Risk is a popular game among my friends. We all take pride in forging our nations and equal pride in crushing eachothers vast empires. I'm suprised none of us dream of world domination. -The game- Risk puts you and your friends as leaders of the free world. You all start in your own little space and must expand and defeat eachother in a campaign for global conquest. Each turn you gain units dependent on how much of the board you own. Typically the winner is the last player standing but allied victories are possible just a little rare. Your units are represented by coloured army men each player having a different colour. -The good- Risk is a very simple game to pick up, mastering it? That will take time. The regions are quite ballanced, that is to say that each continent has multiple points of access. Making it difficult to wall yourself in. Typically speaking if your at that point then your close to winning already. The game comes with more than enough pieces for each player and even then it's easy to get new player sets online. -the bad- Unless your lucky enough to have a good group of friends then you won't often play this to its full potential. Risk plays best with 4-6 people. Plus risk is a very time consuming game, especially for those who have been taken out early on. -The summary- Given you have the players and the time risk is a brilliant engaging game. I wouldn't reccomend it to everyone however. The time consuming side of things will put some off
***Introduction*** For those not in the know, Risk is a strategy board game with a small percentage of chance. It is an excellent entry way into more complex boardgames and wargames. The main purpose of the game is essentially to take over the world before the other players do. It is for 2-6 players so you should find you can play at nearly anytime, the only downside to 2-player is that there is also a 'dummy' player who both teammates have to act as which can detract away from the gaming pleasure. The best number of players centers around 3-4 players, I've found that any less is a bit stale. More players and the play begins to get longer than it already is. The game itself can last anywhere from 1 and a half hours upto 3. ***Mechanics*** The game itself is turn based and consists of moving units (plastic miniatures)and defending and attacking to gain territories. The more territories you gain, the more men you get each turn thus making each attack and defence more and more powerful. Each battle is solved through a fast paced and simplistic combat mechanicsm (few and far between these days). This mechanism is summarised (extremely summarised) below. Combat (which is the main mechanic of the game) is done with Dice and the more men you have, the more dice you use. It is not entirely chance, remember this is a strategy game, NOT snakes and ladders. ***Conclusion*** As a boardgamer myself, I rank this game quite highly even with against the more esoteric games in my collection. It has stood the test of time and the theme never tires. It is an excellent gateway into boardgaming territory (Risk joke) and should hopefully see you thinking a bit more than you would just blasting people in the face on the playstation.
If I had to compile a list of my top three board games ever I would say that this one, Risk would probably come in at number two with Monopoly just edging it. I was first introduced to risk by my dad at around the age of ten. We had many a happy afternoon sat round the table battling for world domination. Although my dad always used to win I always enjoyed playing and when I got a little older I even started to win a few. So if you are unfamiliar with the game, let me tell you a little bit about it. Risk is a board game where the idea of the game is basically to achieve world domination. The board has a map on it and the major countries are there with clear boundaries. There is also a deck of cards with a country each on them. When the game starts the cards are dealt out and you have your starting countries. You are also given a certain amount of armies, you must divide these up between your countries. Then the game can begin. Each player takes it in turn to attack other countries. To do this you simply roll the dice to determine which armies are going to win. There are more complicated rules of course but this is the basic concept. Much of the game is based on luck but there is also a serious amount of skill involved. The idea is to try and conquer entire continents and then you are given bonus armies to add to your existing armies at the start of the next turn. There are variations of the game like you can play the mission cards where you have specific missions to try and achieve rather than trying to take over the entire world. This is usually a shorter version of the game. Playing the entire world domination version of the game usually takes around two hours although sometimes it can be even longer than this. I think the reason I enjoy this game so much is that no game is ever the same twice. There are certainly more obvious methods of winning but sometimes these just don't work and sometimes you have to think outside the box. If the dice are not on your side then you really have no chance. The game is great fun to play and really gets you thinking. Overall I would say this is a superb game that both children and adults can enjoy, certainly one that I have always enjoyed.
