“ Brand: Mothercare / Type: Safety Gates „
***Why I brought***
The reason I brought the stair gate to childproof my house and stop my daughter climbing up the stairs or falling down them. She was only 6 months old then but was already able to go on her knees and kept rockiing back and forth so I thought it won't be long before she starts crawling. I did a bit of research on-line as to which stair gates to go for and I looked at few different brands. I didn't want to have to drill them into the wall so I only looked for the pressure fixed ones. After my research I decided to purchase Mothercare pressure fix stair gates as the specification fitted my criteria (even though it had mixed reviews about them). I have brought one for downstairs and one for upstairs.
***Packaging and spec***
I was abroad visiting my parents at the time and didn't need them right away so I decided to order them on-line and had them delivered to my local store which was free of charge. Stair gates came in quite large thin cardboard box which is recyclable. Each box included the fixings and tools you need to put them up as well as instructions. Each box included 1 x gate, 4 x screw adjusters, 4 x locking nuts, 2 x fixing cups with 2 screws, 2 x wall plugs, 2 x sticky pads, 1 x gate stop, 1 x spanner. The gates are made of metal and white in colour with the height of 78 cm.
Fits opening from 75-82cm - extensions increase fitting to 82-138cm, extension need to be purchased separately at the extra cost
Fixes with wall cups to minimise wall damage

I am not the best at DIY and so I left the assembly to my husband. First of all he checked whether we have all the fixings included as per instruction then looked over the instruction again to get familiar with the assembly steps. He managed to put them up without any help. It took him 30 minutes tops to put both stair cases up. Stair gates are fixed on the staircase by positioning the plastic cups onto the wall/stairs banister and tightening each screw until the gate is firmly in place. You can use sticky pads to use underneath the plastic cups to protect your wall, I just find it strange that you only get 2 sticky pads yet you need 4 plastic cups, it would have been nice to have 4 sticky pads to protect your banister too.
***Easy of use***
I have found one disadvantage to this stair gates. Basically, the gates are fitted in the metal frame if you like and once you fit them onto the stairs, the bottom of the stair gate frame then sits on the top of the step and therefore you would have to take care when going through the star gates as this metal bar can be potential trip hazard. Unfortunately we could not fit the stair gate parallel with the step to avoid having the metal bar on the top of stair due to the style of our banister and so we had to get used to stepping over the bar.
One hand opening is possible and actually I got used to open the gates with one hand only now even if I am not carrying my daughter. It took me some practice though; I have actually struggled to open the gates with two hands to start with lol. The gates open by pressing green part of the handle in and lifting the shallow end of the handle up. It is very easy with little practice but not too easy for toddler to manage to do it.
The gate can be opened inside or out depending of which way you prefer. I wanted my upstairs gate to open into the hall and so I used the second lock located at the bottom of the stair gates to do this. The lock is just two plastic tabs attached to the gate. The tabs can be turned down and used as a gate stopper. If you put the tab down on both sides, you won't be able to open the gate either way. Always ensure that the gate is closed by using the main lock though.
Gates are very easy to clean, I use very slightly damp to get the dust of it.
Gates cost £22.99, currently (Sept 2012) on offer for £19.99 and buy one get one half price and with free UK delivery, bargain!! Available at Mothercare stores or on-line.
I am happy with those stair gates. We have been using them for 12 months now without any problems. We had to slightly adjust the bottom gates once by tightening couple of screws. Gates look in excellent condition even after a year of use. The paint on our banister has been slightly scratched too but again not an issue after I have finished using them, I shall repaint the banister. Just remember the metal bar that you need to step over.
