We have two of these Maxi Cosi Priori XP car seats the first one we bought when our first son was ready for a stage 2 car seat. The second we bought in 2013 for our second son when I returned to work and needed to have a second car seat in our second car for the nursery pick ups that my husband would make, as I would need the first car seat for the drop off. We were so pleased with the performance of the car seat that it really was the only one we would consider for using again.
In the years between the two car seats I can't actually tell any difference in design which I personally find reassuring as it makes me think that they got it right first time and the design has a proven track record for safety and use.
Fitting the car seat is very straight forward you place the car seat at the side which you want the car seat to sit and then recline the seat for ease of movement. Don't try to do it without reclining as you just can't get access I find. You then place the seat belt through the sections highlighted on the car seat. I like the fact that these on ours are in red contrasting nicely with the black of the seat so I know I am getting it right. Once you have feed the belt through you then fasten the seat belt, from then you then use the button on the base and slide then section across the base of the seat to tighten the belt and put the seat back into a non recline position and away you go. It really only takes about 5 minutes to do this and whilst I personally find it easier to sit the car seat behind the drivers side as I am right handed so this makes it easier for me to do, it is still easy to do on the passengers side and do it from the left side. Once in place the seat is really secure and doesn't wobble or move about at all. This is both in our Ford Focus and KA and we never have any trouble with the car seat becoming loose or wobbling on journeys.
Adjusting the height of the harness inside the seat is easy to do with lifting the material up and moving the seat belts up and down once in place these don't move. To get a comfortable and secure fit for our sons never takes more than a few minutes and once you have the height correct you don't need to move it till they grow as it stays in place well. The tension for adjusting the width and tightness I find a bit more fiddler. This is an area I have to use a bit more frequently depending on the padding in his clothes for example. You depress the button underneath the fastening section and either pull the corded section at the base to make it tighter or puller both arm sections to make it looser and I always find it a bit tricky to get the tension right quickly and often need a few attempts to get it right so he can't wriggle out or be too tight so it is uncomfortable.
The comfort of the seat is great and both our sons when they have sat in the seat have fallen asleep on journeys meaning that it must be comfortable for them. I then use the recline feature to tilt them this is easy to do and I either pull in to do so or if I have a passenger then they reach round to do so and a quick press and pull with one hand and it tilts nice and smoothly and generally never wakes either or the boys. The main positions for the seat that we use are the upright or a full tilt when the boys have fallen asleep. The reason we tend to do the full tilt is to make it more reclining and more comfortable for them and to reduce the chances of their heads falling forwards and giving them neck strain. The position in recline allows them to not have their heads fall forward and be nice and comfortable. The built up section to the headrest area also allows this comfort to happen as well as be a safety feature and they are often rested into the head rest when asleep.
The clips to the side sections for holding the belt in place when not in use I find really helpful as it means if I hook the belt there when taking my son out when I come to put him back in I am not then having to fiddle around to get parts of the belt out from underneath him to get him strapped in. What this means is at times when he doesn't want to go in the car for example in the morning for the school run it makes it a quicker and less stressful job for me to get him securely into his seat.
The actual buckle it self is easy to put in you align the clips and then push into the socket and that's it. Undoing it is slightly harder as up press and pull the clips out at the same time with a slight degree of force. However I like this feature as it means both of my boys to date have never been able to undo the buckle themselves in the car. For my eldest this was necessary as he could undo his five point harness in the highchair with ease but failed with this one fortunately till he grew out of the chair.
The padded shoulder section on the belt seems to be comfortable and stops any rubbing on my son's skin when they have been in the seat and I like the padding this provides for comfort for them.
The cover is washable and I do have to say it is a pain getting it both on and off the seat to do so but it does wash well and has never shrunk on us. But due to its fiddly nature when I did come to toilet training my eldest I did use a car seat protector to reduce the amount of times I needed to take it on and off because it was so fiddly.
