I first bought my Vauxhall Vectra in November last year. I was a little cautious about buying a car with such a big engine as I am still only young and had been driving a ford fiesta for the previous 3 years. Unfortunately, my fiesta died and so it needed replacing as soon as possible. A family friend told me about this car, I went to see it and fell in love straight away. I was lucky enough to get it at a bargain of £800. The best thing was that it was a diesel! Surprisingly the insurance isn't too high and its a very nippy car. I definately felt the difference after driving a ford fiesta. I also get around 500 or so miles to a full tank which is quite respectful of a 2 litre turbo diesel. I have had the car for 5 months or so and it was the best decision I ever made, I can even fit people in the back of my car now. Which makes it a lot better when we go out with our friends and I'm playing Taxi driver. The engine management light does come on quite often but nothing has fallen off it yet which is always a good thing
I've bought my Vectra 2.0 DTI Elite trim 6 months ago second hand. It is 03 registration for 6000 pounds from a trader. The options were either to get the Ford Focus or the Vectra. Been Vectra driver for last 8 years I've got the Vectra. I know the Focus is more agile, but after short test drive it proved what I already know - the bigger the car the better the cruising. I have relaxed drive style and the Vectra is my perfect value for money match. Basically 2.0 and 2.2 DTI engines have bad reputation for oil burning. Not mine though after two regular oil changes I can tell you that there was no need to add any oil between them whatsoever maybe I am just lucky, maybe because my revs hardly goes more then 2500. No faults to fix either so far. Anyway if you do not want to visit your local garage just do not push it to the limit. I enjoy driving and the Vectra comfort inside is the best of the class. Maybe because the trim is Elite, but believe me I feel myself much more pampered then in 3 BMW or C class. And the VW Passat may looks like big car outside, but inside is no match for the Vectra. Ive tested Passat as well and it is just too small inside for me I am 185cm toll and definitely need roomy car. You can adjust it exactly as you need, but then again this is an Elite trim and the driver seat had all possible adjustments. It is a heavy car though for 2.0 engine. My last Vectra A 1.7 tdi was much more agile. Nevertheless if you push it can do on a motorway fine and on small roads I dont think is reasonable to do more then speed limit anyway. If you want a race just go to the racetrack. The only disadvantage is that the car front is ugly. But again when you are inside the car you feel very comfortable, and as far I am concern outside look is something I do not care. What I care is to feel good inside. And the drive for my style of driving is just perfect. Not to mention that I usually do 700 miles per tank. This is nice because I prefer spending my money on something else then petrol. So I do not think that there is another car model in this class that can beat Vectra Elite trim in value for money. The car new was 16000 pounds I bought for 6000 with 70000 miles on the clock. So I paid exactly 37.5% of the price compared to new one. Only driving annoyance for me is the 3rd gear - not exactly smooth. One advice mine is manual, but do get auto if you intend to drive in London. I do not drive usually in London, but few drives there was really nightmare with manual. But this is valid for nay car model anyway.
The last series of Topgear produced endless amounts of insults thrown at any of the Vauxhall range and mainly the Vectra's. Why?? You may ask, well hopefully this report will give you some idea. I have now had this Vectra 2.0 as a company car for the past year, and was brand new from the leasing company when received. I know that your views may suddenly after knowing that I am writing this review from a company car drivers perspective. But taking into consideration that I have done nearly 45,000 miles in the last year, I should be half a decent judge on this product regardless of my driving style. First impressions? when starting the Vectra is the unbelievable amount of noise that the engine produces. And yes, I do expect there to be some noise considering that it is a diesel, but would you blame me for mentioning this if I said it sounds like a black cab or a London bus??. Appearance inside is very bland with standard boring plastic dashboards and hardback seats that don't really fit any body. There are no real gimmicks or surprises in store once you have looked around briefly, except that the audio system is pretty decent. Nothing seems to have been positioned in respect of someone under 6ft tall, with the drinks holder in between driver and passenger awkwardly pushed to far back so you have to lean to rest your arm, or the steering column which you can never get in it's ideal position. OK, I don't mind giving it some credit for its physical appearance other than its the same old Vectra, just a bit squarer. I would like to suggest that if anything was to put you off this car, it won't be the internal/external appearance, but the drive and reliability. As mentioned, I have done around 45,000 miles so far, and during this period it has been in the garage five times for faults, and twice for its service. The faults in order have been: 1: Power Steering Fluid Leak (Caused car not to turn whilst doing 50mph on slip road from motorway) 2: 4 Weeks later, the same Power Steering Fluid Leak re-occurred. 3: Throttle barrel had broke causing engine to run, but no power. 4: Engine Flooded (have no idea as to why) 5: Onboard computer management failed (again, no idea as to why) Let me also say that I know nearly 30 other people with Vectra?s from our fleet and I would say that 80% of them have been in the garage for problems within the first year. Other than the faults, the drive can be of a various performance depending on the cars usage. Motorway driving, the Vectra can out pull quite a few cars from a standstill, but due to serious lag on the turbo, opponents will always edge ahead before you kick in. 2nd and 3rd gears are a dream, and have a lot of power behind them for getting away from trailing cars. But then this leads on to the last two gear's, 4th and 5th are really only there to keep you car accelerating (but not at any great urgency). Town driving is generally more exciting than motorways as you are really only using the first 3 gears (most powerful), but due to a stiff suspension it defiantly isn't the most comfortable but at least the power steering is a treat, which allows you to handle even the most hazardous environments with ease. With the cars 60ltr tank, you could expect on average around 500miles per tank. But take note, that oil consumption within any diesels is far greater than petrol. And in a diesel Vectra, it is even worse. For every 1000 miles you drive you will find that your oil is well below minimum and needs topping up. I could easily rabbit on about faults with this car but it is unfair due to my expectations. To some people, this car may be a gem and a very practical car.. Everyone has their own opinion.!!
