Owned for 5 years, loved every minute in it! Mines been reliable, spent prob 1k in 5 years on it although I do all the work myself and service it myself. Fast, comfy and most importantly immense fun to hustle down a country road!
Having come from a Clio 172 that I kept for less then a year because of it being unreliable, I can see the GTi-6 handles much better and once rolling is quicker, top end the GTi-6 just carries on pulling where as the 172 would start to slow down a tad.
Cracking overall car and highly recommended to anyone after a cheap hot hatch, fuel consumptions a bit naff and insurance high but small prices to pay for still one of the best hot hatches around. Don't plan on selling mine for a long time to come yet!!

Well, as all the other reviews so far have mentioned reliability is not the 306 GTi's stongest feature. But then if you wanted reliability you wouldn't be looking at a Peugeot in the first place! 3 years on and I have had: - Broken Speed sensor (unfortunately the engine management system detected this and kindly switched the engine off for me, and only 12 hours after I bought the car!) - Oil leak (although possibly caused by the repair to the speed sensor) - Broken power steering ram - Water leak from the ventilation system somewhere - Air bag sensor fault (annoying problem that required a complaint to head office to resolve) - Air conditioning pipe failure (plus an ongoing unidentified air con problem) - Radiator failure (although possibly caused by the air pipe replacement as the hole was next to a clip holding the new air con pipe......... I have changed to a different peugeot dealer) The biggest problem with the poor reliability is the fact that the engine (and some other parts) is completely different to others in the 306 series, this means that the Haynes manual does not cover the GTi and your local garage may well take some time to get certain parts in and most parts cost more than on a standard 306. Ring a garage and ask for a price on a part and they usually say '£xx as long as it is not a GTi'. Before buying one find out how good your local Peugeot dealer is, you will get to know soon after buying one if not! I can also confirm some of the other comments made so far: - Black shows the dirt but does look great when clean - The turning circle to the right is abismal (due to the size of the 6 speed box I am told), however turning to the left is the same (or least similar) to a standard GTi, - Rear speakers are good, front speakers are average - Performance is fantastic for the price of the car - Insurance is expensive but shop around and you can save £100'
s - Ride is a bit harsh on bumpy roads but seats are comfortable enough - Handling is excellent The car is well equiped safety wise with 4 air bags, 2 front and 2 side (although the side ones destroy the seats if activated, better than the driver being destroyed I suppose), disc brakes all round with ABS and wide tyres to help keep you on the road. That said, it still has a ability to bring a smile to your face every time you press the accelerator. If you want a reliable family car buy something else, if you want a cheap(ish) fast car buy a 306 GTi.
=== Update === 18 months on and the best part of £2,000 in servicing costs, what do I think of this car? Fun, expensive, fast, good looking, expensive, fast, awful turning circle, expensive. The above is a pretty good summary. The latest service, for 45,000 miles, should have been a quick change of the oil & filter, a quick once over and away. No such luck, one phonecall from the garage later and I was looking at being an additional £500 lighter in the wallet! A new clutch is the culprit this time, the factory-fit one having worn out in barely 45,000 miles! I know it's a six-speed gearbox and that gear changes are a more than frequent ocurrence but I would have hoped for a bit more than 45k miles out of a clutch!!! Add to that the new front brakes, battery, radiator and air-con compressor that have all needed replacing and the repair bill has so far been almost £2,000. Hence the reason for expensive! Still a cracking car to drive, but I'm going to be a lot gentler with the gear changes from now on. Downgraded from 5 stars to 4 simply because of the cost/reliability thing. === Update Ends === It took long enough but earlier this year I had (finally) managed to save enough to buy a car to replace the 16 year old Vauxhall Astra that I'd been driving since passing my test. But what to get? I wanted something sporty, somthing with a bit of oomph. But I had grown used to the convenience of a hatchback car with a large boot. I also wanted something no older than 3 years and preferably with average (or lower) mileage of around 36,000. Colour was no problem as long as it wasn't white. Add to this the upper limit of my budget (£8,000) and I was ready to hit the streets. Armed with nothing more than a Parkers Used Car guide and a couple of car magazines with reviews of sporty hatchbacks in I started to trawl the Internet to see what was out there. Quick scans of the Autotrader and Exchange-and-M
art websites were encouraging. Peugeot 306s, Volkswagon Golfs, Renault Meganes and cars of a similar class all appeared to be readily available (nationally), and within my price range. I narrowed my list down to a Peugeot 306 XSi, Golf GTi, Megane Coupe or a Fiat Bravo HGT and set off to the parts of town that bristle with used-car dealerships to see what was available locally. At the first garage I visited, there was a red 306 on the forecourt. 3 years old, cheap enough etc, etc. What's more it's a GTi-6, one that didn't even make it on to my list because there weren't too many around. Hmmmmmm. Interesting. Time to arrange a test-drive. Later that afternoon I arrive back at the garage... pick up the keys and take it for a drive. Oh Dear. So much for impartial decision making. This had to be the most fun I'd had in a (moving) car, ever! Anything after this was going to feel boring, surely. 20 minutes later (and with the fuel-gauge dangerously close to negative figures!) I return to the garage and play it cool. I still have a number of other cars to look at, I'll give them a call later in the week. Suffice to say I scurried off and tried to find some other cars to test. Having spent a similar amount of time in both Golf GTi and a Megane Coupe, I was still dead-set on getting the 306. Excellent. Phoned the garage up the next day, put a deposit down and the rest, as they say, is history (including an AA inspection etc, etc). So now I've had the car for 6 months. It is still a joy to drive. The handling is crisp and responsive, the engine makes a wonderful noise and really kicks at above 4,500 rpm. The close ratio, 6-speed gearbox suits the engine perfectly and is one of the more positive gearboxes I've come across. It's fast and an makes light work of motorway journeys. The interior is fine, ride position suits me perfectly, the window-sill at just the right height for resting elbows on. Everything
