Great sounding car stereo with CD, MP3 and Bluetooth at a bargain price

When I bought my second hand car everything about it was perfect it was nice to drive came with a
full dealership service history and had obviously been well looked after there was only one downside
it came complete with a tape deck!

It was a long time since I had even owned a music tape and even longer since I had owned anything
to play one on so all the music I have is MP3 or CD so after 3 weeks of suffering radio stations it was
time for a trip to Halfords to see if I could afford a CD player.

The Sony MEX-BT3600U was on sale for £90 as an ex display model which meant it came with no box
or instruction manual just the stereo itself. Due to being in the ex display sale Halfords free fitting
wasn't an option and although they offered to fit it quite cheaply they couldn't do it until the Monday
as this was on a Friday I decided to fit it myself rather than wait.

The unit was easy enough to fit although removing the old one took way longer than I thought and
a trip back to Halfords was required due to them selling me the wrong connector kit for my car. Once
we had the right kit it took around 10 minutes to fit.

One of the things I really like about this is the fact it has an aux in and USB connection which you
can connect your MP3 player to which saves me having 20 CDs lying about my car floor like I do in
my van. Although I mainly use this to play music from my MP3 player on the occasions I have used it
to play CDs it works brilliantly with no skipping if you go over bumps which is handy in the city we live
in as the council seem to be allergic to fixing holes in the road but have a never ending budget for
fitting over sized speed bumps which makes driving down some streets a bit like riding in the Grand National.

There's also a Bluetooth option with a mic in the front of the stereo for handsfree calling which automatically cuts the music when you accept a call. I find the Bluetooth works pretty well in our car
and easily as good as separate handsfree kits I've used in the past. I think the sound quality of the
this depends a lot on where the unit is in your car as my friend also has this stereo and he finds the person on the other end of the call can hardly hear him but his stereo is placed quite low level with
the gear stick whereas in our car the stereo is quite high level with the steering wheel. The Bluetooth
can also pick up music from your mobile phone via bluetooth which is handy when the MP3 player runs
      out of charge.

The sound quality is really good but only if your speakers are good as well I ended up upgrading
the original speakers in my car after a couple of weeks owning this and it really made a huge
difference to the sound. There are a variety of preset EQ options to change the sound such as rock,
etc or the option to change the EQ settings manually with a 3 band EQ to tailor the sound to
      your preference.

The display is clear, bright and easy to read with blue lighting showing the track playing or the name
of the radio station you are listening to and switches to clearly show the modes and settings as you
use them. The layout of the stereo and well lit controls makes for easy use although I find the buttons
are slightly small but this is probably due to being used to our Ford van which has a built in stereo
about twice the size of this unit so more room for bigger buttons.

For some reason I could not set the radio stations on this and every time I thought I had got
them programmed in and saved would end in disappointment as I got in the car next time and they'd
gone again. As I usually only listen to the radio occasionally I ended up just scanning for the station
each time although my other half eventually got the stations programmed in and saved I still don't
      know how to do it.

At 52W x 4 this stereo is easily loud enough to annoy passers by with your music choice and shake
small parts of your car at full blast but only if you also have speakers that match or exceed the power
of the stereo. The unit looks good especially when it's lit up and it looks more expensive than it
is so thankfully it comes with a removable front fascia for security so you can take with you when you
leave the car making the stereo useless to any would be thieves.

At £120 this is a great stereo for the price and I'd happily recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade
      their old car stereo.

      Fully featured CD unit

I bought this Sony cd player at halfords and had it installed there too. This is worlds apart from the old stereo that was previously installed in my car.

The main selling point of this unit is that it is bluetooth enabled. This means you can listen to mp3s stored on your phone. The most handy feature though is the ability to use the unit as a hands free calling kit, so you don't have to juggle multiple devices connected to your phone. Calls come through clear and my friends have said the same whilst I am using the device.

The CD player itself produces great sound. I usually listen to rock music and it sounds fantastic. Bass gets deep and it handles different ranges of sounds fine. There is also an auxiliary jack for your mp3 player and even a USB port too. I feel like I will never be without music in my car because the input options support everything you would want.

