Oh the practicality of cream cheese!
I use it for pasta sauces, as a sandwich spread, in salads, on crackers, for desserts like cheesecake or on the side in the place of marscapone, as a dip, or to coat meat before baking.
The deliciousness is undeniable, and buying regular cream cheese in a tub often beats the prices of ricotta or mascapone cheeses with little difference in flavour - but what hinders cream cheese earning a crown? Fat.
Lightest Philadelphia (as it's known in the UK) has been somewhat of a staple in my diet since my first purchase about a year ago. I was a little dubious at first; 29 calories for 30g? Surely not. 30g is a about a tablespoon's worth and for single serve pasta dishes it's the perfect amount. It was far too good to be true. However as it turns out - it's not!
At the beginning of this review, I made a list of my favourite ways to use this spread, it's fantastic to be able to add the feeling of 'guilt-free' to it.
Those of you who are used to the taste of full fat Philadelphia, don't be too aprehensive. Since I switched to this, the taste of the full fat stuff was dreadful in comparison. It was far too thick and stuck to the insides of my throat like some claggy parasite. It was not pleasant. Though the Lightest brand is milder in flavour and not watery but less solidified than the full fat it still delivers perfectly as cream cheese. Furthermore, by accident I bought the Light Philadelphia once and hadn't realised until I was half way through the tub! Taste and texture wise I could not tell the difference between the Light and the Lightest, so why not cut out the extra calories? (unless you need them, of course).

My only qualm with the Lightest is it's gain in carbohydrates the less fat the cheese has. However, there is more protein in the lightest, which for my personal diet is what's more important.
Everybody needs different amounts of macronutrients but extra protein for less calories outweighs the downside of extra sugar. I absolutely love this product and use it on almost a daily basis. Definitely recommended.
Philadelphia cream cheese, is the cream of the crop. This soft cheese is so versatile you can use it just as a cheese spread, in baking as a topping to cakes, or in savoury dishes as a sauce. The soft cheese spread comes in regular, light and extra light, as well as having a variety of different flavours, such as garlic and cracker pepper. Philadelphia also have released a variety of different snack packs, including bread stick dips, Ritz dippers, a number of different Spendips as well as a variety of sandwiches. Admittedly I have not tried alot of these, but they always go look appealing.
I do have one criticism, although it is a small one! My best friend is a Celiac disease which means that she is allergic to gluten, found in flour and barley. She is very good at knowing exact what she can and cannot eat. She was able to eat Splendips sweet chilli snack pack however they changed the recipe for the product and did not advertise that they had done so on the packaging. This ment my friend got very very sick as a result of their error.

I have always loved Philadelphia spread and I usually get it when I go shopping if not every time usually once every two shops to make sandwiches with and to spread on other things as well.
The taste of this Philadelphia is the same as the normal full fat version, in fact you cant really taste any different in the product, and you cant see any different either as they both look the same, the only different being is the top of the tub is a different colour, light blue and it says that this is the light version of the product.
I usually have this on my sandwiches however its good to make things like cheesecake with as well as its usually an unhealthy treat, it can now be made much healthier by using this.
Now I'm not really on a diet however I do like to eat a bit healthier if and when I can and although the original one isn't exactly bad for you it is a dairy product and so can be quite fattening so that's why this one is great, costs around the same price, and so if you want to be a bit healthier or if your on a bit of a diet and trying to loose weight but still want to eat the great tasting things you would eat any way then this is the product to buy.
I always hear people telling me that they don't like 'extra light' versions of food because the flavour tastes so different; and not in a good way. I don't agree with this opinion. I tried this version of the popular soft cheese because It has 33 calories per 30g serving, which is less than half the calories in the regular Philadelphia.
This cheese is great because you can spread it in sandwiches or on bagels or ryvita. It's a great addition with extra toppings like ham or cucumber or salmon, and it still remains a healthy option. Another great use i've found is to use the cheese for baking, for example using it to make the icing for a carrot cake is so handy and using this extra light version keeps the calories lower if you're trying to cut down.
