So... I have just returned from the martello and I feel I must apologise for my previous review. This site is just awful. From the moment you first drive in it is clear that your choice of holiday park was a bad one and perhaps you shouldnt have tried to save that extra few quid. The martello sign itself is a clear indication of things to come. Old. Rusty. Decrepid. On its last legs. Then you get to the reception. Well, the broken down shed with a make shift desk.next door to a broken caravan which has bullet holes in the front window (might be from stones..??!!) Our caravan was easy enough to find. Drive in turn right and the first rust bucket you come to is yours. With a lovely view of the bins the back of the arcade and a wasteground. The caravan itself was filthy. Thick dust on the headboards. Circa 1978. The kettle was unusuable, I went out and bought a new one. My daughter made me get a blanket as the sofas were so disgusting she didnt want to sit directly on them. No microwave. No toaster. No freezer compartment in the fridge. Fire alarm battery dead. Half the wall lights not working and even the gas pilot light went out twice in the 4 nights we were there. The staff are unhelpful. The site is a mess and unloved. There is no security and it really is an uncomfortable place to be once the sun sets...kids running around, banging on the caravans, letting off fireworks. Even caught one staring through the window of my kids bedroom. I soon told him where to go and luckily we were never bothered by them again. But other caravans were having to deal with all sorts..including continuously having there mains electric plug pulled out!! I could talk about the awfulness of this place forever but I think you get the jist! And even if it is true that the owners have lost heart due to the council possibly taking over the site in ten years, thats no excuse for bad customer service and filthy vans. Honestly, walton is a lovely place. The beaches are gorgeous. Please don't sour your stay by holidaying at the martello. Pay the extra and go to the naze marine. Its 5 star in comparison. As I write this there is currently a fire blazing out of control in walton. An old warehouse containing ammo and land mines is ablaze and the bomb disposal unit is there. Hopefully the wind will blow in the right direction and the martello will be gone forever...
Just had a weekend at Martello camp, Walton. I am feeling rather sad not angry that this site has had the stuffing ripped out of it. It seriously needs an injection of love and care. Everything is old and tired, signs are missing, broken or weather beaten. Shops and entertainment sites are closed due to staff shortages which meant there was nothing to do. The bingo had ripped seat that could not be sat on and the area smelt bad. I have never seen a site which was like a ghetto before, condemned and boarded up caravans, derelict areas where guests move about, not a place to take your children. It seemed to have attracted families that were happy to allow their off spring to rampage outside the dance hall at night and with no sign of security it felt very unsettling. The caravan we had was dated but that didn't bother me, it was the ripped seats, the mould on the curtains that made it a disgrace. People are paying good money for a very half hearted holiday. I has been said that the site is very cheap and I would agree but it should never be that dirtiness is acceptable at any price.Very upsetting for me particularly as I had happy times there as a child, it either has to have a make over to continue or will be closed within a year, tragic.
Have just spent a weekend here at Martello caravan park 08/13. At Walton on naze. Sad is an understatement. Our caravan was clean ish thankfully but it had mould on the bedroom curtains, And dirty ripped sofas and the toilet leaned backwards. This site has had no money or TLC put into it for a long time I'm amazed its even allowed to be open. The children's play area should be closed for ever as it is also the area where they store gas canisters an old car parts? The arcade smelt bad of fags an beer an the sign amusements now only says mus. the original Martello sign has been left to rot. We have find memory's of this site as kids an went back for old time sake but sadly it's been left to fall apart. And as for the area of it where people have their own owned caravans on. We was shocked to see caravans boarded up with smashed windows caravans in filthy conditions left to rot many vacant spaces where caravans once where. Why has this happened and yet they advertise this as a happy holiday resort. Such a huge shame please someone put some TLC an money an make it a happy fun clean place again. Thought it was a family run business ?
i purchasd a van from the site in the middle october 2010 2 weeks before the site closed for the season and got a bill for £800 in november for site fees and electric etc. a month later i got another bill for site fees for £1300. in march 2011 i paid £2000 to clear this even though i queried the high price for the £800 bill when we only had use of the van for 2 weeks and was told that was to cover rates, water and electric for 2011. ok didnt think this was too bad but then got another bill in july for another £800+ for electric, water rates etc. when i queried this one was told "oh yes this bill always comes every july so the last one you paid was only up till now. due to family circumstances we where unable to visit at all from august 2011 and all of 2012 so in march i put the van up for 2012 i put the van up for sale. put a sign in the window and went into the site office and gave them a set of keys explaining the circumstances and if a buyer should come get what ever they can for it. shortly after recieved another bill this time for £3000 for a van we where unable to use. contacted the site to query this as i was lead to understand if your van was up for sale and you were not using it you were not charged electric water etc and no site fees as they take a percentage of sale price. made contact and said if you can sell the van for £4500 you can take what you want and was just laughed at by the woman in the office who said "no van on this site is worth that much you might get £2000 if you are very lucky but that wont cover our bill" i just hung up in disgust. last letter i recieved they were threatening to remove my van from the site without futher notice. well good luck to them they can have it as far as i am concerned that settles the bill.