Well worth the money for the bluetooth functions

This headset has travelled with me from car to car as one breaks and I move on to the next this is the common item. The bluetooth functionality is the main selling feature and works very simply even for non technical people. The group fun that we have sharing songs from mobiles makes the longer journeys go in that much quicker. The only point to note is you cannot connect the device to ipods or iphones but this is Apples fault and not Sony's

The other main selling feature is the high quality internal amplifier which at 4 * 52 watts is about as good as you can get from the standard wiring and speakers in most cars. The amplified bass function gives very solid bass lines which is a feature you would expect from much higher specification models.

In conclusion, this is a high quality, affordable player which I use everyday in the car as a hands-free device and talking point for when I have passengers.

      Can't stop me now

I bought this stereo out of Halfords and had them fit it into my little Ford Fiesta. It replaced an old standard radio that came with the car originally. Back to the point. This is an outstanding stereo with lots of worthwhile features.

With the intention of replacing my current stereo, I wanted to buy one that had bluetooth connectivity because I had been pulled over before for using the phone whilst at the wheel. I had learned my lesson and paid the fine. I was not going to fall dumb a second time. Not only did this stereo solve that problem by having a hands free system built in, it was also able to playback my mp3 tracks from my phone. Something I didn't know it could do until the sales person told me so.

Not only that, it also has a front auxiliary to attach your Ipod allowing playback of your music through the car's speakers. And if you don't have an Ipod you can save music onto a USB drive and stick it into the USB port and that again will playback your music. Like all other stereos it has a CD player and radio, which has perfect reception. You can get all the major radio stations and local ones as well. You can receive stations on FM, MW and LW. There are over 25 presets to store your favourite stations.

The whole unit is very easy to use with most functions just one or two buttons that require to be pressed. In the dark the buttons light up and the screen can be seen very clearly even in the back seat. Setting your phone up through bluetooth is simple as long as you follow the instructions in the manual. It also comes along with a remote control for the users in the back seat.

The sound quality is excellent with different levels of bass and tremble adjustable through the stereo. The calls coming through are also very clear and the built in microphone picks up every word you say. This is a very good product and I think cheap. Altogether including fitting cost me a total of £150 to Halfords which im sure will be worth its while in saved fines.

Would recommend if only being used for the sound of the CD's

Sony BT3600 fitted by Halfords to my Audi A6 (not a noisy car). Sound quality is slightly harsh (despite playing with eq.) Love the USB facility, radio great, BT streaming from phone great, cd playback good, but there is a big downside....... the blue tooth phone.... I have paired with Nokia N96, sound quality coming in is crystal clear, but (despite changing all possible settings on unit and phone - to optimum levels) people I call can hardly hear me (sound "distant" most of the time ). Mic position is "behind" front face of unit and picks up too much cabin noise and not enough voice. So yes I have hands free calling, but driving down a motorway with your face touching the radio is not a great experience. There is a mic hi/low switch that makes no practical difference, other than to pick up more or less cabin noise. Should have got a parrot ! Have tried emailing Sony, but obviously they have better things to do, as I am only an end user. If the rest of the unit was not so good I would return it, so for now you will always recognise me if you see me, I am the guy at the wheel bent down below the dash shouting at his radio cd player!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Has to be one of the cheapest and best options for using a phone in the car

This has to be one of the best stereos on the market in terms of value for money and features included. Although it doesnt state a price, i know that Halfords are doing this stereo for £120 with free fitting which is great!
The bluetooth is a tad difficult to pair up initially but that comes down to not reading the instruction properly, once paired however, the bluetooth is easily as good as having a Parrot kit installed in your car and comes with many features that a parrot kit wouldnt. Your music is muted when your phone is in use and it simply requires you to push the central button to answer a call.
Also you get a usb connection and an aux in, allowing almost any type of digital device to be connected to the stereo, not forgetting the trusty old cd slot which will also play MP3's for those of you who dont have an MP3 player.
Sony's are alwyas easy to use and this is no different. It also looks quite stylish with the blue lights not too 'in your face' and the display is more than bright enough.