The texture of this cheese is no different to the regular philadelphia spread. However, there is a slight difference in the taste of the cheese. The milder taste in the extra light version is noticable. However, the taste of the extra light cheese is not an unpleasant taste. The flavour is just a little milder than other versions but you can still taste the cheese. I understand why some cheese lovers may not like the mild flavour though if you prefer strong cheese.

Overall I think this version of the cheese is a sensible option for anyone who may be worried about calories or fat content in the regular philidelphia. In my opinion the difference in flavour is not that noticable and I will always choose this version rather than the full fat version of the cheese in an effort to remain healthy. I really recommend you give the extra light cheese a try before dismissing the flavour like many of my peers have.
Philadelphia Extra Light is a lighter version of the low-soft cream cheese which is a market leader in the UK. There are some interesting varieties including dip tubs with breadsticks, some with chives, basil and herbs and plain Philadelphia Extra Light.
100g provides 110 calories, to be fair, you should only need around 25-30g of cream cheese for bread, crackers or on potatoes, the only time you would need more is as a topping for cheesecake or something similar.
Its actually pretty healthy as a decent dollop takes less than 3% of your daily calorie requirement.
At the moment you can buy a tub for £1.32 in Tesco for 200g, prices vary ever so slightly between stores and there are quite often offers of 2 for £2.
Philadelphia is a fairly adaptable ingredient, its perfect on top of hard bread with prawns or a lovely chutney, but is also wonderful in cheesy pasta bakes, and other dishes.
I generally buy it to use as a spread for breads, it is lighter than the fuller fat version and has a light creamy taste which combines perfectly with so many other things, from crunchy vegetables to prawns to fruity garnishes.
I also use it when making cheesecake as its the perfect ingredient and due to its cost and calorie count I don't feel too guilty using it, it tastes amazing in all manner of exotic cheesecakes however for some reason the cheese doesn't set completely meaning for a New York Cheesecake you get a lovely sloppy mess which just adds to the flavour but with more formal cheesecakes it looks untidy and I have to use original Philadelphia to really get a better quality finish.
I like this product because its flexible and the weight watchers in our family can eat it without spending the evening eating crisp breads feeling guilty, it is tasty and can be used in a wide variety of meals, its available in all large supermarkets and is pretty good value.
It has been quite a while since I dipped into Philadelphia, but when I do I am always reminded what a sheer treat it is. For those who have never had this cheese before, I will attempt to provide an insight into what is like.
Who makes it:
Kraft make it, from the same people who brought you Dairylea. This is thankfully, not as repellent as Dairylea. I like to feel Philadelphia is for a more discerning cheese critic.
For as long as I can recall, the cheese has always come in those little pots, with the removable plastic lid. You then have to peel back a thin layer of foil. The two layers keep it fresh for about two weeks.
Oh the fun you will have with spreading this stuff! Slide a knife in and it will fall gracefully into the cheese, with a gentle push of the hand you can ease into it with minimal effort. It is a soft cheese, think of the texture of Dairylea, but a little creamier. There is not the bounce you get with Dairylea or Babybel. It is not overly wet, though occasionally there might be a small liquid residue on the surface which can be annoying.
I could not tell a huge amount of difference between this and the regular variety. This one lacks the richness perhaps, but the flavour still retains the glorious creamy taste that one would expect. The cheese is mild, but the aftertaste leaves a fresh almost tart zing in the mouth, which stimulates and encourages you to have more. The good thing about Philly is that you can spread it pretty thickly without it being too sickly. I like to pile it on thick on crackers, with thin slices of cucumber.
Where To Buy:
Available from all good supermarkets, you will be looking at about £1.40 for a tub and it should last you a week or two. It is a good cheese for kids as it is not too strong and also lovely to have as a nightime snack.