Having just come back from a day out in Walton I decided to have a drive round the site and I was absolutely gobsmacked. I've never in all my days seen anything like this place, it is like the owners have just upped and left and the site has been sat for years. Old filthy wrecks of caravans all over the place, most with boarded up windows etc, all the buildings either shut/deserted or falling to bits, the grass looks like its never been cut, caravan ruins dumped all over the place, kids hanging around causing trouble even though it was in term time. All the rubbish bins overflowing with refuse more than ive ever seen anywhere before. I live on a poor council estate in ipswich and i just couldnt believe my eyes.this is just the start. I was so u believably amazed that this place is actually open. There was no sign of staff or anything, reception shut. All the signs look like they have been there years and years. It honestly looks like the place was suddenly deserted in the 80's. Shocking is an understatement.
Me and my family have been going to walton for 22 years now have enjoyed we have stayed at martello evey time and have enjoyed every minute, for the last couple of years they have been remordonisng it,they have a new cafe, takeaway and new reception they are slowy up dating the caravans if i may say looking good, yeah the shop needs up dating a bit the outside toilets need to reopen and have a make but, but never did use them anyway, the club house is good, great entertainment for the kids, the amussemts are great, my mum loves the bingo she has to go every nite, we have made great and wnderfull friends, they also have a littlefair there which i will say the motor bike rides do need to be up dated, since they hav been there for 22 years, theyalso have an internet cafe whichi havent used yet but hoping to use this year wen i go in june, martello caravan park is a peace of history plus famous as it has been used on a T.V. program we would recomend every one to go there who is on a low budget and needs to get away for a week or 2, the town is lovely and clean and the beach is fantastic and also the pier is great, everyone is friendly in town get along with everyone, an you will never be diapointed.
It is my opinion that this place is right up there with all the war zones in the world.Untill a short while ago i had a van on this site, lets see whithin a few yards in all directions, found many sheds broken into, found open sewr pipes where vans have been removed, broken electrical boxes (LIVE) broken glass left on the floor from busted caravans. The site is dirty and run down,As a child i remember going to walton with mum & dad and the martello was the place to be i would say now its the place to stay away from staff are unhelpfull and just plain greedy with the worst customer service i have ever seen.P/S to all those owners who rate this site try to get your van taken off and then see how you feel.My first granchild is due any day and i will never take her to this place to visit nevermind holiday.Outside the site exerlent place to be great for kids and adults with familys. My advise is stay away from the boundairys of the martello and have a great time.
I've been going to this site for over 20 years with my parents and grandparents and got my own van 2 years ago. I'll admit, like many others, this isn't butlins or haven but the prices reflect that! the club houses are good to go for a quiet drink in and the arcade keeps the kids occupied for a short while. the pool isn't great, but why do you want a pool when you have spectacular beaches like those on offer in walton? I love nothing more than chilling out outside my caravan with a beer and a bbq with my friends and family. each to their own i guess.
Even pikeys avoid this site because it so dirty. Sort your wig out Mr Watlin you look like a man in drag lol.. I've seen a couple of rats running around in the site office one with a blond wig and the other with a grey wig, i think they were also mating at the time.. not very nice to watch ,, DISGUSTING creatures. Once upon a time the rat with the blond hair also resided at 10 Downing.. (The Iron Lady). The rat with the grey wig can often be seen in the middle of the field close to the office..(Worzel Gummidge) I think its meant to scare the campers away. I believe these horrible rats have robbed many families that have saved hard expecting to go to a 4 star campsite.. check it out lol.. If you ever come across these two rats run for your life ..
I am a caravan owner at martello caravan park and love it so does my daughter everbody there is friendly and look out for each other there is some crime but you get that on every caravan site in the country thats the times we live in if you dont like it dont come but i know me and my family will be enjoying our time spent there this year and so will everybody else who owns a caravan there have fun all daz
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN, THIS CAMP IS A DISGRACE. I HAD A CARAVAN HERE, I HAD TO GET DRUNK MOST OF THE NIGHTS SO I WOULDNT NOTICE THE SMELL, DAMP, AWFUL ENTERTAINMENT AS I WAS ALWAYS ASLEEP. I WENT OUT DURING THE DAY TO KEEP AWAY FROM IT.BIGGEST MISTAKE I HAVE EVER MADE.STAFF WERE NOT HELPFUL WHAT SO EVER, KIDS RIDING THERE BIKES IN THE CLUB HOUSE, LACK OF SECURITY.STAY WELL CLEAR OF THIS CAMP, HAD TO PUT ONE STAR IN, BUT DIDNT WANT TO
This poor caravan park needs major TLC! I have been there for about 30 yrs both as child and a mother! Club hse and amusemants good but rest of camp just left to rot! Such a shame as the place is lovely, so nice I have actually moved nearby as I loved it so much! Someone please buy and give some serious TLC to this camp!
I had a holiday in a private owned van, i was not expecting the site to be really good as i was forwarned it wouldn't, we were not disappointed, we were using the caravan as a base to explore surrounding area, which was nice, the van was in a good position it wasn't new approx 10 to 15 years old, clean, tidy, modern equipped with all vacilities with no problems, so i guess by what others have said, bad ones can be hired anywhere, best get some pictures sent to you before going, as i did, did not use any of the vacilities on site so cannot comment, the town/seaside are walking distance and reminded me of my younger days of a unspoilt old fashion small seaside town that has everything to offer and a lovely beach too, the site could do with a bit of a tidy up thats all.
I have seen these bad reports, I own my own caravan and it is what you make it, ok it isn't butlins but its has some great club houses and food outlets, I would recommended you hire a caravan from a privet owner as you do get a personal touch and you know you will get value for money, the swimming pool side is great in the summer months and they have fantastic childern entertainment. 5 starts martello walton.
