not the same as the original but better for the waistline!

My 8 year old son recently went off of chedder cheese but after a trip down to his nanny and grandad's, he came back professing his love of cheese with holes in it! On my next shopping trip I located this continental Leerdammer sliced cheese and promptly put it in my trolley, happy that I could keep the calcium going in his diet. It wasn't until after he had consumed some that he stated that it looked the same as nanny's cheese but didn't taste quite the same and after consulting my mother realised that we had bought the same make of cheese but the pack I had purchased was the Lightlife variant (which has 39% less fat than the ordinary Leerdammer slices as well as 50% less fat than cheddar). Out of the mouths of babes they say - just goes to show that there is a real taste difference between the original and low fat alternatives! Luckily though he liked this type too! The cheese comes in a really handy recyclable plastic pack which rather than peeling off and then trying to reseal the lid (which invariably never shuts tight enough to maintain freshness, this has a plastic (reversed) lid in that it sits down into the packet making resealing a breeze with no need to cover in clingfilm which is usually what I end up doing with the other so called resealable packs! The slices of cheese are a good size and fairly thin with around 4 or 5 fairly large holes in them. They are a little strangely shaped in that they have two straightish sides that create a right-angle and the other two sides are curved but they are of an adequate size to virtually cover a whole slice of bread when making sandwiches. I myself don't favour this type of cheese as it is too mild for my taste. To me the consistency and feel of the cheese is also slightly rubbery although the slices are so thin and floppy that this counteracts this a little more than other similar cheeses I have tried. The taste is very mild indeed and there is a very slight nutty flavour (you have to concentrate hard to pick this up though)! For a mild cheese, these do leave quite an unplesant aftertaste for a short period of time after eating which I was not fond of. I also like my cheese to be quite strong in flavour but I can see why these would be a hit with children due to the sweetness and mildness of the cheese as well as the fun of the holes!. These are great for a quick snack with crackers or as a filling for sandwiches. There are 8 slices in the pack and this is a natural cheese which is rich in calcium. The reduced fat content make this a good option for those who like their cheese a little bit to much and are conscious of their waistlines. 100g (four slices) contain 280 cals, 17g of fat and 1010mg of calcium. In conclusion, I would recommend this cheese for children or dieters but not to cheese lovers on the whole. I have not tasted the original Leerdammer - perhaps that would go down better with me! This pack costs £1.99 from Tescos. Thank for you reading! x also on ciao
