I have owned one of these for the last two and a half years. It does approximately 34 mpg (which is very good for the size of engine) and has been rock solid reliability wise. There is plenty of power in the higher rev range (which is very useful for overtaking on the motorway). The car now has 158,000 miles on it. A very nice reliable car to own.
OK before I start I have to say that I am a Vauxhall fan and so far have owned 5 of them. Albeit older models. I have to say that this is the absolute worst car I have ever had the misfortune to drive. I turned up at the rental office expecting a Ford Focus. My heart sank a bit when I was given the keys to the Vectra but I thought that the last one I had driven (a T reg 1.8 LS) may have just been a bad one. Plus this one looked nice seeing as it was a dark blue SRi with nice looking alloy wheels and a neat boot spoiler. Got in and straight away I knew it was a mistake. The seat was horrendously uncomfortable. I managed to adjust it so that the bottom of the base wasn't digging into my back too much but was glad I was only doing a 160 mile round trip. It didn't improve no matter how much adjusting I did on the way there and back. I started the car up and set off, remebering to rev the car to pull away to avoid an embarassing stalling incident! The suspension was very firm and the 16" alloy wheels didn't help crashing and thumping over every bump. However the trade off was very good and flat cornering. The inside isn't very much different to the normal Vectra, the dials were surrounded by a metallicgrey finish rather than black and the uncomfortable seats were half leather sports ones. On the plus side the dials are very reasy to read as is the big display for the radio, clock, external temperature display and trip computer on this model. The radio was reasonable although it took me a while to work out that just pressing the seek buttons scrolled me through the preset stations and a longer press was required to do a full seek. The door mirrors were dreadful, they are too small to start with, even more so with the blind spot section on the drivers mirror. After all my moaning I do have to say that the engine is fantastic, very smooth, very powerful and happy to rev
right up to the red line. I found that out after being stuck behind a van doing 20mph on the slip road joining a motorway!! However the biggest disappointment was the gearbox, let me just mention that the car had done just over 6000 miles. Everything was fine when the car was cold. However once it had warmed up it would not go into 4th gear without crunching. At first I thought it was me, I was over revving it or not putting the clutch right to the floor, but no it was the car. Every time I changed up into 4th it crunched, in the end I started missing out 4th and going straight into 5th. The last thing I wanted was to destroy a gearbox. To sum up it's a great engine in a very poor car. I hope the new one is better but I don't intend to drive one to find out!
