When I first started cycling to work a few times a week I would often spend the evenings coughing and spluttering. At first I thought I could be suffering with asthma but after a little research realised that it may be down to the pollution from exhausts in the air. The solution was an anti pollution mask and for the bargain price of £18, I could pick one up. I had seen cyclists wear these in the past and thought them to be a little dramatic if I'm honest (!), but the difference has been unbelievable. Gone are my coughing and spluttering evenings! The neoprene mask is easy to fit and fastens with elastic at the back of the neck. It's really comfortable to wear and the only downside is that your face gets a little sweaty from the vapour from your breath. This doesn't take long to get used to and feels just the same as wearing a balaclava which my husband favours on the colder days. The carbon filter is what cuts out the pollution from the exhaust fumes, but will also work just as well for allergy sufferers to cut out the pollen in the air too. I don't suffer with hay fever, but I can't imagine how hard it must be to ride with watering eyes, so this mask would work wonders for allergy sufferers who ride. The mask really does work and when wearing it the air tastes and smells much fresher than when I don't have it on. It works against nuisance dusts too and effectively seals the nose and mouth from the outside world! It does have exhalation valves to release your air vapour and any water vapour, but as I mentioned you are left with a slightly sweaty face so it doesn't completely eradicate it. The Velcro fastening allows that one size fits all, and on one occasion when my husband was cycling more in rush hour traffic, he borrowed my mask and it fit him and his big head perfectly! The mask is machine washable so I could happily wash away his sweatiness from my lovely mask! (I hope he doesn't read this review!). Although I only use my mask when I'm cycling, the packaging states that it can be used for urban use such as cycling, motorcycling and walking. I think you may get a few funny looks if wearing this when walking, but what do I know!? The mask is really durable because of the material, and so I can see it lasting for years without fuss. For urban cyclists I would absolutely recommend this mask. It isn't really going to be of any use for cyclists who are riding through forests or anything like that, but for me and my occasional effort to remain fit and healthy in my ride to work once or twice a week, it allows that I still feel fit and healthy when I arrive and not full of nasty toxins from air pollution!
