      Excellent convertible - highly recommended

What can I say about this car apart from love love love it! The S2000 is a real driver's car that gives your hours of entertainment and brings back a certain joy to driving, even just about the town! I have had an s2000 for the last few years and really really enjoy it, its speed pick up and power are amazing and bring a huge smile to my face on a regular basis. Having the hard top for winter use (particularly in british winters) is great and then storing it for the summer so you can take advantage of any sliver of sun, it has one of the fastest convertible roofs which means you don't miss any sun! I personally don't find the fuel consumption too bad it is not as bad as say an RX8. It also looks fabulously stylish and hasn't aged in the least and also hasn't changed too much over the years. I would definitely recommend and have done so to my friends one of which has also bought one and are loving it! enjoyable, fun driving - fantastic!

I had been meaning to test this car out for ages as I have been seriously thinking about buying one (it may be a while before I actually get round to affording one, but that is besides the point). It has always been an ambition since these cars were released into the big wide world that I would one day own one. However, it was not until yesterday that I got a chance to drive one. Now get comfortable, strap in and hold tight as I take you on a little journey... The first thing that struck me about this car was it's gorgeous looks; although this is a small looking car- it only has two seats- it looked like a right beast! It has a very long bonnet and huge wheels which can hold up to 18 inch alloys. It's sharp and appealing edges are what makes this car look so classy and so different compared to a lot of other cars on the road. That was what first made me want one! But then I didn't know anything about this motor, only that it looked a treat, so I would have to find out if it's personality really lived up to it's looks. I decided to look it up on the internet to see if this was really the car for me, but I am sad to say that some of what I found wasn't to my liking; someone like me did not have much of a chance getting a test drive in one of these, let alone the credit- and the insurance (but we'll come to that later). So, for months- years- I dreamed of just having a go in one, but admitted that I would have to wait until I was at least 25 before I could be let loose behind the wheel! But that's where I was wrong! While talking to a friend who works in a garage, I noticed an S2000 just casually sitting pretty outside the showroom. I told my friend of my story, saying that I'd never be able to test drive the thing. To cut a long story short, the garage- you guessed it- were going to let me drive the car after seeing my license and insurance details! Anyway, onto the point, the car. The first t hing I noticed when I exitedly got into the drivers seat was the colour-coded leather interior. Being a sleek black beauty on the outside, it was a cool and attractive rich red on the inside; the two colours contrasted with each other perfectly making this look like a real stunner! The dash board was simple but sassy; there wasn't much going on there, but I felt that this added to the major style statement that this car seems to make. Anyway, it still had enough features (the revometer goes upto 9000 revs) and it had a digital display. The car doesn't start on the key. Instead, it has an 'engine start' button which was something differrent in itself. So, with one press of a button, the engine came to life with a roar. Giving the car a little rev, I notice just how very respondent this car is; with a little press of the accelerator the revometer needle shoots from the left side and over to the right quicker than you can say "Honda"! The salesman gives me a nervous glance and I can tell that he is regretting letting me take this for a spin! Oh well- too late now... ...driving the S2000 is every adenaline junkie's dream; it goes like a bullet from a gun and it's handling is superb. Although the ride can feel a little scary at times, that is the whole point! This is a fun car- it wasn't built with practicality in mind; it was meant to be thrashed around demanding s-bends and raced along an open road (and doesn't have much boot space either) But for the sake of the faint-hearted, this is not actually a dangerous car; it has plenty of grip so you will have to be a pretty wild but stupid driver if you manage to turn this on it's side or plough into a hedge! It also has two airbags just in case you get too carried away and forget to stop at the traffic lights... ...but back to the drive. As I was saying, the handling is great which makes this an exhilerating car to take around those winding co untry lanes; you'll be able to take these corners at a high speed and still feel safe enough to do it again and again. The car is also ideal to take to the wide open roads with; going from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds, you can see why! This is also a very powerful car which can produce a massive 237 bhp at 9000 rpm! So with it's combined power and feather-like weight, it's not surprising that this little beast can top 150 miles per hour on a good day! Another thing to say about this car is that it only runs on a 2.0 litre engine (1997 cc to be precise) so it can also be reasonably economical when you drive it in a normal manner! I was told that this car did one mile for every 50 pence (actually, that is rather expensive) but I found on an internet site that it does 28 miles per gallon, so it really is about average in that department, but quite good for it's class. Another thing I liked about his car was the fact that it has six gears. The pulling power of each of these gears is fantastic, with it going along at 70 mph in fourth gear and still pulling hungrily. Around the town driving is not what the S2000 was built for; this car does not WANT to go slow and is forever sneaking above 30 mph so have to make a real effort- sometimes even fight to keep it slow! But it is something that gets easy with practise! The suspension is good- it is relatively soft and a smooth ride; some may say that this spoils the excitement of sports driving and that they would prefer their cars a bit more rough n' ready, but to me this just added to the car's appeal. It is a smooth looker and is a smooth driver to match. After the drive was over, I did not want o let the car go! I felt like it was already mine and I could really see myself cruising around in this- it was just my cup of tea! I couldn't be dragged away that easily so I went inside to talk business. The salesman told me what I had been dreading- this car would probably cost someone like me more to insure than to buy (under 25, driving for just 2 years, no no claims as I've been under my dad's name al this time etc. etc.) This car would cost anyone a considerable amount to insure as it is right up there in the clouds with the Ferraris and Lambos in group 20. It seems crazy though, I mean, you can pay well over £100k for a beast of a car that can do 0-60 in 3 seconds with a six litre engine and over 500 bhp and it will be in the same insurance group as something like this- a REAL world car at an affordable £25,995 standard or £26,995 for GT version. C'est fou, non? Oh well, one can dream... To Celebrate its 50th anniversary Honda commissioned the S2000, its first FR drive sports car since the 1965 S800. With a classic long bonnet look yet modern styling touches the S2000 is a very impressive looking Sportster. I have always been very impressed by the engineering quality of Honda cars. So would it be as impressive to drive as it looked, well here are some statistics: Honda S2000 Type V Power: 246bhp/8300rpm Torque: 22.20kgf.m/7500rpm Engine: 1997cc, FR (L4 DOHC) Weight: 1260kg Now to the racing driver these are not that impressive but for social use these are perfectly acceptable figures especially when you see the 25500 price tag. Mechanically the car bristles with hi-tech gadgets that work to produce more power to liter than any Naturally Aspirated car. The 2 liter 16 valve engine with Limited Slip Differential and Honda’s aluminum VTEC variable valve timing and lift are the perfect example of why I am a fan of Hondas engineering. The model I test-drove came with a sporty, red leather interior. The driving position is quite low and gives a very racy feel, making the car feel like it is traveling faster than it actually is. The beautifully crafted aluminum Gear knob gave very smooth gear shifting and the car accelerates well through transmission. The dashboard has a sheik, modern interface with digital readout or speed and revs. The POWERFUL stereo system is impressive and the car also includes air conditioning and a foldaway cover. The handling is reasonable but not as impressive as the rest of the car. For the racing enthusiast well the braking is superb but other than that this car is a little disappointing, there is not as much speed as you would expect and currently little upgrade potential. The engine sounds smooth but not as powerful as I had hoped and the handling is not as impressive as expected. In short i wouldn’t buy this car to take it racing, but it is definitely and excellent choice for a personal sportscar because of its excellent price, impressive interior and engine tweaking. Enjoy.

