From the moment you sit in this car from the moment you walk away, it has the feeling of luxury. The set up and design of this car is simply beautiful. It reminds me of a brilliant hybrid it has the acceleration that the teenage me within loves and the style of the all business 40 year old in a suit. As for performance 44MPG is an understatement I drove to Harrogate from Kidderminster on £40 and still had enough left to go to work for the entire week. When it comes to cars it's the feel it gives you when driving, my granddad once said to me there is no better feeling then having a lovely car. the feeling this car gives you is priceless. Finally from a 22 year old lad's point of view this car should come with a warning. IT'S A PULLING MACHINE! Every girl wants to feel special and ladies get your man to buy this car believe me you won't be disappointed.
Firstly performance - The car has a 140 hp 2.2 litre diesel engine which although not phenominal produces enough power to hold it's own against most cars, it has very good overtaking punch. For a diesel engine it's very smooth and even at high revs the power delivery is very smooth. I get a combined average mpg of 44mpg. The pedals are very responsive and feels a great car to drive. Being a BMW it has a fairly stiff ride so passengers are not so well catered for but it's far from uncomfortable and there's a decent amount of space in the rear for passengers. The boot, although large, isn't particularly well shaped so if your intending to take more than two suitcases to the airport then you'll struggle! but it's perfectly adequate for every day use. the car is very reliable and the only expense i've had is new tyres, new brake pads and a new clutch. It feels very solidly built which instilts confidence! overall a great buy.
I've owned my 2005 bmw 320d for 3 years now.
I bought my car when it was 3 years old and had 87k on the clock from 1 previous owner. The first thing I can say is dont worry about high milage bmw's if your thinking of buying one.. They really are built so well and will last you far longer than a lot of other cars.
The first thing i noticed other than the looks is the car is so comfortable and quite to drive. You can tell they have put a bit of luxuary into the design.
Second thing i liked is and I know this may sound silly but I really like the current MPG dial . I find myself driving far more economically now than i ever did knowing what my current consumption is, and on that note I'm getting around 40 miles to the gallon around town and up to about 50 mpg on a motorway run, which in this day and age of petrol / diesel prices is quite good...
Third thing is its actually quite quick and powerful when you need it. Don't get me wrong this isnt a sports car by any means but it does have a little bit of "ooomfff" about it. (notice the technical term there ) . Bear in mind i've owned subaru impreza's, toyota mr2's astra sports, clio sports, and i've driven quite a few others including porsches. So i've had some powerfull cars in my time.
Styling wise its a classic look, simple but comfortable interiors. Nothing too sexy but very functional. The boot is large enough but can be a little tight getting the golf clubs in at the right angle.
Tax is cheap compared to most other 2 litre cars I know of as well. I was paying about £220 a year for my 2.0 litre impreza and this 2.0 litre bmw is only around £150 for the year.
Downsides, its rear wheel drive.... which basically means its fine most of the year but in bad weather like we had this winter with the masses of snow and ice its a nightmare. Basically don't use a bmw in the winter.
Which is a shame really because the rest of the year it really is a top car.
The 320d has one major fault, the turbo can go at any time and can cost upto £3.500 to fix. BMW UK say it is not a fault but when you check the net for "faulty turbo bmw" you will see its wide spread. I would advise anyone thinking of a 320d to think again.
There are some great deals around on the BMW 3 series at the moment if you shop around. I got an 05 plate during 2008 for £8500.
I was a bit unsure of getting a diesel assuming that there would be too much of a 'drag' compared to petrol but its really pretty good when it comes to pulling away, obviously it's no M3 but the 2 litre turbo diesel 135bhp engine gives you enough in most driving situations.
The engine is exceptionally quiet for a diesel and there is considerable comfort in driving, on longer distances especially when you can cruise along in 6th gear this is really noticeable, like chilling in a nice armchair!
I've got a dark blue one, it was that or black for me, both look really classy and of course are proper mens' colours!
Fuel economy..I spend a lot of time sitting in traffic in low gears but even so my 125 miles communting to work mon-fri plus a few miles at the weekend costs only around £25 (current diesel price 97p per litre)
One small downside if you are switching over from a petrol bear in mind that you will need to be in a comparative lower gear at low speeds..I got into a habit during the fuel crisis of driving my petrol car in 5th at pretty much any speed!...if you do this and stall the BMW, which I have a few times its not that easy to restart because of the start/stop switch...so don't try and save a few pennies by being in too high a gear!
