My wife and I bought this car as something to get her to and from work. We were looking for a new one rather than a used one, something that was good value for money but was a substantial size rather than a "city car".
We came across the Skoda Felicia which was about to be discontinued and replaced by the Fabia. We were attracted to it not only because it was only £6,000 for a new car (in 2000)but also because it came with a three year warranty, and was a full size five door hatchback with a reasonable amount of interior and boot space. We had also read that Skoda now had a reputation for making good quality (if not fashionable) cars.
Five years on, and we still have this car with no intentions of getting rid of it, for the following reasons:
It's extremely reliable. It has never once let us down.
It's extremely well built. The doors are really heavy and close with a reassuring clunk. All the interior trim is of good quality and the controls nicely weighted.
It has plenty of room. You can easily fit five people and a good amount of luggage in it.
It's cheap to run. It qualifies for the £110 tax rate, uses very little petrol (circa 37-40 mpg) costs less than £150 a year to service and costs less than £200 a year for insurance (for both my wife and I).
When a car provides this much value for money and quality it's very hard to part with it!!
Obviously the car is now discontinued so you'll have to buy a used one if interested. Expect to pay up to £3,000 for a good late model one from a main dealer, which is a good indication of how low the depreciation is on these cars!
To drive, this car is a lot better than you'd think. The engine is extremely responsive given it's only a 1.3, and the car is happy to cruise at 70 on the motorway all day with plenty in reserve. The only thing you'll have to get used to is the fact that because the engine is an old overhead valve unit, it does sound like a sewing machine! The only other point is that in really hot weather the ventilation fan struggles to keep you really cool - so an open window is called for.
The only point I'd be careful about is for the basic model (which we have) there's very little equipment - no airbag, no air conditioning, no sunroof, no CD player, no electric windows, no power steering. The last point is important. If you can find one with PAS, get it because without it the steering is incredibly heavy. Our view of this was it's just less to go wrong, so we're happy to live without these features!
So to sum up, if you're looking for a good value family sized hatchback, you could do a lot worse than the Skoda Felicia. And for those who have concerns about the badge remember the fact we discovered after buying our Skoda - in essence you're getting everything that's good about a VW - without having to pay VW prices!!
My family have driven Skoda's for years. I'm 21 years old. It's not exactly the sort of car I'd be seen dead in, but it was a present. That said I have a Felicia Lxi R-Reg 1997. It's basic, but very, very reliable. Yeah its a Skoda, and yes I have been the butt of some jokes but at the end of the day I use it to get from a to b and I get there. Earlier in the year when we had the really bad snow (I'm fom Essex) guess who got to work for the 20 miles+? Yep, me. The Skoda and I got there, it starts first time every time and the only problems I have ever had with it are punctures, which can happen to any car. Like I said before it was a present, one which to be honest I was a bit gutted about. Someone my age should be driving souped up Escorts or Fiestas. But I am not in debt, I drive a car that is comfortable to drive and does exactly what I need it for. Fuel efficiency is great, I can get to work all week - thats a 20 mile day trip (there and back) on a full tank which to fill from empty is about £20 if not less. I don't know the mpg or anything like that, all I know is that its cheap to run. The dealer where I got it from is someone we go to all the time, so we do get treated very well. If something goes wrong - like I said before nothing has, then its fixed on the spot. I have had a few other things like the bulbs going and things like that, but nothing wrong mechanically. It's a tough little car. Easy to maintain, a full service sets me back around £120 which is very competitive and when I got it (used) it had done about 30k miles. I now have done about 55k with no problems. Passes the MOT first time every time. Pro's It gets you where you want to go. Mechanically very good. (think VW) Cheap to run Insurance is very cheap - for me a 21 year old it was £300 fully comp. For me to own another car like a Fiesta or a Escort to go fully comp is more like £7
00!! Lets face it, no-ones going to nick it! Dealers (mine) are excellent, advice is all free, got 2 years free services on it (and that was a used one!) and a years AA which is standard these days. Everything works unlike some cars that fail every now and then. Con's Image - I do feel a little embarrassed sometimes, but thats because of my age. This is no problem if you don't care about that sort of thing. Interior - okay I am being picky now, its very basic no e/w or anything like that, but you dont buy a Skoda for that. Resale - trying to sell one privately can be difficult. At the end of the day if you want a cheap to run, reliable car to get the kids or shopping then go for this one. If you are after street credibility then this is not for you. For me, street cred is not really all that important, I've driven past people at the side of the road in their souped up cars that have broken down and laugh to myself. Summary Great car, nothing flashy. Won't cost you an arm and a leg to run or insure, but you won't exactly be Mr/Mrs Cool in this car. I have the older shape ones, the newer ones with the grilles are alot better looking, but if your on a budget this is the one for you.
