I have been visiting sutton-in-ashfield for a long time now, mainly just for days out doing a bit of shopping here and there, very occasionally to spend an entire day there though, because whilst there are a great number of shops there, the town is small and you can do all the good shops very quickly. Towards the back of sutton there is outram street which is pretty much the high street of sutton with plenty of indian takeaways and about 4 charity shops. They change hands and close down/re open on a regular basis so you have to keep your eye out for a good one. The town has a massive sundial (pictured) in the main square and several benches around it. The square is absolutely huge given that this is quite a small town, and there is a large pedestrian only road leading up to the idlewells shopping centre. The shopping centre has it's own indoor market as well as lots of big name stores like peacoks and ryman stationers inside the glass building. The indoor market is quite crammed in and there is not much space to walk around stalls when you do want to have a look, most of the stock from people's stalls do end up on the floor which you should look out for. They sell things like DVD's, fruit and veg etc, all the stuff you'd normally buy at a big Tesco except you're helping the local businesses out. Parking is a real issue in Sutton-in-ashfield with very few public car parks in the town centre. KFC and McDonalds are usually full because people find the free parking in there very accessible and easy to get out of when there is a lot of traffic around. Taxi's are all over the place so if you need one there is always one nearby and they usually park right up to the roundabout by McDonalds when things get really busy. (a warning for motorists) Sometimes the local youth's can be a bit annoying with shouting and what not, acting up here and there but generally the locals seem relaxed and pleasant. Every town has its faults and for sutton i think that fault is the litter, there are quite a few sports around the town where littler is a problem and its not because of overflowing bins its people just being lazy and dumping their rubbish everywhere.
Sutton in Ashfield boasts the largest Sundial in Europe, it was meant to be a statement that would become a major tourist attraction in the centre of this small town. It probably would of been just that if the eye sore had ever actually told the time! It is completely useless unfortunatly. Sutton also has a small indoor shopping centre called the Idlewells centre. It is very bright and has a glass roof, which yes you have guessed it, is just like a greenhouse! Hot in summer cold in winter. Within the centre you can expect to find shops such as Argos, New Look, Woolworths, Peacocks, greggs and many more. There is also an indoor market that can be accessed through the centre that has all your usual market stalls with most of the owners having stalls all their lives! There is also an outdoor market that has had all new covering and looks much more appealing. A new leisure centre is currently being built close to the town centre and i must admit it looks very impressive. A modern building that will contain a swimming pool, ice skating rink and all the other usual leisure centre activities. Hopefully it will take alot of the 'Chavs' off the street corners which they seem to lovingly adopt. Sutton in Ashfield has not always been the nicest place in the world but thinkgs do seem to be looking up for this town riddled with unemployment and ASBOS.