We have never so far (she says crossing fingers and toes) been in a crash with the boys in the seat so it is impossible to comment on how safe it has been in a crash but when I was researching buying the seats on the internet I was impressed by all the safety reports that this one has passed and it did get a very good Which report for safety so I am hopeful that if the worst was to happen then the boys would be well protected. As it is big, bulky and heavy and sits securely in place I do have faith that it would protect them and compared to some cheaper lighter versions I have seen in stores I think it is more robust.
The seats do wear well and have a good long life; I personally would definitely recommend these for toddlers and above. The seat is easy to fit, comfortable for children and hard for them to wriggle out of and undo the buckle. The only slight negative for me really is how fiddly it is to take the cover on and off to wash but I am not going to deduct a star for this as I think this is only a slight negative and doesn't detract from the overall use and appearance of the seat. So for me it is a full 5 stars for the Maxi Cosi Priori XP. It is available from the likes of Amazon, Mothercare and Halfords at full price £150 and I do think it justifies the cost. However it is often on offer for less than this so you can grab a bargain as we did for £100.

My little girl may be almost 8 months old, but she outgrown her first rear facing car seat since about 7 months old, and needed to move into a Group 1 front facing car seat. Our first baby car seat was a Maxi Cosi to fit onto our Quinny Zapp, and we were extremely happy with it, and so our immediate thoughts were to look to the next size of Maxi Cosi, even though there are plenty of other makes of car seat out there, many cheaper, but not necessarily as safe. Knowing that our daughter would be in this car seat for a while, we wanted to ensure we got a good one that would last, and potentially do any future children we may have, and so I started searching on amazon.
Even within the Maxi Cosi brand there are several front facing seats of group 1 size, but after reading reviews we liked the Maxi Cosi Priori XP, which costs just over the £100 mark, which isn't cheap, but I suppose you get what you pay for! We ordered the Black Reflection in this seat, as we thought it would be suitable for boy or girl if we have any future children.
Group 1 car seats like this one are suitable for babies from 9 to 18 kg. The approximate ages for this are given as 9 months to 3 years, but obviously these are estimates and as I mentioned earlier my daughter was actually in this seat at 7 months, as she is quite a big baby. It is important however that baby is sturdy in terms of holding their neck/head up before using this seat, as there obviously isn't the same support in this area as there would have been in a first car seat. However, I do think I have seen somewhere where you can purchase head rests/pillows that may support the head somewhat in this seat.
Apart from the positive reviews and name of the brand, we were also quite taken with the safety features of this car seat, in that this seat comes with a side protection system which is meant to give added safety against side impact. With the amount of cars and accidents nowadays, you can never be too careful when it comes to child safety in a car as far as I'm concerned. When we ordered this seat, we were also very impressed with the weight of it, and felt that it was heavy enough to be of good solid quality that would protect our daughter was much as possible in the case of an accident.
When it was necessary for our daughter to move into this seat, my husband was the one who fitted it. He followed the instructions which were very good and had it fitted very easily and quickly, using the three point seat belt system. It is very very sturdy in the car and doesn't move an inch, which reassures me no end. When fitting it the belts are tightened to ensure it doesn't move.
In regards to other features of the seat, there are 4 recline positions that are controlled by the one lever, and are very easy to move and work. If we are out and about and I know my daughter is due for a sleep, I can simply tilt the seat back, even with her in it, and I can even do it whilst in the front seat (obviously not when driving!) and she has always went to sleep very quickly in this position, as she seems very very comfortable when reclined.
THe other feature of this seat is the harness. As well as being height adjustable as baby grows, you can also adjust the length of straps using a little pull mechanism which again is very easily worked. There are hooks on both sides of the car seat that allow the seat belts to be held back to allow you to get baby in and out more easily without the belts getting in the way. The bottom part of the harness also has a hook so you don't have to keep reaching under baby to fish it out.
The only slight negative, and this is very very minor is that sometimes I find the belts don't stay that well hooked back and very often one might come out of the hook and get in the way, but then again maybe I am not taking enough time to hook them back properly.
