With todays new gadgets having more and more fancy additions each time and needing to be upgraded before you have even got them home sometimes it is nice to be able to purchase something that offers up simple technology that works and it was for this reason I decided to purchase a Flip camcorder but has it proven to be a good choice?
The flip is a very compact and lightweight camcorder that you can carry with you in a pocket so that you never need to miss a moment.
The camcorder comes with an inbuilt storage of 2GB which allows you to store an hour of video without the need for any additional pieces of kit.
Simple and quick transfer of your recordings is achieved by the inbuilt USB (USB2 can be achieved with this) connector which simply flips out from the side and you then plug straight into your PC. The camcorder also comes with the ability to plug straight into the TV directly and you get your cable for this included in your package.
The camcorder records at a good standard with a 30 frames per second rate and a resolution of 640 x 480 allowing for a clear video which may not be in HD but is still of a great quality.
Excellent value for money and looks mean this is something which is going to appeal to a lot of people and is a great gift for teenagers who will be happy to video all their antics and upload them to Facebook and You Tube or for the grandparents for those family moments to be captured and put on to their computer.
The camera takes 2 AA batteries and so you needn't worry about having to have it charged if something big is happening as you simply put in a new set of batteries. The battery life is also good and you will easily get your hour of recording in before these will run out.
The great design of the camcorder allows for you to have full control with little effort with a bright and clear 1.5 inch screen at the top of the rear of camera and the controls all just below this making it easy for all to use. The record button and zoom functions (digital zoom x2) are all together and simple to navigate and a delete button on the back makes for quick and easy deletion.
A great built in wide range microphone allows for you to capture all that is going on and hear things clearly and with a built in speaker on the camcorder you can check this out by watching your video on the 1.5 inch screen whilst on the move.
Not in HD but really not something that is a problem to me.
Overall this is a great little camcorder which offers out of the box point and shoot capabilities. Simple to handle and easy to use the camcorder makes recording special moments a lot more fun as you don't need one person having to miss out (you can pass this around and everyone can have a turn). Great value for money and a stylish look are the things that got me to buy this but once I found how easy it was to flip out the USB arm and transfer the video then I became a fan. I highly recommend the Flip camcorder to anyone interested in capturing more of those special moments.
I recieved this as a gift after I expressed interest in making amateur films - unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. The camera is incredibly easy to use, with only two buttons you're going to use a lot: the On switch and the big, red Record button. This streamlined design doesn't feel elegant but rather cheap, as though they couldn't afford more features. The zoom function is fine if you're into that sort of thing, but personally I never use digital zoom. The physical product feels sturdy enough, but my sister's screen broke after a relatively short drop, so be careful! The flip out USB connector from which the product gets its name works great, but left me wondering why it was necessary - why did I pay a premium to solve a problem that really wasn't there? The video that it takes is standard VGA fare; the same kind my digital camera (which cost less and also takes HD photos) can capture.
But perhaps I'm missing the point. From what I've read after buying it, it seems that this is aimed much more at children or casual filmers - people who just want something they can press record on with no hassle. If that's what you want, this certianly fits the bill.
I have had this video camera for over a month now and am really pleased with it. It is so easy to use with very few buttons. There is a Power Switch on the side and a Red record button to record with. The menu's are all controlled with arrows, and are very straight forward to use.
The sound quality of the recordings are very clear and the added bonus of zoom is excellent.
The price tag of these tiny video cameras are great value for money, and the ability to pick up and use with seconds is fantastic.
One of the disadvantages is the fact that the size of the camera it self is quite bulky in the hand, and the screen is rather small. Another issue I had was with the software that comes with the camera. I could not edit the videos the way I wanted to. Though with file conversion this was possible.
Overall, this is a great gadget to get people started with digital video and is easy to use by anyones standards.
I really do love this video camcorder, the flip video for me offers something different. having bought this for £80 from Amazon i thought it was great value for money for a camcorder. I really liked the style because it comes in a funky orange colour and white. one of my favourite things is the size because it really is incredibly small. It is more the size of a camera and yet it has the functions of a camcorder. I found this really useful when I wanted to take it with me on different trips.
The battery lasts for a good amount of time which I thought was really useful because it prevents me having to change the batteries all the time! Another major benefit of this camcorder for me was that it uses SD card memory as opposed to mini-dv tapes. It even has 60 minutes worth of video footage without the SD card which is just great. I found that this was ample time for when going on a small trip, however I must admit I didn't find it quite limiting when on a longer holiday. Perhaps the best point about this camera I found was its ease of use. I really did find it very easy to operate it and it really is just point and shoot.
The video is quality is very impressive given the price and I was really happy with it. I really do think that this camcorder represents good value all round. The screen size is 1.5 inch which is just brilliant I found for looking at your video's you have just taken. It really does offer so much in such a small size which is why I like it so much!
I've had my Flip Video for almost a year. My kids bought it for my birthday last year, and it's been all over the place since then. I've used it at home and away, and have some really nice quality videos to show for it. My daughter took it with her when she cycled across China for charity, which shows how simple it is to use because she got lots of filming done at the same time as riding a bicycle.
What it looks like
It's very small and lightweight, and the casing is metal but with a rubberised skin. So it's smooth to the touch without being slippery. It's rectangular and about the size of a packet of extra long cigarettes, and easily fits in your pocket.
At the front is the lens and microphone, and at the back there is a 1.5 inch LCD screen with the controls underneath.
The controls are very straightforward. On the left is the play button and on the right is the delete button. In the middle is a red button for recording and this is surrounded by a metal plate with four markings like the points of a compass. Where North would be is a plus sign for zooming in, and at South is a minus sign for zooming out. East is an arrow pointing to the right which moves forward one recording, and West is an arrow pointing left which moves back one recording.
On one side panel is the on/off switch and an indent with a little bar for fixing the wrist strap. On the other side panel there is a hole marked 'TV' to plug in the wire to connect and play videos directly from the Flip to the TV. On the same side is the flip up USB arm, for which the Flip is named.
On the bottom is a hole so that the Flip can be screwed onto a tripod or other mount. Also on the bottom is a sliding lock which, when unlocked, allows you to slide most of the front panel off, giving you access to the two AA batteries which power this camcorder.
How it works
It's very easy to use. You just switch it on, point and press the red record button. When you want to stop, you press the red button again. If you want to play back what you've recorded, you just press the play button. If you don't like what you recorded, you press the delete button.
You can record up to one hour of video at a time, and the batteries last a long time. I use rechargeable batteries and although I've never actually timed them, they seem to last for ages before they need recharging.
To copy to your computer, you just flip up the USB arm, and insert it into a USB port in your computer. The software is built into the Flip, so apart from prompting you to make some choices, it does all the rest for you. You can also capture photos from the video.
The picture quality is really good. Even playing it on my 32 inch TV, the picture was still crisp.
Where and How Much
It's on sale online and in stores, and you can get it for about £80. This time last year it cost £90, but worth every penny. We've had so much fun with it.