I am one of the world's fussiest eaters, and have spent my life up until very recently avoiding spreadable cheese. There was just something about it that didn't feel 'normal' to me, so I steered clear. However! After discovering where I was going wrong with my diet (cheddar, in one word!) I was encouraged to switch to Philadelphia, and am very glad I did!
~*~ The range ~*~
Philadelphia extra light is the lightest version of the low-fat soft cream cheese. The Philadelphia range contains a variety of products, including original, the highest in calories (but still much better than cheddar!), varieties with herbs, chives and basil and mini tubs. Newer additions to the range are Philadelphia snacks, 'Splendips' and snack pots which are breadsticks and crackers with Philadelphia in a handy tub perfect for chucking in your bag and eating on the go.
~*~ Nutritional information ~*~
Each 30g serving contains just 33 calories, which is very good going! A 30g serving is a generous portion; I usually use half of this on a jacket potato, so the serving size isn't a wash out!
Each serving also contains just 1.4g of fat (2% of your RDA, to get a better idea) and 1g of saturated fat. Carb-wise, 30g contains 1.5g, so very good if you're trying to cut these out!
Just to compare, in a serving of 30g of cheddar cheese you will find roughly 120 calories and 10g of fat - and if you're anything like me, you would use more than 30g on a sandwich or in a dish!
~*~ Cost ~*~
£1.32 in Tesco at the moment for a 200g tub, and roughly the same in Asda. Four mini tubs (35g per tub) will cost you around £1.30. These are ideal if you are the only Philadelphia user in your house, as the larger tubs have to be eaten quite quickly. The price isn't bad, but you can get Tesco and Asda own brand light cheeses for less than half the price, and they don't taste any different in my opinion!
~*~ What do you use it with though? ~*~
I usually use Philadelphia on jacket potatoes as an alternative to cheese, and am not really too adventurous with other products. However! It can be used in a variety of different dishes, the website gives some great ideas, including cheesecake brownies, pasta dishes and with chicken. To be honest, it can be used anywhere you would use a standard block cheese to save some calories and for a bit of a change.

Philadelphia extra light is slightly blander in taste than its more fuller-fat relatives. I wouldn't recommend eating it on it's own in a sandwich, for example! However I find it makes the perfect companion to jackets - try adding some ground black pepper to make it a bit more interesting - and now actually prefer it to full fat cheese!
Added to sandwiches, this also makes a nice little extra - for example roasted vegetable, pepper and Philadelphia ciabatta, one of my favourites. As I mentioned earlier, try the website for ideas on unique Philadelphia-friendly dishes.

I have been very impressed by this version of Philadelphia. It gives something different to add to dishes as a cheddar alternative, and saves lots of calories on the way! It is a healthy way to enjoy cheese! I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking to make an extra special dish to treat yourself with, but for every day use, it's well worth trying out!
I fancied something different on my bread this week and decided on Philadelphia, but as I often do nowadays I went for the healthiest option - the extra light. This is the first time I have purchased this.
Philadelphia is now sold in oval "stay fresh packs", though in the small print on the base of the tub it does also say to enjoy this product at its best consume within one week of opening. I'm fairly sure the old tubs of Philadelphia remained okay for at least a week after opening so I'm not too sure what extra this pack gives you - and the lid isn't a very tight fit.
The Philadelphis Extra Light looks much the same as the other plain Philadelphias when you open the tub. There is a very faint cheesy yoghurty aroma coming off the spread.
I decided to try this on a slice of fresh, crusty bread. On first tasting it I was pleased with the coolness of the product, not too bad in this warm weather. But then I realised there was something missing. This soft cheese did not appear to taste of cheese. I sampled the Philadelphia straight from the tub and it tasted like very thick natural yoghurt, not at all like cheese, nowhere near the taste of Philadelphia or even Philadelphia Light. It's not unpleasant tasting on bread, it just doesn't taste of cheese which is why I bought it.