All in all, we are extremely pleased with this seat, particularly in regards to its ease of fitting, as well as the safety features of this product. It is sturdy and heavy and you are reassured that your child is as safe as can be. The recline positions are also an advantage particularly if you are doing longer journey's and a baby is likely to need to sleep in the car. I would highly recommend this car seat, and certainly my daughter is very comfortable and happy in it!
I cannot express how fabulous this car seat is. OK, it may not be an isoFix, or top of the range, but it is a great, solid and safe feeling car seat.
My daughter was in this car seat from about 8 months until 3 1/2 years old and in all that time the car seat remained faithful. I only had to redo the seatbelt that strapped it in a handful of times. This was not because it had come loose but for my own peace of mind.
The car seat comes complete with a tensioner which I felt held the car seat in really well and gave it a very solid feel. I could not wiggle the car seat from side to side at all.
The covers and straps are very easy to remove and wash in the washing machine excellently.
The straps are also easy to adjust and have a few different heights which 'grow with your child.' The five point harness is very easy to use; the button is not too stiff and my daughter was not able to 'pop' open the harness as I have heard some children can do in their car seats! There are very useful hooks on the side of chair so that when you are putting your child in the seat the straps don't get in the way; you just hook them on!
You can adjust the chair in a few different positions; it actually lays quite far back and this is very useful for when your child is sleeping.
The seat is super easy to install in the car; it took me about two minutes!
All in all, a fabulous car seat that I cannot recommend to others enough!
My daughter is nearly 4 now, so just outgrowing this seat, which is useable from about 9 months old and for children from 9-18kg. I own the seat in "Black Reflection", but you will find that it is available in a number of different upholstery designs. It has a 5 point harness and has 4 recline positions and it is forward-facing.
I bought this seat primarily as it seemed to be consistently highly rated in terms of safety in all the reports I read from "Which" and the like, it gets these high ratings presumably because it has side impact protection and performed well in safety tests. This seat was £80 at time of purchase but now seems to range from £130-150, which to me is quite a major outlay. As I have used this seat nearly every day for nigh on 6 years through two children, many a supermarket run, day trip, and holiday, I hope that I can provide some insight into whether it is the right buy for you.
Fitting this seat is, on the scale of things, fairly straightforward. You need to thread the seatbelt through the back with the seat in recline position through a couple of clips - it isn't intuitive the first time you do it, but good instructions and also handy sticker reminders on the seat itself make this soon second nature. There is a tightener lever and the front too for adding tension to the belt. Though this seat isn't ISOFIX, it does fit firmly and securely and I never felt that it was less than solidly fitted into my car. If you are thinking of buying one of these I would always recommend getting the fit checked (for free) at Halfords or Mothercare.
The harness is height adjustable and should fit just above the child's shoulders - over time it is worth bearing this in mind and regularly checking as children seem to work their way through the three height positions amazingly quickly! Talking of the harness, it has nice padded protection on it for comfort for the child. I like the fact too that to adjust how tight it is you pull at the bottom of the seat, just out of child reach. This can be very handy to secure a wriggling child who doesn't want to go home! The two raised clips on the side of the seat can be used to hold back the harness whilst you put your child in the seat. From my experience there is not much chance of a smaller child pressing the fast release on the harness.
When the seat is in use another excellent feature is the recline - the position the seat can easily be changed by pressing a catch under the seat to tip the seat back - this is much better designed than the Brittax renaissance which we also used extensively. You will find you use this feature a lot if your child is prone to napping in the car. The range of recline positions is really good, in the most reclined position I always found that my children slept well, the seat goes back to just over a 45 degree angle.
I've never sat in the seat, for obvious reasons, but it does always look comfortable for both smaller and larger children, and the upholstery is well padded. We have removed the cover for cleaning, and this is fairly easy to do. The manufacturer's description does say hand wash only, but we have washed it before on the delicate cycle (sometimes the nature of children means that hand washing is just not really a possibility
) with no ill effects. I would say that the black on this seat has faded a fair bit over time, but the material is still looking good after considerable use, so overall I feel it is good quality. You can buy "Summer covers" for £19.99 to go over the seat to avoid this problem, I didn't invest in one of these but they may be a good idea.
