      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      A night before deicer that didn't work for me.

      I passed my driving test late last year and because of this I have obviously had a need for car products in my life. Admittedly I have gone a little overboard with some products but where possible I am always looking for something to make my life easier. I purchased this night before deicer myself in the hope that it would make my life easier when it comes to leaving my home early in the morning. I paid full price for this, £2.99 for 500ml, which isn't something I would necessarily do normally. This was something of a part practical part impulse purchase.

      The idea for using this deicer is that you can spray this on to your car windscreen in the evening when you leave your car for the night and in the morning you will supposedly come out to your car and find that there is no ice on the windscreen. This is quoted as working to temperatures as cold as -25C (something we don't suffer here of course) and it is supposed to stop the ice from actually sticking to the windscreen.

      Basically to use this I just got home in the evenings (When I knew it was going to be freezing overnight) and I done all my usual routine (locked my car, checked my alarm, got my bags out the boot etc) and then I set about spraying this on to my windscreen. There is a trigger dispenser on this that is simple to use and a fine mist is sprayed on the windscreen. The spray is quite sticky but is clear and sticks to the windscreen easily. I used this on 7 or 8 different occasions and each time the results that I got were as follows:

      In the morning, say between 6 and 8 am I would go out to my car, to go to work or go out for the morning/day and then I would find a layer of ice on my car windscreen. My car seemed to have just as much ice on it as before and it certainly wasn't any quicker or easier to shift the ice either. At the time I didn't have a spray bottle of normal deicer to hand so I had to use my scraper to clean the ice from my windscreen and this frustrated me no end and added several minutes on to my journey time that morning and every day for the rest of that week at least. I did try, several times, to turn on my windscreen wipers to see if the ice was there but just simple to clear and it wasn't. This deicer doesn't claim to stop ice but instead it says that ice will be simple to remove, it isn't though.

      I tried using a little and a lot of this deicer and neither worked well at all. There really was nothing good from using this at all and I actually ended up getting rid of this with half a bottle left just because I was annoyed with using this time after time after seeing it in the boot of my car and being disappointed every day when I still had to spend minutes scraping my windscreen.

      I would not recommend this product and I am rating it just 1 star out of 5. The bottle is reasonable and the trigger works well but this doesn't work at all for me personally on my car and for that reason I would not recommend it.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        The money might be better spent on traditional de-icers and scrapers.

        This contribution may be timely as the mild winter weather we've been enjoying finally gives way to the inevitable...

        With several family cars to look after, limited garage space and living in a relatively cold area, over the years I've tried just about every trick in the book to keep everyone mobile through the most severe conditions. Halfords products, while not necessarily the cheapest, have generally proved helpful additions to my armoury. Unfortunately this spray isn't one of them!

        Perhaps if I'd seen some of the reviews published recently I might have known better. But I was tempted by a Halfords 'multibuy' offer a couple of years ago and still have two of these gathering dust and taking up valuable shelf space. Despite following the instructions on several occasions, I can't say this has ever lived up to its claim to prevent the build up of ice overnight.

        Reading carefully, I see this product claims to prevent ice from bonding to the windscreen. It is supposed to achieve this by forming 'a temporary coating that absorbs condensation'. As far as I can judge, it doesn't actually prevent ice forming.

        ~~Our experience to date~~

        So far, I've been quite disappointed. This spray was supposed to eliminate the need for conventional de-icer and make early starts in winter 'quick & easy', just using the wipers or a cloth instead of scraping etc. But on several frosty mornings this does not seem to have worked, ice has still formed and I've had to resort to more traditional methods.

        Experience suggests the money would be better spent on other solutions, including Halfords concentrated de-icer spray and maybe their lock de-icer, both of which seem quite effective. That's assuming, of course, garage space isn't available - or perhaps even a windscreen cover(?)

        ~~Further tests?~~

        I may just give this one more try, as the nights are set to get distinctly colder, and will update this review if appropriate. According to the blurb, the product 'will not freeze at -25°C.' We'll see... Interestingly, Halfords state that this product was 'Originally formulated for use by the Armed Forces in extreme arctic conditions'. Is it just conceivable that it only works in such extreme conditions? On second thoughts, let's hope we don't have to put this to the test any time soon!

        ~~Availability & price~~

        Halfords are currently selling this 500ml spray for £2.99.

        ~~Verdict~~

        The money might be better spent on traditional de-icers and scrapers. (Wrap up well!)

        ~~Advantages~~

        * None for me

        ~~Disadvantages~~

        * Waste of time and money

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Not worth the money, a waste of time.

          With the cold weather well and truly upon us I thought it may be appropriate to write this review now. That isn't because I am using this product to help me out on the icy mornings. No, this is because I used the halfords Night Before De0icer last year with very limited results. Take it as a warning, really, that this product is as much use as a chocolate fireguard, anyway.....

