When I was shopping for my girls first birthday I had in mind one of the Mega Bloks sets which are like large Lego pieces but I wasn't sure which one as there seemed so many to choose from. The different sets were suitable from different ages so obviously I wanted something that a 1 year old could safely play with. This Princess Castle set caught my eye when I was flicking through an Argos catalogue and as it is suitable from a year it looked ideal for my girls. What do you get? Contained within a plastic tub designed to look like a large Mega Block are approximately 30 Mega Blok pieces and a princess and pony figurines. There is a good variety of different shaped pieces and they are 3 different colours pink, yellow and green. The set comes with a sheet of stickers which are easy to match up to the Bloks using the picture on the tub. They have lasted really well and after a year of use are still looking really good. Playing with the set At a year old my girls enjoyed taking the pieces in and out of the tub progressing to picking up the tub and tipping them all out when they got strong enough. They also loved putting their other toys into the tub and if something went missing it was usually found in the tub. They weren't able to put the bloks together to start with but got a great deal of enjoyment from knocking down my attempts to build the castle. The only time I managed to complete it was when they weren't around but even then it didn't stay built long once they were back in the room. By 18 months they were starting to take more interest in putting the bloks together and would push together bloks of the same shape and colour, they were as impressed as I was with their first towers. My girls are 2 now and can confidently put the bloks together but are not yet advanced enough to be able to make the princess castle on the front of the box. I like that this toy still has plenty of scope for them and although it may be a while before they can build the castle I'm sure they will continue playing with these bloks until they can. The princess and pony figurines are very popular and slot onto the lid of the tub which doubles up as the base for the castle. Price and availability I purchased my set from Argos but can't remember how much I paid. It is currently available from Amazon for £8, RRP £12.99 which is great value for a set that will last your child through their toddler years and beyond. Would I recommend? Yes, I really like that this set makes something rather than relying on imagination to create things. You have enough pieces to be creative if you want but you can also wow your child with a princess castle. The bloks are hard wearing and although they have been chewed on they are still in excellent condition with no teeth marks or colour fading.