is adjustable to make it fit 'just-so'. Even the factory fit speakers sound good (although the head-unit has been replaced). There's plenty of room in the back for 2 adult passengers (although 3 would be a squeeze and uncomfortable on a long run). The boot is big enough for a large suitcase (and extras) or a dozen bags of shopping. With the rear seats down the boot is incredibly spacious, capable of swallowing a 32" widescreen TV, fully boxed. On the down side; Fuel consumption maybe should have been a higher priority... around town I am lucky to get 20mpg. Things do improve on motorway journeys (up to 30 - 35mpg) but fuel costs are high for urban driving. Not that I'm complaining. Servicing costs aren't the cheapest around. Services are due every 9,000 miles with major services at 36,00 and 72,000. The 36,000 mile service I just had done cost approx £350, regular services are around £200. As ever, service costs don't include new front discs & pads which, whilst doing a sterling job of stopping the car, wear down at a frantic rate. As do the front tyres. 167Bhp through the front wheels, with no traction control can be a bit 'hairy' at times, especially in the wet. It took a bit of getting used to and it's all a part of the fun, but your tyres don't last too long. Insurance isn't all that cheap either. It's a group 15/16 car, so a lot will depend on your age/where you live etc but even in 'safe' areas insurance is pricey. The bodywork is another worry. Twice now I've left it in a car park to come back and find fresh dents in the doors where people have knocked it getting in to cars parked next to me, it certainly seems to dent a lot easier than most other cars I've driven. And the paint chips easily as well. Again not a massive complaint, but be careful where you park it! Other niggles? The turning circle has to be the WORST I've
encountered for a car this size, 3-point turns are prone to becoming 4 or 5. Changing gear down to 2nd is a delicate operation and is the only problem with the otherwise excellent gearbox. Around town the 6-speed 'box becomes a bit of a chore, requiring more gear changes than you may be used to in heavy traffic. Am I happy with it? Most definately! Driving is once again as fun as it was just after I passed my driving test! Part and parcel of owning a 'performance' car are the higher running costs so I can't complain about that and the niggles are just that, they're not problems or issues or defects, they don't even irritate me that much. Would I recommend the same car to anyone else? Without hesitation.
Relishing the chance to drive one of the most hyped cars in recent years I jumped into my friends 306 gti-16 First impressions left me disapointed - the interior is of low quality (A friends Skoda has a better quality interior) and although well equiped feels extremely flimsy. The controls lack the quality feel I have come to expect from german cars and there is the definate opinion that the cabin will start to fall to pieces once the car becomes a few years old. The enqine although reasonably gutsy when revved lacks low down torque and never feels like it has the full measure of its alleged power (167bhp). The gears are Ok - the shift quality is not the sweetest around - but adequate. Handling I must say is excellent - as long as the road surface is good - you cannot fault the grip and lack of roll - the 306 gives you confidence to push on through the twisty bits. The Ride is too hard for day to day motoring - I suspect Peugeot have traded in handling for ride comfort here - which although OK at first becomes annoying on long drives. Comfort levels are poor - the ride is hard and noise levels are way too high. Fuel economy is extremely poor some 10 mpg worse than a BMW 525 on average - this cannot be excused as the BMW is a much larger car and has 30 BHP more. Reliability of (my friends car) has been a disaster: A window fell out ! Fuel Injection Computer failed £2000+ Catalytic converter failed £800 Seat broke Door Seal Failed Clutch Failed Several small paint and trim problems Water Pump failed. Eventually the car was returned to the lease company early. Servicing is also very expensive when compared to other equivalent manafacturers. This car will seem good if you are used to average makes Vauxhall/Ford/Rover but in reality it fails to deliver. Save Your Money - buy German !
Even after driving it for six months putting my foot down still brings a smile to my face. Having owned the 1.8xt I was aware of the Peugeot way. The performance is fantastic and to compliment it Peugeot have designed the gti to stick to the road like glue. My car was second hand when I bought it so the engine was well broken in. Initially with the first service the warranty company had a large bill down to a defective Radiator , Steering Ram and Water Pump. This however probably is down to my bad luck rather than a general 306 problem. The inside is well equiped with all the toys and being 6'6 very comfortable. It is plush with its Leather/Suede bucket seat, the air conditioning is the ultimate luxory and very effective, personaly a good trade in instead of a sun roof. The stereo is well above average for a factory fit, the front speakers are no quite up to scratch but the rears (mounted in the parcel shelf) provide great depth and bass. The dash board provides info on oil level/temp outside temp and number of miles till next service. The design is sleek and slightly understated although much lower and slightly meaner looking than the standard models it does not satnd out like a sore thumb. The only ID is under the wing mirrors. In conclusion the performance is bone shattering, the handling is amazing and with 6 forward gears a delight.
Peugeot’s 306 GTI is a worthy successor to the 205 GTI. Powered by a 2 litre 167 bhp motor, the Pug can get a serious move on. I owned one for six months and when it was sold at 4000 miles, the engine was still loosening up – providing more power, more smoothly. Peugeot have always made cars that handle beautifully and this is no exception - it’s a fluid affair with direct steering providing excellent feedback. Accommodation is good, with a decent amount of room in the back; equipment levels on the GTI are also good. The downside is build quality, don’t expect German levels. The car feels a bit ‘tinny’ and the doors fail to shut with a solid thump. In fact, on mine – the driver’s door had to be shut hard to close properly. In conclusion, this car is a terrific driver’s car, push it and it will go like stink. Enjoy.