          The Halfords Night Before De-icer is designed to do pretty much what it says on the handy plastic spray bottle. It is designed with the driver in mind, keeping the ice and frost at bay during the night, leaving you with an ice-free windscreen so you can easily drive the car in the morning without having to scrape and spray your way to a clear screen. The spray is simple to apply. I used to apply this spray at night if the car was getting left on the driveway. Application was simple due to the trigger action spray. The solution is quite thin, and protection against ice forming is given, provided the temperature doesn't fall below -25°C. The packaging also states that it 'prevents frost bonding to windscreens'. Quite a bold claim, but would it be able to live up to it?

          I applied the spray liberally and returned to my car the next day. My windscreen appeared to be as frozen as I would expect without application of the product. I thought that maybe the ice would clear very easily, as the product would prevent it from forming hard over the glass, but I were wrong. The windscreen wipers were actually stuck solid, a result of the spray in my opinion. My view was that the spray had actually had a negative impact on keeping frost and ice at bay, and for around £3 for the bottle I were quite annoyed.

          Halfords do sell a lot of good quality car cleaning products. Unfortunately their Night Before De-icer offers no comfort to the user. I were constantly left with frozen windscreens and as much hard work de-icing as ever. Ultimately I must say this product doesn't work, and I totally agree with the other reviewers that have rated this product 1 out of 5 stars. I wouldn't be surprised if it had a rating of ZERO, but the lowest score I am able to give is 1, so one star out of 5 it is for the Halfords Night Before De-icer.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Save your money - invest in a product that works

            It may seem a strange time of year to be writing a review for a de icer, the last thing we want to be thinking about are icy cold nights! However, having used this all last winter I really think it deserves a warning before next winter rolls around and maybe it's just me but winters seem to be coming in quicker and colder each year!

            What Is It?
            ~~~~~~~
            Well, the idea behind it is fantastic. Mornings are a rush for most people, especially cold winter mornings where your bed just seems so much more inviting then the cold air outside. Then, after you've got yourself ready, you're faced with the  sometimes mammoth task of scraping off a load of snow and ice. Taking up precious minutes out of your morning and turning you into something vaguely resembling an ice statue in the process!
            This product is designed to combat that whole problem. You simply spray on your car windows at night and in the morning your car is ice free. Wonderful, you think, why was this not invented earlier?
            What Do Halfords Say?
            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

            According to Halfords, this works down to -25C. It was originally designed for use by the Army when they were working in Arctic conditions. It works by preventing ice sticking to your windscreen - there's the important point to note. It doesn't claim to prevent ice forming, merely prevent it sticking.

            My Experience
            ~~~~~~~~~
            I got this as a present (strange present I know but I was grateful none the less). So, I thought great, this is going to be the solution to all my problems in the morning and hopefully mean my fingers don't drop off through frostbite in the mornings! I let my car cool down (it doesn't say you should but I thought it might work better) and then sprayed a thin layer over my windows. The pump spray works easily and the spray releases a thin, clear, almost jelly like substance that sticks to your windows and covers them with a thin layer. There, that should be it and in the morning all I need do is turn my wipers on and wipe any ice that had formed off the side windows; problem solved! How wrong could I be?
            The following morning I went outside and saw my car covered in ice. No surprise there I thought, it had been cold enough to form ice and as I previously stated this doesn't claim to prevent ice forming. Not a problem though, I should just be able to turn my wipers on and wipe off the ice. So, I got in the car, turned the ignition on and turned on my wipers.. nothing, they were frozen! Not a great start. Oh well, maybe it had worked on the side windows. I went back inside and got a clean cloth to try and wipe off the ice.. nope, still wouldn't budge. I resorted to the old fashioned way of de-icer and a good scraper. I should probably add here that the scraper was needed as the ice was firmly stuck to my windscreen which just confirmed to me that the night before de-icer had done absolutely nothing.
            The following day I tried again thinking that maybe I hadn't sprayed enough on or maybe it had just slid off before the ice stuck so this time I sprayed on a fairly thick layer just before going to bed at around 11PM thinking the thicker layer should solve it if it was a problem of not enough product and the time should solve the problem if it was sliding off before ice formed.
            The following morning I went out with slightly less expectations then I'd had the morning before but still willing to give it the benefit of the doubt but again I had to resort to de icer and a scraper. The ice, yet again had stuck firmly to my windows.
            Price, Availability And Recommendation
            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

            This is a Halfords product and as such only available from them. It costs £2.99 for a 500ml bottle but since it appeared to do absolutely nothing to prevent ice sticking to my windows I really am not recommending it.

            Now it does claim that heavy rain or rapid thaw after application will reduce it's effectiveness but it didn't rain or thaw after I'd applied it. Quite why a thaw would reduce it's effectiveness anyway I'll never know as there's no need to prevent ice sticking if the ice has thawed anyway! Save your money, do it the old fashioned way and invest in a de icer that actually works.

            This is a shame really since usually I think of Halfords as a name I can trust, not in this case.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              It useless at what it claims to do

              This product is absolutly useless and really doesnt do what it is supposed to in the slightest. Basically in essence the product could be very good,the idea is that you spray it over your windows the night before, and providing the temperature doesnt fall below -25 degrees, the windows will not freeze over.

