      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Fast, simple, great tasting coffee

We have had one of  these in our home for years. Long before we had either of our coffee machines we always had a Cafetiere. This one in particular is a recent enough addition to our kitchen. This unlike our previous model (that's now sitting in the press) is quite stylish in it's appearance. It's slightly wider as well which give it a chubbier more stumpy look that really looks much better than the thin kind that is more widely available. We have a silver finish instead of the gold one above although that looks good to.

      But what is a Cafetiere?
Well it's a simple insulated jug like devise that brews ground coffee beans with out the need of electricity. I say that but do do need to boil the water before hand so it will use some power even if it's not from the device itself. This will not work with coffee beans that have not been ground you can either grind them yourself or if you don't have the right equipment you can just buy a bag of ground coffee beans in most stores.

Depending on how strong you like your coffee you just pour some hot not boiling water into the jug with the internal plunger removed then add a few spoonfuls of this ground coffee to the water. I then return the lid with the plunger sieve raised. I like to leave it to sit for a minute or two then I slowly begin to push the plunger down slowly. This plunger allows the water to pass through but pushes the grounds down to the bottom and wedges them down there between the glass and the mesh like plunger sieve.

The jug on this is nice and strong and I don't worry and much about it smashing at the slightest touch or bump. It makes two large mugs of coffee but if you are going to be drinking from those proper little coffee cups you will of course get a good few cups out of one brew. When finished I empty the grounds into the compost bin and then wash all parts on warm soapy water. I tend to leave this to air dry and it cleans up perfectly.

This is a great way to have a quick cup of real coffee with minimal fuss and effort.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A reliable cafetiere, I just dislike the stumpy design

      WHAT IS IT?

The original Classic cafetiere by La Cafetiere.

      IS IT ANY GOOD?

I've used it for six years and I say it's the nicest to use even though not the most attractive. The chrome lid and finish are too garish for the squat shape and the jutting plastic handle looks the wrong shape. I keep it in the cupboard as I prefer my more attractive Bodum cafetiere to be on display.

The glass jug is strong and can withstand minor everyday bumps and knocks, it cleans easily in hot soapy water and the chrome has kept its shine. The lip on the jug is short and pours well, there's no slopping or splashing of coffee and no dribbles when I finish pouring into my cup.

The plunger depresses smoothly and the force of the mesh on the ground coffee releases a beautiful aroma. The cafetiere holds 2 1/2 mugs of coffee and the thick glass will keep them warm long enough for you to enjoy your drinks even if drinking on your own. I sometimes swirl hot water round the jug before making the coffee as this will keep it hotter for slightly longer, this does work and is a useful trick if like me you like to make up a full cafetiere for yourself.

The feet of this Classic cafetiere are quite slippy so you need to make sure the surface is dry before filling the cafetiere with hot water, I saw mine slide for at least 2cm on an unnoticed tiny puddle and from then on have been very wary about the stability of the cafetiere, avoiding using this one when the children are running around during the day.