This might be quite nice as something to dip celery in (or possibly serve mixed with fruit), but I wouldn't recommend stirring it into pasta as a cheesy sauce unless you want pasta with a yoghurty sauce.
On a positive note this is a good product for the health conscious who are willing to sacrifice flavour to save calories, with only 33 cals and 1g of sat fat per 30g serving - about one sixth of the tub - and this is why it gets a second star.
A 200g tub of Philadelphia Extra will cost about £1.40 in supermarkets and it is also available in 300g tubs.
Think in future I will stick to Philadelphia Light and save calories elsewhere.
Being on the weight watchers plan I am forever trying to find ways to reduce my points intake on old favourites and find new and interesting things to snack on during the day. Cream cheese is one item I do miss but then Philadelphia introduced the 'extra light' version to their range.
Available in either a 200g tub for around £1.30 or a set of 4 x 35g mini tubs for around the same price, this variety has a lot less saturated fat in it with only 1.1g per 35g serving (or mini tub) compared with 4.1g in the same amount of the full fat variety.
I use this for all sorts of things on my weight watchers plan, per mini tub there is only 38calories and this means that each tub represents 1 point and for convenience I do tend to buy these rather than one of the bigger single tubs, I like the fact the product stays fresh, I know exactly how many points I am eating and they are small enough to fit in my luchbox easily. I spread it on multiseed Ryvita when I know I need to have a filling but very low point lunch, to my mind it does not taste much different to the full fat version.
I also do use a spoonful of this extra light Philadelphia to stir through pasta dishes and it lends them the same kind of creamyness as the full fat version does, its very tasty on bagels where again I cannot tell the difference based on taste. When spreading it it does seem less thick than the full fat version and it feels a little more watery, but I honestly cannot tell the difference based on taste alone.
One thing that the extra light version does not work well at all for is cheesecake. I have tried and it simply will not set which must be something to do with the difference in texture and thickness. I have found that if I want to use this for cheesecake I have to add gelatine to make it set, however, I usually just use full fat for cheesecakes and to hell with the diet!
As an aid to my diet I do love this product, its very adaptable, tasty and so low in fat that I know I can indulge without blowing the days points. The mini tubs in particular are convenient and I wish the supermarkets own brands would cotton on to that. I would highly recommend this product to anyone watching their weight as to my mind the difference in taste between full fat and extra light is hardly noticable.
It is hard to think of a more versatile cream cheese that tastes so creamy and sinful than that produced by Philadelphia Extra Light Cream Cheese, you could almoth argue that it is actually good for you. None of the flavour has been lost in reducing the fat content of this cheese only the extra calories. It is so versatile that I use it in hot and cold dishes as it is equally as good just spread onto celery and munched or added to mash potatoe or used to thicken soup. I have even used it when making curry dishes to thicken the sauce and have had compliments on how good it tastes. The only problem is that because you know it is extra light, I tend to eat more than I would normally and the foods I put it with are perhaps not necessarily extra light too. As I say, it's sinful!
I was very interested to see on the T.V that Philadelphia tubs were changing. I eagerly bought a new oval shaped tub and brought it home only to find that they'd merely changed the rectangle tub to an oval and stuck a grey lid on it instead. Why did I get sucked in?
I thought the whole point was that it kept for longer but as the back of the pack says it still recommends keeping only for 1 week as before.
On to the taste - Its got the slightly sour taste of soft cheese which is nice but its a bit weak tasting and I definately prefer the taste of the full fat one. Its a bit nothingy and just makes you think you're eating cheap soft cheese but not the creamy taste you want from proper Philadelphia.
I would definately forget the calorie counting and go for the full fat version next time. Just eat less of it!
As a long time lover of Philadelphia cream cheese I was none too impressed when I visited a friend's a while back and tried the light version of it on a few crackers.
She always eats the light version to avoid the dreaded weight gain but for me cream cheese has to be full fat.
