot of light for you to not use the flash thus, your battery life will suffer in the process resulting in less pictures taken and missed photo ops, or more expense with backup batteries which makes no sense to me as a camera must be able to take at least 100 pics b4 going out on you this cant do that. Now I know why it's cheap......

This is a great little compact camera with lots of ability. I would recommend reading of the manual thoroughly to become aware of all the features, and lots of trying it out to familiarise yourself with its abilities. Don't forget to check the settings when you go to use it or set it back at and auto setting when finishing with it if you use the various options. Having gone from a 'point and shoot' camera to this I have left it on the wrong settings a couple of times and lost some good pictures. I am learning from my mistakes however. With the abilities and the compactness I find it a great little camera to carry anywhere and happily fits in my handbag. I find the batteries don't drain too quickly and unlike some seem to keep their charge when not in frequent use.

Good camera. I like it. :]

This is a great camera. I have only had it for 7 months, but it is in my opinion - GREAT! The main things that i like about the camera are:

            - How easy it is to use the menus
            - The sizing and positioning of the buttons (great for someone with bad eye sight like me! :])
I also liked the design, which was the great influence that lead me to buy this camera, I have taken it everywhere with me, when I go for nights out, on holiday, and to the zoo last month! Haha :]

One of the things I like also was that you do not have to wait for ever like you do with other top brand camera before it will take a picture. You just point and shoot and it will pop up the screen almost instantly.

I also like the software that came with it which makes it nice and easy to get the photos from the camera into the folders which I set up so that i can find the one that I want to upload to the internet quickly and easily!

              Stylish and light Camera

To start of saying that this camera is a very elegant stylish handheld camera, it is really great for taking pictures, this is because it takes high quality pictures, it has 12Mpix which is great for those who want their pictures to look great. I love this camera so much because of it's looks and it's weight, because it is very light and it is so stylish, alos it is very easy to carry around with you at all times.

I personally find this camera very useful for everyday use, just take it out of your bag and take a shot of an event when in a resturant or in a park or anywhere when having fun. I would recommend this camera to anyone wanting great looking photos. this Olympus X-42 digital camera has also got a 5 x times zoom in which great to zoom for peoples faces when taking photos.

                Fantastic camera

I loved this Digital Camera. I found it easy to use and took excellent photo's. It is very slim and found for carrying it out anf about very light and not taking up loads of space in my hand bag. It is very stylish and sleek. The zoom on the camera is fantastic and doesnt take out of focus pictures it also has many different options for what kind of picture you would like to take ie babies, night, party, snow, candle light. I found that particulalrly useful as it means that on all occasions my photo's come out clear and no blurs. It's a 12Mpix camera and this is easily noticeable as soon as you turn it on the quality is out of this world. I would recommend this camera to everyone as it is just fantastic and I take it everywhere with me and get some quality pictures.

Excellent camera for first time users or more experienced photographers

I was bought this camera for Christmas and can't fault it. I wanted a camera that was easy to use, high mega-pixel and a good zoom. When we were shopping for a camera we couldn't find one at a reasonable price that had a better zoom. It also looks more expensive than it actually was. The photos are still clear even when it is zoomed in to the max. I have taken better pictures with this camera than I have with more expensive cameras. You can even crop the picture you have taken on the camera itself. The menu structure on the camera is easy to use and the buttons are all clearly marked. The software that is included in with the camera is also easy to use and has a brilliant how to section for first time users. Photos can be easily uploaded to your PC and it comes with a memory card adapter. I thoroughly recommend this camera

An ok camera once you've learnt what all the icons mean

We brought this from Argos. We wanted a camera which operated on AA batteries (old one required adaptor to charge it) so it made it more reliable when out and batteries ran out (just buy some more!) and had a nice big screen.

However, if you're used to using a viewfinder and not always having the screen on (last camera had a viewfinder and you didn't use up battery power as quick because you could turn the main screen off) then you'll find this one strange. I'm used to using a viewfinder so find this odd as it doesn't have one.

                    Nice and slim.
The instruction manual is on CD and would be better as a book. I want to be able to take the book away with me and read it at my leisure. It's not a simple point and shoot camera so you do need to know what you are doing. I still don't know want all the different icons mean, will have to print the relevant pages off. The basic instruction manual has 4 pages of English and 170 odd pages of other languages.

Have purchased a MicroSD card (easy enough to get from off the internet or any supermarket or electronic shop) to give it more memory. Haven't printed pictures of yet so don't know what they're like.

Wouldn't buy this camera again but would buy similar.

                      Disadvantages

Olympus have made an awful camera, despite the nice looks I can't recommend this it at all

At first glance the X-42 looks impressive, complete with 12 megapixels, 5x Optical zoom, 2.7" LCD display, face detection, red eye correction and more. This all seemed impressive to me and so I bought it thinking I'd picked up a sub £80 camera with an array of features.

Of course, I did say all of the above features LOOK impressive, that is before you open the box. Lets start with the picture quality. The '12 megapixel' camera produced blurry, poor quality pictures for 9/10 snaps I took. Although the Olympus is easy to use, it's quality is shocking.

Moving on to build quality... which is also, pretty sub-standard. You can tell Olympus didn't spend a whole lot of time - or money - making the outer case or buttons, both of which feel tacky.

The red eye correction rarely worked and the optical zoom was extremely tempermental and sometimes unresponsive.

Needless to say I highly recommend you avoid this camera at all costs.

My husband bought this to replace his Canon powershot in an emergency. Picture quality is fine for everyday family use and the price was very reasonable.Once set up and configured, it is capable of producing some very nice images for the family photo album. It has also been used at a friends wedding and again produced nice quality images. The zoom and other functions are easy to use, and images stay fairly stable when at maximum zoom.

                        Buy a Cannon instead.

                        Digital Cameras Olympus-X42 ---- don't buy

For anybody thinking of buying a digital camera for Christmas I would strongly advise against buying the Olympus X-42.

We bought an X-42 to replace our 4 year old Samsung Digimax A6.

The dinky little 12mp Olympus cost slightly more than the 6mp Cannon did over 4 years ago but in comparison the picture quality is dreadful, the lens seems good (as one would expect from Olympus) but when you try and blow up & crop an image it appears grainy and lacks detail in fact my old 1.2mp mobile phone takes pictures that are as almost good, I suspect the image sensor is just not up to the job.

The other fault is it takes an age to process a picture before the next one can be taken.

A real shame because it is a charming little camera and having enjoyed owning Olympus cameras in the past I was expecting good things from it.

I am now trying to get my money back from Argos. Even if I don't get my money back I will buy a Cannon before going on holiday next summer as the Samsung has started chewing through batteries at an enormous rate.