Having had an Audi 80 previously I never dreamed of owning a Skoda.I inherited my first Skoda from my father a Favorit, I must admit I was scared to be seen in it at first knowing that street cred for these little cars was nill. The experience of driving this Favorit, now our second car of two, was not amazingly good but I was intreagued enough to look at the Felicia when it came out and ended up buying one. My sister owns an Octavia which looks and sounds like something else it reminds me of a Vauxall carlton, my brother has a felicia and we are all pleased with the costs of running these motors. The reliability seems good although I did have trouble with the head gasket on the Favorit they tell me it's something to do with the head being Aluminium based. The only thing I seem to need for this Felicia is air for the tyres, petrol occasionally and a drop of oil now and then. Incidently this one uses some oil but the Favorit used no oil at all between services. I had a comment from a friend that he didn't realise the Skodas had an air bag and central locking and an engine imobiliser, I nearly asked him if he thought they had steering wheels and a hand brake as well!!I will say if you are looking for a reliable form of cheap motoring choose a Skoda and don't worry about the jokes they will wear off in another year or two. I am thinking of trading mine for a newer model although a Octavia is out of my budget I might be tempted to buy a new Fabia.
I am about to come to the end of a years, virtually, trouble free motoring after purchasing a ‘P’ reg Skoda Felica Gli last summer. After being given £3,000 to spend ‘on a car’ (yes lucky me!) and looking around the local dealers etc for a something new looking, (as to me that is a lot of money to spend on a second hand vehicle). I was drawn to the little local Skoda dealership, which I passed every day on the way to take the kids to school. “They’re not bad looking little cars” we had always used to say, looking at the modern looking VW lookalikes with their smart new style Skoda badges. Most with one elderly owner with full service histories (really!) A short test drive confirmed what I had always thought. Although a little under powered they are a pleasure to drive with plenty a room inside for a small car. For the price you do not get luxury, unless like me you would normally spend £800 max on a car and then central locking; sun roof; decent stereo cassette player and interior trim that would match any car in it’s class, is luxury. Having traded in a Mkll Astra Estate I was a bit concerned about boot space etc being a keen DIYer. Obviously a hatchback is going to be have trouble competing with an estate but with the back seats removed you have the space of a small van. Even for a quick trip to the DIY shop is accommodated by the split rear seats and I have had 2 kids and five 6’ planks of wood in the car at the same time. As I said at the beginning it has been virtually trouble free. Not being used to the fuel injection system I tended to press the accelerator when restarting after a stall, which resulted in a few times sitting for 10-15 minutes in a dead Skoda the height of embarrassment. Obviously my tip would be don’t. Leave it a few seconds then turn it over without touching the accelerator. I have had no more trouble. Other than spending
£40 on a 6-month service it has not cost me any more than the normal running costs. I have no immediate plans to change my car but my next one will definitely be a Skoda.
Skoda's ever improving Felicia range has taken another step forward, this time sporting a longer, fresher faced body with a revised interior, badging and colours. It's available as a five-door hatch or estate in two trim levels, LX and the better equipped GLX, with 3 engines - a 1.3 litre with 54 or 68bhp, a 1.6 litre and a 1.9 diesel. On the road prices should start at under £7000, rising to around £11500 for the top of the range GLX estate. Compared to the all new Octavia, the Felicia still feels a little old-fashioned. The thin rim steering wheel should be chunkier, the ride is bouncy and the front wheel drive chasis is hardly inspirational. However, it is a pleasant enough car to drive and few could argue with it's good value for money. This is the ideal little run around for a student or someone of a low income. It provides good fuel economy and isn't too expensive to buy, with the option of monthly payments and free insurance for the first year.
Forget all the jokes, this car can get you from a to b comfortably, safely and ..... cheaply. Sure, it won't go as quickly as a Porsche, it won't go as smoothly as a Mercedes and it won't handle as well as a BMW, but for a no nonsense, no frills , reliable ride it's impossible to beat. It might not impress your friends, but as a car that offers low running costs, low insurance, a three year warranty etc etc, who has got the last laugh. Yes, as you've guessed, I'm pretty satisfied with this car, and if you're one those people who doesn't give a toss about what anyone else thinks, this one is for you. Long live Skoda !!!!
The Skoda Felicia is now a highly rated car - and, although it does not have the same standards as the Octacia or Fabia - it is still a worthy car, and is incredibly cheap - this model is but a mere - £6500! Amazing value - considering you'll get 45 miles to the gallon out of it. Superb. Yes, it seems as though the jokes are over as Skoda are now making high quality cars that all can stand up to their rivals and owners - VW - and in some cases the Skoda Cars are better
What would you say if someone told you of a car that was very well priced and very comfortable and great to drive, well you would say great, I'll buy one now. Some may say well whats the catch, the catch, well there's really only one catch and that is in the buyers head as this car is a Skoda. No matter what people will always laugh Skoda cars away, they're rubbish, or they're not really a car is what some may say, but no matter what anyone says they are great. Their image has improved drastically and the Felicia is such a comfortable drive. My father bought a Renault car, a lovely big luxurious car, but after being in his and then in mine he told me truthfully that he was sorry he had not bought a Skoda. So get the Skoda ideal out of your head people and start treating them like any other car and you will suddenly find yourself better off.
Skoda are trying hard at the moment to improve their image within the motoring world and if the quality of the Skoda Felicia is anything to go by then they should have no problem. I have been driving mine since it was bought new a couple of years ago. It may surprise many people to learn that the felicia is infact just the old model Golf and that the new style golf was infact designed by skoda instead of VW. There is plenty of power behind the car and although it could be easily be driven without it the power steering makes the car very light, making parking very easy. I got a great finance deal on mine but as skoda are still trying to establish themselves in the market place I am sure that there are still some good deals to be had. So if you are looking for a well built, reliable car that stillo has it looks then don't hesitate to look beyond the badge and buy a skoda felicia.