We had long held the dream of owning a Black Porsche 911 and were in the position to buy one, so along we went for a test drive. Fantastic, as expected! Unfortunately, the Porsche dealer wasn’t willing to give us quite what we wanted for our 4-year-old SAAB so we decided to sell it privately and return for the 911. There was a Boxter in the showroom and we considered it briefly but after a test drive we almost decided to stick with the SAAB! On the way home, just for interest and having read the review of the new Honda S2000, since we were in the mood for test driving something with performance, we called into the local Honda dealer for a test drive. That was it! For 2/3 the price of a Boxter we could drive a car as enjoyable as the 911! There just happened to be a Black S2000 in the showroom, waiting for it’s future owner to sell some land or settle an estate or something like that, which would take a month or so. There was a waiting list for most colours but this black one was there and a new one could arrive before the other potential owner would be ready. The black looked sleek with red leather interior, very stylish. We didn’t have to sell the SAAB, we could both have nice cars! This Honda S2000 came with a bonus. A chance to drive on the Indy track, at speed!! I had the pleasure of that experience and the speeds I drove could not have been done legally on the roads!! I took my daughter as passenger; we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were part of a parade and every S2000 driver was intent on finding out what their car could do, I was no exception! My daughter enjoyed the cheering crowds whereas I was reveling in the exhilaration of the drive!! This little Black Beauty fully deserves it’s red ‘Start your engines’ button!! As far as specifications, you can find them on the website or in the dealer’s showroom. We have found that it lives up to everything promised. The red interior is great, it doesn’t get too hot to sit on in the sun and is easy to keep clean. The Black exterior looks wonderful when clean. It is very easy to keep clean, there is a swift reminder to clean it every weekend when you walk out and see it on a Saturday morning! The car is small enough for the kids to do a good job and earn some extra pocket-money, especially since Honda recommended the ‘Ming’ treatment and use of the ‘Ming’ cleaning products which are easy to use and leave the car shining like new. Our S2000 is now 18 months old and impossible to part with! We didn’t buy the additional wind deflector, we probably will one day but until then opening the glove compartment flap does an effective job, but it has to be empty or it soon will be! I’d recommend purchasing the wind deflector with the car. As far as maintenance goes, no problems, Honda are very reasonably priced and there generally seems little to do. Tyres, on the other hand, are a different story but that depends on how you drive the car. We have found an excellent specialist tyre centre who can supply the right tyres for the style of driving the car is used for. A second set of tyres is recommended for the weekend race track hire events with the Honda S2000 club. If you are considering a two-seater sports car with a fantastic driving experience even for every day, you can’t go far wrong with this ‘red-line’ special!! But watch the huge digital speedo readout which is there for a purpose!!