I've owned a 2001 320d Touring, the 136 Bhp model, for 2 years now, its been a reliable car, excellent for cruising in on long journeys.
Do be aware however that there are issues with the BMW 2 litre Turbo diesel engine, it seems to have a habit of turbo failure, which is expensive to fix. Also on the later 150bhp models, inlet manifold flaps can break off and enter the engine cylinders causing much expensive damage. BMW you need to recognise this and help affected owners!!
However if you maintain the car well, it is sugegsted to do 6 monthly synthetic oil changes, the turbo should stay healthy and provide many years service.
My car has done 75000 miles, there are a few issues: the clutch is getting juddery, the glass tailgate has an electric catch which opens by itself, there are a couple of small rust patches.
On the whole though a good family car, reliable and better and more classy than a new Mondeo or Octavia for example.
what more can i say this is my second bmw and it continues the excellent tradition of comfort ,reliability and beautiful looks
i have had this car from new and have put up 69000 miles on it and have never had a mechanical or electrical fault i have just had it serviced whenever due ,
what i love most about this car is the sheer torque with more torque than the equivilent 3 litre petrol it is magnificent, and with the 6 speed transmission it is very fast. since getting my first bmw i knew it would be hard to go back to any lesser brand but now i would find it impossible.
This is my first BMW, and I am sorry to say my last. The 320d has a reputation for turbo failure, which I believe applies only to pre July 2003 models. This failure can happen at any time regardless of service history and so cannot be predicted or circumvented and is a widely publicised failure amongst 320d owners on the internet!. The cost of repairing this vary between £2000 - £3000 and is not something which I would expect from a name like BMW.
Other drawbacks include driver comfort, which is virtually non existant, and the BMW driving experience can only be described as being dragged over a pebbled beach, after 15 mins in the drivers seat you rapidly experience another feature of the 320D - namely BMW "Numb Bum", which I must admit was not publicised in the brochure.
Both rear seat and boot space are limited and certainly not inline with the size of vehicle, and all BMW's rivals all seem to have more copious amounts of both, so if you have a family (or are planning one) maybe this car is to avoided!.
I bought the BMW 320d thinking that I was going to experience comfort and reliability, and within 1 month of buying a 2002 model, i was left bitterly disappointed on both accounts, especially as I found that the Turbo failure was a known problem and affected a large number of pre 2003 320D's
So if you are planning on buying a 2nd hand model, then avoid anything below a 2003 model, unless you factor in the risk (and expense) of needing a new turbo.
Prior to buying this model, I owned a Vauxhall which in comparison suffered no faults in the same league (or expense) as the BMW in the nine years in which I owned it, and was also more comfortable in comparison.
I recently (March) purchased a 320D SE Saloon. During a subsequent holiday in France (in May), I was unfortunate to have a puncture whilst travelling at high speed. The tyre was damaged beyond repair. It was only then that I discovered BMW have taken to fitting space saver spare wheels, presumambly as a penny pinching exercise, since the boot is perfectly capable of accepting a full size spare wheel. Next problem the made in France (yes I was in France) tyres where unobtainable for 20 (yes 20) days. I telephoned the BMW Emergency Breakdown service, the best they could do was direct me to a tyre dealer who did not have the correct tyre. Once back in the UK it took the local BMW dealer 3 working days to obtain a replacement. Be warned do not get a puncture in your new 320D, unless you enjoy driving at 50mph until they source you a tyre.
