      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A permanent addition to my make up bag.

I'm a member of RedditGifts, a companion site to reddit that essentially organises mass Secret Santa swaps several times a year. One of the more recent ones they did was a make up exchange. The general idea is that someone would send a little care package of various makeup bits and bobs to me, and I would send one on to someone else. This is always quite fun, as without knowing each others tastes, you can end up with some very surprising items - or in this case, an item you're not quite sure what to do with.

I had never, before receiving this, used a primer in my life. I didn't know I was meant to, having never been particularly adept at makeup. I'd just slap on some foundation, layer on the lippy, and I was ready to rock and roll. But apparently, primer is a pretty good idea - essentially it prepares your skin, mattifying it and giving a good base for applying foundation, helping to ensure a smooth even look. This particular primer, made by Witch, has some additional added features - it contains Witch Hazel extract to protect the skin from spots and blemishes, and it forms a protective barrier between your skin and the foundation, stopping it from clogging up your pores and causing nasty spots. It also claims to be soothing and hydrating.

The primer, which is dispensed through a pump action lid (two pumps should be sufficient) is white in colour, with a whipped creamy texture. It doesn't really have much of a smell to it, and is easy to rub into the skin, blending in well, and leaving no sticky residue and no marks on the skin. I can't see any visible difference to my skin when it's just primed, but I do find that it does keep my make up properly in place once applied - I particularly notice the difference around my eyes, my shadow doesn't tend to bunch in the creases as much.

This costs between £4 and £5 in chemists and supermarkets, and is pretty widely available. I do think I will buy this, or another primer, once this runs out, as I do find using one makes a difference to how long my makeup lasts on my skin, and I imagine not having to constantly top up and reapply will actually save me money in the long run. I don't know how good this has been at preventing spots, since I tend to only get them very rarely and then as a reaction to stress, but I have noticed my skin is a little less oily since using this (it's been around a month now).

It's not a product I would have picked up myself, since I wasn't aware of what a primer was or why I might need one, but I'm glad my makeup secret santa sent me this. 5 stars!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Skin primer

        Witch skin clearing primer

I like to use a primer before applying make up and when I was recently I superdrug I decided to try this one out.

** what is it and what does it do? **

This has natural antibacterial actives which prepare the skin for foundation, thus allowing for smooth and even application. It also apparently creates an invisible shield to help protect skin from make up which can cause or aggravate spots. It also helps calm and soothe the skin, hydrating and drawing away excess oils. It contains witch hazel extract
to protect skin from the causes of blemishes.
The product is Fragrance free and Dermatalogically tested which I would expect from Witch products.

        **product and packaging...**

The product comes packaged inside a box which has all of the information and instructions on the back of the box. Inside the box I find a plastic 30 ml bottle with a pull off push back on lid. When I take off the lid I find that the product is dispensed by pushing down on the pump action dispenser. When I push down I get a good amount of the stuff with one push and usually find that two presses of the pump gives me enough for complete application to my face.

The product itself is white with no discernible smell and whilst not especially creamy it's creamier than a gel and so when it's applied to my skin, it does make it feel moisturised and ready for make up. It is easy to blend into my skin and leaves no sticky residue. Because it states that edit helps to avoid excess oils I was expecting it to be drier than it is and less moisturising, but this is in fact very moisturising without being at all greasy. It does make my make up a lot easier to apply and seems to make it last longer.

        **price and availability...**

The product is widely available in chemists and supermarkets. I bought mine for £4.49 from superdrug which is good value for money and not likely to break the bank.

        **verdict**

I like this product. It is easy to apply and leaves my skin feeling very ready for make up. When I have applied the primer I find that my make up is easier to apply and after application it does seem to keep my make up in place for longer.

I'm not sure whether it prevents spots as I don't especially get spots but even though my skin is quite dry I found that it suits my skin and gave it a bit more of a moisture boost before make up.

I would definitely buy this again; non greasy and effective, it certainly isn't expensive and for me just as effective as some more expensive products

        Thanks for reading

        Daniela xx

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

one of the best make up primers available that looks after your skin as well as your makeup.

I've gone through a handful of primers in the past couple of years and it is always frustrating going through the expensive process of finding the right one. I've tried approximately eight primers that I can remember so far and there have only been two that have proven to be a winner for me. This being my most recent purchase and my all time favourite.

I was sceptical as to how a primer could actually help treat and protect the skin from any breakouts, but since I found this primer for half price a couple of months ago on the superdrug web store I decided to give it a go. I got it for just over £3 at the time but it usually retails between £6-7 which is still a very reasonable price for how great of a product it is. It contains witch hazel extract so this contributes helping heal and protect your skin from infections and break outs, though of course stop you from getting break outs completely, because let's face it, we'd need a miracle product to have constantly perfect looking skin, but it does make your skin more radiant and clearer, and I should know, I still have teenage skin at 21 years old!

The primer itself is fragrance free, which I didn't actually expect since it was by witch so I therefore expected some sort of fragrance to be there, but it smells of nothing which is great. It is also completely oil free, there is no greasy residue and doesn't make your skin feel gross and clogged up, it is genuinely so soft to touch and very easy to apply with no marking or uneven patches appearing during or after applying the primer.

The primer is 30ml which is usually one of the most common sizes, (I know that rimmel have a similar amount which is at a similar price) it also features a pump action bottle rather than a squeeze tube so it is mess free and you don't have to screw any lids back on afterwards. The primer also feels like a very subtle and gentle moisturiser as I've experienced less dry skin whilst using this product and that is saying something considering it is winter time and weather can be very harsh to your skin.

The longest I've worn makeup for whilst using this product was actually on Christmas day from about 9am to 6pm and my makeup was still in place and still very smooth looking. It also helps that you accompany the primer with a suitable foundation and ex foliate your skin beforehand (I use dream matte mousse and st ives apricot scrub) if necessary, then you will have fresh looking skin for a considerable amount of hours.

I would highly recommend this as it is kind and gentle to your skin and holds your makeup in place like it says it should. For a small price this is a great make up staple that you really do need in your bag!