And who would disagree!? Under that glamorous and slick body lies a 240bhp monster waiting to shout out its 9000rpm! But the topless hood and power doesn't mean it has no manners. The S2000 handles better than the average Porsche despite being half the price. The S2000 could take on your Boxsters and your Z3's and could even make the SLK a little queasy and for £28,545 it'd probably be my choice (even though I'm only 16).

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

For anyone looking for a real driving experience, along with the thrill of driving a two-seater convertible, the Honda S2000 is very hard to beat. Specifically designed as a roadster, not a hard top with the roof cut off, the Honda is a driving enthusiasts dream. With drop dead looks, an interior based on a formula 1 car with everything at your fingertips, including the big red start button, and an engine, well, let’s go to the engine in a moment. The car that everyone talks about in this class is the Boxster, and not without reason, the Boxster is a sexy, stylish, car that performs well and handles brilliantly but there are a number of them on the road. The Honda is a bargain at £28,545, saving yourself £3000 on the list price of the Boxster before Porsche add on the ‘extras’, the S2000 comes with air-conditioning as standard, not the expensive extra on the Boxster, it also has a smooth 6-speed gearbox, available on the expensive Boxter S, and the S2000 has the engine to beat all engines. The S2000 is the world’s most powerful normally aspirated, i.e. non-turbo, engine. This is a 2litre, 16valve rip-roaring powerhouse of a VTEC engine, this little beauty adjusts itself to behave around town and go mad on the open road. With 240BHP and a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds this car does not hang around, combine that with only 4cm travel on the gearstick, front to back, and a six speed box, and you are ready for the drive of your life, yet fuel economy is as good as the Boxster at 28.5mpg. The handling is superb, using electronic power steering gives the Honda loads of feedback yet remains both light, as a component (adding to the performance) and around town. As is always the case for a roadster, storage is not high on the priority list, and whilst not matching the Boxster in this respect, only due to its front storage area, its boot is more than big enough for the weekly shop or the long weekend, including the golf clubs. In a rec ent Top Gear review the S2000 narrowly lost out to the Boxster, partly on storage, partly on the smaller fuel tank (only enough for 300 miles!) and partly on torque. This, I have to admit is where the Boxster wins, but if you like changing down a gear, or even two, and then putting your foot down then who cares. And revving this car is what it is all about, the VTEC engine red lines at a stonking 9000 rpm, and, no that’s not a typo, I mean nine thousand revs; in third at 30mph you floor it and keep going beyond 90mph,(theoretically obviously) and still haven’t hit the red line, amazing, not only that, but to go with the formula one style interior those clever guys at Honda have tuned the car to sound like a formula one car. From about 6000rpm where the engine takes off, the noise changes and all of a sudden you are David Coulthard, and Michael Schumacher is not going to stop you. Having driven a number of cars, including the Boxter, before settling on the S2000, I have never looked back, available in limited numbers you aren’t going to end up like the Z3, or MGF with them on every corner, it’s a car for drivers, people ask what you drive and most look blank, but the odd one or two, they just look at you and nod knowingly, and what a feeling, turning down the Porsche because it’s not good enough!
