Great, nutty chocolate from German company Ritter Sport.

On my recent return to the UK my parents had one main request: that I bring some Ritter Sport chocolate back with me. Although you can get a few flavours in the UK, the vast majority can only be bought in Germany itself and so the chocolate on offer is always a highlight of any visit to the country. For my dad I brought back my favourite flavour of Rum, Fruit and Nut (like Fruit and Nut but sooo much better) and for my mam I brought back a 'Vollnuss' bar, which is milk chocolate filled with whole hazelnuts. This can be bought from many shops in the UK but since my mam had never been able to find it herself, this is the one that she requested I bring back from Germany for her. I obliged, and so was amused when only a few days later while in Waitrose I saw this very bar for sale and so bought it in order to make a point and prove to my mam that you can buy it in Newcastle. We therefore enjoyed two bars of this in very quick succession, so along with having eaten several other bars in the past I now feel very qualified to write a review on it.

Ritter Sport Whole Hazelnuts is one of 25 flavours made by German chocolate company Ritter Sport, who are based outside of Stuttgart in South-western Germany. They've been my favourite chocolate brand ever since I visited the factory while on a school exchange several years ago. Since then I've tried as many flavours as possible, enjoying their unusual and often unique ideas, such as milk chocolate filled with yoghurt of varying flavours, chocolate with corn flakes and a chocolate filled with nougat.

This hazelnut bar is a fairly simple and traditional bar, however, as it is purely milk chocolate with whole hazelnuts built into it. I always find Ritter Sport milk chocolate to be of a very high quality and this bar is no exception, with the delicious chocolate that is neither too sweet nor too bitter beautifully complementing the hazelnuts. There is always an absolute abundance of nuts in these bars so you definitely get your money's worth here. The balance between nuts and chocolate is just right, in my opinion, but if you're more after a bar with only a spattering of nuts you're probably not going to be delighted with this one.

In terms of calories and other nutritional information it's on a par with most chocolate, which is between 500 and 600 calories per 100g. Ritter Sport is normally sold in 100g bars, which mean that they're about double the weight of your average chocolate bar so you'll have to be careful if you're trying not to overindulge. A bit of what you fancy once in a while, however, can only be a good thing so I'd definitely recommend giving it a go.

In conclusion, this is a delicious bar of chocolate from my favourite chocolate company. It's one of only a few Ritter Sport varieties available in the UK and while I would say that it is not one of my very favourites, it's probably the one I most enjoy that is available to buy in Blighty, along with the simple milk chocolate. Highly recommended.
