Avalon Organics Vitamin C Vitality Facial Serum
Avalon Organics may be a company that is new to many readers of this review, but it is a company that I value, both for its ethical nature, and for the organic and paraben free products that it produces. An American company, with its customer services centre based in Colorado, you can easily purchase their products in The States where they are available everywhere, but in the UK you do have to search a little more to find them. Recently Amazon have been stocking them, and Ebay too, but you can also find them online from health food stores and natural cosmetics websites. Your local health food store may also carry certain lines too, and Waitrose and Ocado certainly sell some of the toiletries including their shower gel and shampoo.
The subject of my review today is the Vitamin C Vitality Facial Serum which is part of a collection of products which are anti-aging and brightening. At my age, almost 52, I am trying to hold back time, and have recently purchased quite a lot of skin care products which have more moisturising qualities, and in particular which try to protect the skin from the signs of aging. This serum is bursting with anti-oxidants including vitamin c, lemon bioflavanoids, and white tea which are said by the company to promote collagen and elastin production and also even out skin tone.
The range of products which include this serum all have the same aims in mind. It is said by Avalon that even minimal exposure to UV light can cause damage increasing wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, freckles and sunspots. They claim that the type of vitamin c used in their products helps to minimise this damage, neutralising free radicals and ensuring that the skin looks younger and brighter.
This claim is really important to me as there is a strong family history of facial skin cancer in my family, both my parents have the condition, and my father in particular has an ongoing battle to keep it under control. I also love the summer though, and am concerned to read studies which are now saying that we lack Vitamin D as a nation. This important vitamin, now also seen as a hormone, is made by the skin in the presence of sunlight, so you have to balance risk with an important ingredient which has endless benefits in the body and is even thought to be cancer protective.
The serum is presented in a small bottle inside a cardboard box and retails for £10.16 for 30mls. The bottle has a pump dispenser and this allows you to use the perfect amount. The serum is a pale peach shade with a light milky consistency and it has a beautiful fragrance of orange which is just gorgeous. I have to say for me the scent is just so beautiful that even if it had limited benefits I would still consider using it as it really is a treat. It absorbs so easily into the skin. I use it in the morning after cleansing, and if my skin is especially dry I will follow by the Avalon Vitamin C Renewal Cream which is another excellent product in the range. Whether you apply this extra layer or not doesn't affect the ability of this serum to perform very well as a make up base. In fact as a primer it is excellent and I find that foundation goes on so easily afterwards. I also apply this serum at bedtime, and the remaining product that is on my hands then acts as a moisturiser. You are then treated to a wonderful scent of orange as you drift off to sleep which I love.
What I have noticed over the last twelve months since I first started using the serum is that my skin has a brightness that has imparted a fresher and more radiant look to my skin. It has even been noticed by my husband who has commented it on several occasions through the winter, so there must be some good benefits. I also think it is smoother in texture and softer, but I have not seen any reduction in wrinkles or freckles at all, but of course it may be preventing new ones so time will tell on that one. Regarding the fresh look this gives I would say that this really shows through even after make-up has been applied, so if you like a dewy and radiant look this is an ideal product to use as a skin primer in the morning.
The product, as with all their ranges, has not been tested on animals and is suitable for vegetarians to use. As I said earlier, the lack of harsh chemicals together with the use of essential oils and natural ingredients is a real positive as far as I am concerned.
This brings me on to the subject of negative points. I think I would have to point out that this product is not inexpensive, and I find that if I use it twice a day I will need to re-purchase after about 8 weeks so you are looking at £5 a month. I also would love to see this made in a larger bottle, as although this does last 8 weeks and is an ideal travel size, there could be economies regarding price if it was available in a large container.
Overall though I adore this product - it would be in my top 10 of all time skincare products. I also feel that all the range that accompanies this, from toners and cleansers, to moisturisers and eye creams are all beautiful without exception. There is something so uplifting about the orange oil fragrance, it seems to be mood enhancing and perks up the mornings reminding me of sunny summer days. A product which I highly recommend especially for more mature skin.