I visited this friend again over the festive period and after a few red wines we once again indulged in some crackers and Philadelphia cream cheese but this time I really could not eat them.
This time instead of just the somewhat horrid light she had moved on to the completely vile extra light version of the cheese.
The extra light version of this normally great cheese has lost a lot of its creaminess as well as almost all of its taste leaving it like nothing more than a sticky white blob on the cracker and to be honest the dry crackers would have been preferable.
I know we should all watch our weight and cut down our fat intake but cream cheese just has to be full fat or there is no point in eating it at all.
A 30g serving of Philadelphia Extra Light, contains only 33kcal and 1.4g of fat which is of course a good thing and certainly much less than what the original contains but the severe lack of taste makes it inedible for me I am afraid and certainly not a product I would recommend.
How I got into Philadelphia
Philadelphia seems to be a product that iv been using for ages now. In fact I cant even remember the first time I tried it as it must have been quite a while ago. I don't actually think that the extra light version tastes any different to the normal full fat version of Philadelphia so the reason I buy the extra light version is simply because its not as fattening as the full fat version.
What is Philadelphia
Philadelphia is a soft cream cheese made by the food company Kraft.
The Kraft company is one of the most famous brands for food in the world making several hundred different products for the market targeting several countries across the world. They are also the leading selling company for soft cheese in the world making Philadelphia the number one soft cheese out there.
The normal Philadelphia has always been the most popular and has been around for ages now, though this relatively new extra light version was first released in 2001 and boasted having less than 5% fat. This however wasn't too popular, and in fact I didn't even notice they were selling this at all until the recipe was changed to make it taste nicer, like the original but still have less than 5% fat. This new version was released in 2006 and with marketing campaigns I soon heard about this new Philadelphia extra light and the first time I saw it, I bought it. Probably not because id seen the adverts for it but because I would have bought the normal full fat edition anyway, then I saw this and bought it as I saw it was healthier.
Now when it comes to the packaging of products I'm not really too fussy. As long as its easy to open and easy to use then I'm usually happy. This extra light version comes in the same packaging as all the other Philadelphia's. There is of course the extra light in writing clearly on the foil of the packaging to the product so its easy to tell all the Philadelphia's apart. Also on the front foil part of the pack is your GDA's clearly stated. These are your guideline daily amounts and show you how much a typical sized portion of Philadelphia makes up of your guideline daily amount. The Philadelphia itself comes in a quite compact little plastic tub. The plastic tub itself is quite unique and looks a little different to most butter and margarine tubs, firstly it's a little flatter as most butter tubs are higher up than Philadelphia tubs are, also it has a completely different top as you don't see much margarine tubs with clear plastic tops. The see through plastic lid is easily taken off and put back on and is a design feature specifically linked to Philadelphia, this is good as its easy to tell this product to other products that come in similar tubs. A downside to its lid however is if you remove the foil top of the plastic tub then you cant tell what this product is easily by looking at the top of it. The foil lid that preserves the Philadelphia until its opened contains all the design of the product and protects it for about 6 months of shelf life.
As soon as the Philadelphia is opened it will last about a week if kept refrigerated and the clear plastic lid kept on the Philadelphia tub.
Philadelphia extra light in my opinion tastes exactly the same as the normal full fat version of Philadelphia. The taste of its quite hard to explain, it doesn't't really taste like cheese, and it doesn't't taste like cream. Its kind of a pleasant light creamy cheese taste and isn't at all sickly like most creams and cheeses. Its quite a light tasting product and you can put it on sparingly and get a nice taste or you can put lots on and get a strong but yet still not sickly taste of cream cheese, which is strange as if you have a cheese sandwich with loads of cheese then its really sickly but with Philadelphia this just isn't the case.
I really like the smell of Philadelphia light, mainly because it doesn't't have much of one. I don't really like the smell of cheeses and most other cream cheese products however I do like the taste. The smell of Philadelphia light however is actually really nice, it doesn't't have a strong horrible smell to it like you'd probably expect but instead has a nice light creamy kind of smell to it which instead of putting you off the product actually lures you into wanting to eat it. Unless you actually get in there and smell it however the product doesn't't really smell of anything at all, I think this is a really good thing though.