I ordered a 320D SE 1998cc 2002 model from my local BMW dealer in October 2001 for delivery in December 2001. I was impressed with the dealer (Dick Lovett), as the sales guy was not at all pushy but allowed me to take my time looking over the car and responded well to questions I raised. The first test drive I had was with the sales guy and lasted around 40 minutes, he then arranged for me to have the car for the whole day that weekend. This whole day test drive was excellent and really let me get know the car without any sales person around, and after that I was hooked and continue to purchase the car. The list of options available is huge and it took some time to decide what I wanted. This new car was to replace my company Astra and I purchased it myself using my companies opt out option. The car was ordered for December as my Astra was being recalled on the 15th December. However, as the date draw closer the BMW dealer contacted me to say my car was delayed and would not now be available until the first week in January 2002. I explained this would now leave me without a car for 3 weeks over the Christmas period, ‘no problem’ said BMW ‘we will arrange for a loan car to be delivered to you on the 14th December, and you can kept it until your car arrives’. True to their word a Y reg BMW 320 was dropped off to me. Delivery of the car was painless, we checked over the car and then completed any paperwork - all were correct. Furthermore I ended up with a car registered in 2002 due to their delay, which should help future resale values. They also discounted some options I had chosen for any inconvenience I suffered ! The handbook tells you not to exceed 3500 rpm for the first 1250 miles, so I drove away carefully. The engine felt truly awful for the first 300 miles or so, it had no power and was noisier then I remember from the test car and I began to wonder if all was well. Thankfully, after that it began t
o loosen up nicely and now with 6500 miles on the clock runs like a dream. The engine can only is heard at idle and under hard acceleration, but this disappears if you have the radio on. On the move it run almost silently with only a small amount of tyre noise coming through, passengers are amazed when you tell them it’s a diesel. The new 1998cc engine is excellent and seems well mated to the car, power delivery comes in progressively from the word ‘go’ without any turbo lack or the usual mad power boost you get at around 2000 rpm in other turbo diesels I have driven. It is fun to drive and feels very quick in day to day driving, you can breeze past traffic on A & B roads and blast down the motorway without even breaking a sweat. The handling is great for a car of its size you can throw it into any corners and know you’ll come out the other side without any fuse, the standard traction control is sometimes a little to eager to kick, but mated with ABS made it a joy to drive in the snow. Fuel consumption has been impressive to. Hard driving 42mpg Driving steadily (but not boring) 46mpg Motorway (70-85mph) 50mpg Motorway below 65mph 68mpg CO2 is low 148 0-60 mph in 8.9 seconds 50-75 mph in 7.5 seconds in 4th gear The fuel tank holds 13.9gal and I am filling up every 600 miles or so costing around £40.00 Servicing shouldn’t work to expensive either the car decides when it needs to be serviced depending on how it is driven, however it’s usually around 14,000 miles during standard driving. The first service at 14,000 is a simple oil change followed by a main service at 28,000. The build quality is excellent, everything feels wonderful to touch and use. The driver is well catered for in this car, everything comes easily to hand and there are many labour saving devices the list of standard equi
pment on the SE model I have is huge, the highlights would be Seat occupation air bags, side airbags, Automatic Stability Control + Traction, Park Distance Control at the rear, Automatic air conditioning, cat1 alarm/immobiliser, Follow-me-Home function on head lights, On-board computer (showing average mpg/mph, outside temperature, distance before you next need to fill up) Window lifts electric at the front and rear, with open-close fingertip control, trap release and comfort closing function with remote key, Exterior mirror electrically adjustable and heated, Remote control key with automatically recharging battery, 16” Seven Star Alloy Wheels, Cruise control, Auto dipping rear view mirror, I could go on and on here ! I also added a few options of my own, including a body styling kit, Auto sensing wipers and headlights, Climate comfort windscreen. CD players single and boot box. All of these add up to make for great car to spend many hours in. So any bad points – For a car of this size the rear passenger space is poor and the rear bench is really only made for 2 adults. This is due to the car being rear wheel drive and therefore having a large transmission tunnel through the cabin. Boot space is also limited with a small opening. There is a good amount of small oddment spaces throughout the car. The rear parking sensors become confused easily and do not work well over rough (gravel) areas, where they scream at you. The steering wheel is a little thin for my liking. That’s about it ! All in all the car does most things wonderfully, looks great, feels good and is easy to live with. However the badge comes with a high-ticket price and I am sure you would find most of this car’s qualities in a car from one of the mainstream car makers at a much lower price, but you probably wouldn’t find them all brought together like in this BMW. One of the reasons I bought this car was that I had owned a BMW in the past and loved it.Furthermore I had a huge amount of respect for the brand and the backup if things went wrong. However all that has disappeared.This car is a complete dog when you consider what it costs.I have covered only 10000 miles so far.But have had problems with ,the clutch,the flywheel,water leaks,the electric windows and general squeaks and rattles.BMW UKs attitude has been indifferent. On the driving front,the pedals are offset which makes the already heavy clutch feel heavier. Between 0 and 1500 rpm the engine lacks all power, making the car extremely easy to stall (usual or what for a diesel car) Once on the open road it is a lovely drive and very economical. I ,for one, would not buy another
