This is my dads camera, this isn't the most practical of cameras for someone like me who goes on holiday to Spain or Greece once a year but when I told my father that I was going to Australia he insisted I take this along rather than my compact digital camera. And when I look at the resulting photographs, I'm glad that I took his advice.
This is a high end professional camera, it's rather bulky and quite heavy when compared to my other little camera. The lens alone is huge. It's more like an old camcorder lens than a camera one. The dimensions of the whole unit are D 10, H 8.1, W 11.8cm and it weighs 445 g. The photos are what makes carrying around this monster worth while. It takes 14 mega pixel pictures this results in sharp, crisp, wonderfully detailed pictures. This is especially evident when talking photos of vast landscapes or wildlife, of which Australia had plenty. It's not as straight forward to use as a standard compact camera, my father gave me a few lessons to guarantee I was up to scratch. So I do recommend reading the large instruction booklet and having a few practice shots and also looking up advise online.
There are loads of photo programs such as sports mode for fast moving images, fireworks mode that I found worked best when photographing neon lights at night. And also the snow, sunset, portrait and about a million more. I was surprised that it had the same face detecting function as my more modern looking camera. This means that way taking a photo of lest say a person standing out on the beach it will detect where the person or persons face is and make sure it's in perfect focus, instead on focusing in and out on the moving background.
I also used this for recording video, it has a good resolution of 1280 x 720 although I must admit I used my iPad to record most of the video from that holiday this was used mostly for taking photographs and also if you do record video with it, the memory on your memory card eats up much quicker.
It has a optical Zoom of x 24 this is the best kind of zoom as the lens does the work and the pictures come out great. You can view these on the three inch colour LCD on the back of the camera before deciding to keep.
This was an amazing camera when it came to taking quality photos while in Australia. But I wouldn't use it for everyday use.
