The Nikon Coolpix S10 is a great camera! With its 6 Megapixel and 10 x Optical Zoom the picture quality is always high. It has many settings, and once you can remember where they are, you can take pictures on settings such as fireworks, party, indoors, landscape etc. It also offers gridlines to take landscape shots and panoramic shots enabling you to really catch that moment! The best feature on this camera is the swivel lense which allows you to take pictures of yourself whilst being able to see the screen. This is great as you don't have to keep stopping people and asking them to take your picture! However this camera is not perfect. It doesn't have a viewing lense so in bright light it is sometimes hard to see what you are taking pictures of (reflections off the screen). The lense cap is also weak and ours broke quite soon after buying it. We also ahd problems with our focus not working. However, Nikon were very good and repaired this problem quickly for us. The last issue I can think of is that taking pictures in the dark by hand often come out blurry so I would recommend using a tripod for those night pictures! Other than that I can't fault it!
I am really pleased with this camera and there are only two things I don't like about it.Firstly, there is no optical viewfinder, only the screen. In bright light it can be difficult to see the subject properly.Secondly, I would like to be able to lock the focus on infinity. This is because if, for example, you want to take timelapse pictures of the moon going across the sky the camera tries to refocus every time it tries to take a frame. If the sky is clear it can fail to do this properly. Clouds going across can help, but they spoil the picture.Anyway, a great camera and if mine breaks I will be very disappointed if I cannot replace it.Robin Graham
I upgraded to this camera from another much older Nikon. As far as I'm aware, the S10 is no longer produced, but you'll probably still find some new examples at reasonable prices. The camera has a compact body which widens out around the lens. In the 'closed' position, the lens faces up, but the lens part of the camera can be turned through 270º to point in almost any direction: this is really handy for photographing over people's heads in a crowd, or for getting clever low level angle shots. The 6.0 megapixel resolution is good, but just as good is the excellent lens with 10x optical zoom. This may not be an SLR, but it offers pretty awesome quality for a compact digital camera. The screen is a good size and shows ok images - I've noticed that some shots in certain lighting conditions (really colourful sunrises and sunsets) don't look as good on the camera's screen as they do when they've been uploaded to my computer. Image processing is nippy, and importantly for me, the camera can power up and be taking pictures in less than a couple of seconds. Overall, a very good compact digital camera, now on sale at some decent prices (around £100). Keep an eye on the plastic lens cap - it has a very flimsy catch that holds it shut, and this has broken on mine leading to a flapping lens cap. That said, that's the only negative thing I've experienced with this great little camera.
Packing powerful imaging performance, 10x zoom capability and a stylish swivel design into compact dimensions, the COOLPIX S10 makes it easy to take great-looking shots from more imaginative angles.
With a distinctive wave-surface design and a high-quality finish, the COOLPIX S10 is attractive as the images it achieves. But even more impressively, the COOLPIX S10 features 6.0-effective Megapixel image resolution as well as a built-in 38-380mm (35mm equivalent) 10x Zoom-Nikkor lens - making it easy to compose everything from close portraits to wide-open scenery with fine detail and vivid color. And because the distinctive camera body incorporates a swivel design for the lens, users can set their creativity free, holding the camera overhead to capture action over the crowd or composing from down low to get a different perspective, while the large, bright 2.5-inch LCD with a 170-degree viewing angle lets users frame the shot with accuracy.
With the advantage of VR (Vibration Reduction) capability, the COOLPIX S10 allows users to overcome camera shake to take sharper, more stable pictures in a range of shooting situations. And as the camera offers increased light sensitivity up to impressive ISO 800, users can get great-looking results in lower light without the need for an extended exposure and select much faster shutter speeds when taking pictures of fast-moving subjects.
The COOLPIX S10 additionally features a handy One-touch portrait button that provides direct access to three unique in-camera Nikon image innovations - Face Priority AF that automatically detects and achieves sharp focus on people's faces wherever they are in the frame, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix that can automatically overcome the red-eye effect sometimes caused by flash, and Nikon's D-Lighting that can rescue underexposed images or shots with too much back light. And the COOLPIX S10 takes convenience even further with its supplied lithium battery that can take hundreds of shots on a single charge and PictBridge compatibility that means there's no need to use a computer at all when printing - just connect the COOLPIX S10 straight to a PictBridge-compatible printer and print directly without delay.
An ample choice of Scene modes makes operation even easier in a wide range of common shooting situations. Simply select the most appropriate mode and the COOLPIX S10 automatically determines and sets the optimum combination of settings. In all there are 15 Scene modes to choose from and 4 of them also feature Scene assist, which helps users to achieve more attractive composition. The COOLPIX S10 also adds new entertainment to photography with Nikon's Pictmotion function that lets users combine images, movies, music and visual styles for automatically produced audiovisual shows, in-camera. And because the LCD of the COOLPIX S10 has an impressively wide viewing angle of 170 degrees, it's easy for everyone to gather round and watch Pictmotion shows together.
Like all other cameras in the highly popular COOLPIX range, the COOLPIX S10 also comes complete with Nikon's exclusive PictureProject software. Powerful, yet exceptionally user-friendly, PictureProject makes it a snap to transfer, organize, edit and share photos with family and friends.
