“ Brand: Leskol / Type: Cheeses „
I love to have a bit of mature cheddar cheese now and again, especially in a sandwich or with a nice jacket potato. However I am currently trying to lose weight and full fat cheese can definitely put a bit of a dampener on that. So I have been looking around for low fat varieties. Having tried the Weight Watchers Mature Cheddar and been deeply disappointed by its plasticky texture and lack of taste, I didn't hold out too much hope for my next attempt, but I was very surprised and pleased with Leskol Half Fat Mature White Cheddar. This cheese costs £1.87 from Asda for a 200 gram packet which is around average for cheese. I have seen it on offer recently at 2 for £3 so if you like a bargain then wait around for a bit and stock up when this comes around again. The cheese comes in a deep red packet which reminds me a bit of Cathedral City cheese, which is a good thing as I love that brand! The packet is resealable which I have found really useful as it definitely increases the length of time that this cheese will keep well in the fridge. I've found the cheese to be fine for around three weeks in this packet once opened which is impressive. The packaging describes the cheese as 'A REDUCED CHOLESTEROL, HALF FAT CHEESE ALTERNATIVE. MADE IN SOMERSET WITH SKIMMED MILK AND VEGETABLE OIL. MADE ON OUR FARM SINCE 1902.' The nutritional information is also on the packet and is very exciting (well, to me anyway) as it shows that for each 30 gram serving of cheese, you will consume just 84 calories, 5 grams of fat and a staggeringly low 0.39 grams of saturated fat. The sodium is also low at only 0.15 grams. I couldn't believe how low these values were in comparison to ordinary cheese, and even when compared with the Weight Watchers version I found that although the calories were slightly higher, the saturated fat in Leskol was much, much lower. These nutritional values made me worry about how the cheese might taste. Surely with so little fat it would be horrible? Well, no, it's actually really nice. At first I was skeptical as it had a slightly sweaty texture when I took it out of the packet, and there are quite a few little white calcified bits on it, but this doesn't matter as once it's cut or grated the cheese just tastes lovely. It has a nice strong, distinctive flavour like extra mature cheddar and it really adds something special to a sandwich or potato. You hardly lose out in taste at all with this cheese, and it's a great way to keep your weight and cholesterol down without making much of a sacrifice. I will be buying it regularly from now on and I'm really pleased to have discovered it!