              I have tried it on a few occasions, and even gave it to my dad to try just to make sure i hadnt been doing anything wrong, both times i followed the instructions and woke up to find a windscreen froze over just as if I hadnt used the product at all. He used it to the same useless affect, so I had to draw the conclusion that it was the product and not myself.

              I did however, through luck find that it works just as a normal de-icer does and by spraying it over the already frozen screen, it does get rid of the ice, just as if it was a normal de-icer. However, as this wasnt the reason I bought the product, it really doesnt do what it says it does.

              This can be found for usually around £2.99, and during the winter months is on offer of three for two, which is how I bought it with two other normal de-icers. As I found that it did work as a de-icer, all was not lost and for the money it wasnt too bad, but dont for one second think that this will do what it says it will.

              Interestingly, when I visited the store to stock up for a small holiday break down south, I overheard the staff commenting on how bad the product was compared to a normal de-icer. Given the bad reviews on here, and the fact that even the staff think its useless, I really wouldnt reccommend this in the slightest. I now just cover the windows with tarpaulin the night before and find this works perfectly, so this would be my advice.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              What a waste of money!!

              I have never been a fan of Halfords as I tend to think their prices are over inflated and the service in any of their stores I have used has been awful but when I saw an advert for this night before de-icer spray it seemed worth a try.

              I do not have too many early morning journey`s in the car but if we have the grandkids over on a school night then I have the school run and my wife and I occasionally go for an early morning run on Sundays and wherever you are off to early morning there is nothing worse than having to scrape the frost and ice off of the windows before you set off.

              This spray from Halfords comes in a trigger spray bottle and the instructions on the bottle are very clear and easy to follow, they tell you to cover the windscreen with a generous coating avoiding getting it on the paintwork and tell you to remove any overspray immediately.

              So I followed the instructions carefully and the idea now is that my windscreen should be saved from freezing over as long as the temperature doesn't fall below 25°C.

              On both the nights I used it the temperature never fell below minus seven but funnily enough my windscreen was every bit as frozen as it would have been without this stuff so it appears to me like the product did nothing at all.

              I genuinely do not think this product works at all and my son tried it on his car believing that I had done something wrong and he agrees now that this just doesn't work even if you follow the instructions to the letter you still have a frozen windscreen the next day so get a windscreen cover or continue to scrape but certainly do not waste nearly £3 on this rubbish.

              **Please not that the Quick rating guide Dooyoo have given this product does not actually fit the product at all.**

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              Save your cash!!

              I bought this product as I work night shifts and the last thing I feel like doing at 7 in the morning after a 12 hour shift is to de-ice my car. The Halfords Night Before De-Icer's bottle promised that it *Prevents frost bonding to windscreens, *Prevents freezing down to -25°C and *Saves time on frosty mornings... it sounded like just the thing I needed.

              The spray comes in a bottle with a trigger spray, which looks similar in desing to a lot of household cleaners. Before you can use it you have to turn the nozzle on the trigger to the on position which is denoted by a "spray" symbol, to prevent it from spraying it is turned to the "Stop" position.

              With all the cold weather we've been having lately I've had the perfect opportunity to try it out, I followed the instructions on the bottle shook the bottle, and sprayed it generously over my windscreen making sure that I'd covered the whole screen and left a coating on the glass. I was careful to avoid getting any on the paintwork of my car as the bottle advised to remove overspray immediately.

              While I was outside I decided to use it on my boyfriend's car at the same time, hopefully saving him a bit of time in the morning too.

              I found the bottle with it's trigger function easy to use, although it didn't spray large areas at a time like an aerosol spray would. The liquid of the spray is clear and colourless and looks much the same as water.

              The next morning even though it was cold I didn't leave the house any earlier than I normally would, I naively thought I wouldn't have to spend my time trying to find the de-icer or scrape ice off of the windows of my car before leaving for work. How wrong I was!! My car had still iced over, and strangely the ice seemed thicker than it normally did. I may as well have sprayed water over my windscreen the night before for all the good it had done. I took a quick look at my boyfriend's car and his was the same too.

              The result of this (plus a closed road too) was me arriving into work later than I had imagined, I suppose I can't blame the spray entirely for that although the alternative route I took didn't actually add that much more onto my journey time so maybe I can?!

              Feeling generous I gave the spray a second chance, maybe I had done something wrong when I first tried it out (although I did apply as instructed) and used it again on a different night. The result was exactly the same as the first time round, although I did go outside earlier anticipating that I probably would have to de-ice the car before I could leave.

              As I have applied this just as the instructions on the bottle told me to do, I think that it must be the product that doesn't work on this occaision unless I've missed something on the weather forecast and it has been even colder than I thought it was.

              I paid £2.99 for a 500ml bottle of this Night Before De-Icer. Personally I'd save your cash or put it towards a decent "normal" de-icer or a good ice scraper.

              Thanks for reading.