Simply because some other cheese spreads iv used in the past have smelt horrible as soon as iv opened then and in some cases they have even put me off eating them.
The best thing about Philadelphia light must be its texture, its just so simple to use because its so light and creamy. Because the texture is so soft, even when refrigerated its still so easy to spread, its not however too runny and is still really thick as well as being extremely easy to spread. I think that they have definitely got the texture to the highest standard and the best they could have possibly made it.
It really is so easy to use, you can easily spread it on almost anything, as well as easy mix it into anything without having to heat it up to get it to a runnier texture. You can even dip foods into it too, like bread sticks and Doritos are also great to have with Philadelphia light as well as many other foods too.
What can you do with Philadelphia?
Well there's actually quite a lot you can do with Philadelphia, apart from just putting it on some bread and dipping things in you can also cook with it too.
In fact if you visit the Kraft Philadelphia website you'll find a whole load of recipes there for you to make with Philadelphia. There's a whole lot of starters you can make with Philadelphia, but the best things you can make with Philadelphia must be the desserts. The main desserts you can make with Philadelphia revolve around different cheesecakes.
Here's the recipe for a white chocolate cheesecake.
100g digestive biscuits.
75g caster sugar.
1 tea spoon grated lemon rind.
1 tea spoon gelatine.
100g white chocolate.
Put the biscuits in a food bag, or wrap them up in Clingfilm and roll out with a rolling pin until you have a nice bag of crumbs, this is what makes the base of your cheesecake.
Mix the sugar, Philadelphia, lemon rind and gelatine until smooth. Then fold in the cream until a nice smooth but thick mixture has formed.
Mix the crumbs prepared earlier with the 25g of butter. Then put them into a greased tin. The appropriate size would be about a 10 cm tin.
Put the filling into the base, then refrigerate this for at least three hours until set. If you want to you can put fruit or even chocolate on top, and if you want to put fruit into the cheesecake then you fold it in at the same time as the cream.
This white chocolate is one of my favourite desserts to make with Philadelphia, and you can make it with both normal and extra light Philadelphia too. My absolute favourite dessert to make is a kind of cheesecake brownie which is not only easy to make but also tastes great every time. Here's how to make it.
125g dark chocolate. (or cooking chocolate).
200g brown sugar.
50g cocoa powder.
50g plain flour.
1/2 teaspoon baking powder.
50g caster sugar.
Make sure the chocolate is broken up into small chunks. Add the butter and the brown sugar and stir them in a saucepan on medium heat until the chocolate and butter have melted and there's a nice smooth mixture in the pan.
Take this away from the heat and whisk in the three eggs.
Then add the flour, the cocoa and the baking powder and stir until there all combined without any lumps in there. You can always use an electric whisker is you need to.
Grease a tin, and line with grease proof paper if you have any. Its best to use a rectangular tin however if you want you can always use a circular tin.
Pour the chocolaty mixture into the tin and spread it out so its evenly mixed.
Beat the Philadelphia and caster sugar together until its smooth. Then spoon over the chocolate mixture already in the tin, mix some into the mixture too using a fork or a knife. Remember your trying to create a marble type pattern so the batter you mix it in before it cooks the better it will come out.
Bake at 1800ºC, gas mark 4, for about 40 minutes or just until cooked. As soon as its cooked you can take it out and start serving it, although you may want to wait until its cooled a little before serving this delicious treat.

Common questions about Philadelphia.
The first must be is it suitable for vegetarians?
The answer to this is yes, however its not suitable for vegans as it contains milk.
Can pregnant women eat it?
Yes they can, Philadelphia is pasteurised, and as women are not meant to eat un pasteurised cheeses then Philadelphia is fine for pregnant women.
