Neal's Yard Rose Body Cream
Neal's Yard is a company that I admire very much, and despite the price tag on their products I buy one every now and then as a special treat. (As you can see from my other reviews I am a bit of a fan). Neal's Yard have built a business based on supplying natural and organic skincare and remedies based on natural ingredients, including the more controversial homeopathy.
I still like the shops and their feel of an old chemist or apothecary, the blue glass jars block out sunlight and keep the products fresh and the jars can be recycled in store.
The body cream is an incredibly dense moisturiser, almost like a balm or a wax. It wasn't at all what I was expecting, and I wasn't that impressed with having to scoop hard to dig a big blob out, getting at all under my nails (yuck). The balm smooths onto the skin and takes three or four rubs to sink in. A little blob unexpectedly covers a big surface area of skin. After applying, it makes the skin feel sticky and tacky for a moment (which is a bit annoying) but then magically soft. The rose fragrance is extremely strong and intense, like an essential oil. I love the scent of roses, but I can imagine if you didn't like strong scents it could be really overpowering.
I would describe the body cream as quite an 'extreme' moisturiser, suited really only to very dry areas of the skin like feet, elbows and knees. It's perfect for these chapped areas because it softens the skin up so much, and the thick, rich texture penetrates any cracked of chapped areas of skin. It really does transform chapped hands, and is especially suited for winter weather protection.
However, I was expecting this to be more like a traditional body cream, which I could apply all over after getting out of the shower. I tried this a few times but it took so long to scoop the waxy cream out of the jar and rub it all in. I just don't have time and prefer a more runny cream that can just be put straight on in around 5 minutes. I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting a product much more like the Body Shop's body butter, and that was what I needed at the time.
The product is still good for any distressed areas of skin, and I do use it frequently. I think the problem is with the description and labelling rather than the product itself, so I have chosen to give it 2 stars.
The cream is available from Neal's Yard online at £25.10 for 150g. When I purchased this product last year it was available in a smaller sized tub. It's a shame that they have increased the size of this product so dramatically, as £25 is a very expensive outlay for a body cream!
Overall I would recommend getting a good everyday moisturiser for the body, rather than spending a lot of money on this one. This is useful for extra dry areas of skin only.