One criticism I have of this seat in terms of the upholstery, is the way that the fabric around on the back has been fastened together. Most of the seat is stitched, however the bits on the back where the belt is height adjusted seem to be glued together rather than sewn. This means that over time they do fray a bit and come apart, this happened before we washed it, probably due to the fact that it is in direct contact with the child's back. I would have thought that they could have been made a bit more secure, bearing in mind that a new cover costs about £40-50. The rest of the seat is of an excellent build quality, and even after years of use my seat is still in absolutely perfect condition everywhere else.
This seat is fairly heavy at 9kg, if you are going to be transferring between cars. This does reflect the solid construction of the seat however, and the base which is rather heavy does mean that the child is quite raised in the car compared to some seats, and able to see that bit more out of the window.
I do think that overall this is a quality item, and for us it has been excellent. It is worthwhile shopping around to find a best price on this car seat as you will find prices really fluctuate. Safety is obviously paramount when transporting your most precious possession, and I always felt very confident using this seat which was a popular choice amongst my "baby friends" too. As I said at the start I have had several years daily and safe use of this seat and it is still going strong, or would be if my child wasn't looking a bit too big for it, even though it is an expensive item I do believe that it is worth it in the long run. Recommended.
The seat says from 9 months - 4years, I would say 3 and a half is probably more realistic. There are a number of accessories available for this seat from trays to cup holders, more details at maxicosi.com
I bought this when my son was approaching the upper weight limit for his infant seat, but actually started using it earlier than planned as it just seemed so much more secure even though it is not a rear facing seat. I still feel guilty for not researching something as important as a car seat more thoroughly before buying my son's infant seat as I was never totally happy with its secureness in the car.
I bought the Priori as it was recommended as one of the safest seats without using isofix, and I got the XP version as I didn't mind paying a little extra for the additional safety feature of the seatbelt tensioner.
The seat is really easy to fit, and can easily be moved between cars when required. The seatbelt tensioner means it fits really securely and once in does not move at all.
The seat itself is comfortable and looks great (we got the red one), it has hooks to put the straps on when not in use so you're not fiddling with them when it comes to putting your baby back in the car. The shoulder straps easily adjust in length to ease getting in and out and to accommodate different clothing.
The only problem I have with it is that the seat cover is hand wash only - it must have been designed by someone who doesn't have a baby!
I brought the Maxi Cosi Prior XP because it was on offer at Halfords and I had been recommended it by a friend. It is extremely easy to fit and even the grandparents manage it ok after showing them only once. It has fitted in four different cars with ease and my son instantly falls asleep when we take him out in the car now. It has a reclining function which is easy to reach from the front seat and you just squeeze the lever and pull the seat in one motion and the seat is reclined. It has adjustable straps for when the toddler grows and an extra safety feature where is tightens the car's seatbelt so that it is secured in position. The cover is easy to remove so you can put it in the wash. My son has been trying for months to try and undo the seat belt but has failed so far! Would recommend and will be buying another one for my baby when he is a year old.
I bought this car seat for my son when he was about 8 months old, after he'd finally outgrown his travel system car seat. I bought it from Mothercare for a very reasonable £100, since it was on sale down from £140. I have since found out that it has won a 'Mother & Baby Gold Award' for being a best travel item, so I was extra pleased.
The seat itself is a forward facing seat, although it can also be used as a rear facing seat. It has a 5 point harness, and a seat belt tensioning system for that extra secure fit. It is suitable from about 20lbs up to 40lns (approx 4 years), so hopefully it should last me a good while. It is also very nicely designed.
Mothercare ensured that the seat could fit in my Peugeot 206(which apparently are notoriously difficult to cars to find seats for), and I found the seat very easy to install. After tensioning the seat belt, the seat could not be more securely fit, it definitely makes me feel at ease knowing that it it so secure. The straps on the seat are very easy to loosen and tighten at will, and are also very secure.
I may not be a baby car expert, but I can say that I am completely satisfied with it. I have not had a single problem with it, and I have not heard a bad word said against it.
I am one happy customer!