What about allergies?
If you are unable to eat nuts, wheat, Soya or egg products then don't worry as Philadelphia doesn't contain any of these.
Whys there water on top of my Philadelphia?
At first I actually thought it meant it was out of date, and I threw a whole pack away once because of that reason, however it is completely healthy. it's the separation of liquid and the cheese and this water can either be mixed back into the cheese or just tipped off if you don't want to mix it in.
How is it made?
First of all, the milk is tested purity, after that it's pasteurised to kill any harmful micro-organisms, then homogenised by squeezing it through tiny holes to make sure all the fat is evenly distributed. The milk is then cooled. The milk is then slightly warmed so bacteria starts to grow on it.
Another starter culture is added to act on the natural sugar that is present in the milk and turn it into an acid. As the amount of this lactic acid slowly increases, the milk gradually curdles to form a soft curd consistency. In the production of some cheese like Philadelphia, the soft curd is cut to separate the whey from the curds. The cheese is then also heated or 'scalded' to develop the texture.

Well its no secret, I really like Philadelphia extra light and not only is it so easy to use but it can be used for some much things too. Also its really easy to find and you can buy Philadelphia almost anywhere.
Its not too expensive either and the average price for a tub is just £1.33. You'll probably find it cheaper if you look around too and I usually buy mine for less than £1. It also lasts for many servings too and it also tastes so nice. So altogether it's a great product which you can use as a snack, to go with a whole main course or even make desserts out of and you cant say that about much other foods.
So if you've not tried this yet I urge you too, its really nice and it wont change those scales if you are on a diet.
I always have a tub of Philadelphia in my refrigerator, but these days as I'm trying to watch the waistline, I have been buying the extra light cream cheese instead.
The good news is that a 30g serving only contains 33kcal, so you can indulge without feeling too guilty, and doing too much damage to the waistline!
The taste in my opinion is not much different form the full fat one. Its still as creamy and yummy! My other half swears he doesnt like the extra light, because it doesnt taste as good as the standard full fat variety, but I have given it to him before, without him knowing, and he ate it with relish....all in the mind of you ask me!
It can be used for a variety of things. Great on crusty rolls, with salmon, or as a base for a healthier pasta sauce.
The only problem I have found is that it tends to go off very quickly, and I ahve opened it to find a green colony growing in the tub before, so my advice is to use ut as soon as you open it.
I remember about 15 years ago or so, we were subjected to those ads on the TV telling us to go and buy Philadelphia cream cheese because it was light. 'Philadelphia!' squeaked the blonde actress on the TV, in an innocent but not entirely convincing voice. Back then, I wasn't responsible for the shopping, I was still at school and eating whatever mum and dad bought. Now I have my own household to feed, I make the choices when I go shopping, and every now and then I get some Phildaelphia extra light cream cheese. Not, you understand, because of the ad that has annoyingly stuck in my head for years, but because it's lovely!
Philadelphia extra light cream cheese comes in a small 200ml tub, rectangular and with a plastic see-through lid. Although the cheese will have a use by date, it's worth knowing that once you open it you only have a few recommended days to use it before it starts to deteriorate in quality and go off. For this reason, I buy the smaller 200ml tub, which will cost anywhere between £1.30 and £1.50 depending on where you buy it.
This particular type of Philadelphia has only been with us since 2001. Before that, you couldn't get the Extra Light version, and it was modified in 2003 to give a better taste, the first attempt being a bit bland. They also do ranges with extra flavours in, and I often like the Philadelphia Extra Light with Chives. It just gives that extra little little aftertaste to it.
I recommend Philadelphia Extra Light Cream Cheese. I particularly like it on a bagel wth some smoked salmon (heavenly). The creaminess of it makes it spreadable without being runny, resulting in a thick paste as opposed to cream or cheese. I guess its consistency literally is a mix of the two. This product isn't the cheapest for the amount you get, but it's worth getting every now and then as a treat.
