      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      The BD550 is cheap and does its job well!

      I thought I could need a valuable blue-ray player because you can get BluRays everywhere and I could get rid of my old DVD player. So I got this one for a price of £50 on the Internet.

      Features:
      The BD440 is gives you the possibility to stream Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Pandora, and CinemaNow. Besides you can play music or videos, view and pictures by connecting an USB drive.
      I'd say it loads all your media rather quickly, depending on the amount and size.
      Furthermore, the player looks valuable and stylish due to its design. I like it!
      So the BluRay player itself offers a lot of useful features, but I think it would be better if an HDMI cable would be within the scope of supply.

      Usage:
      The installation and the first usage is a bit tricky and not that easy but after some time I had it all figured out. Both user interface and the layout of sites like YouTube look brilliant and are easy to work with.
      The image quality is as great as I had expected: It's extremely clean and well defined. I also think this is the most important aspect about a BluRay player.

      Conclusion:
      The BD550 offers many features, looks great, gives a nice picture quality, the only negative aspect is he missing HDMI cable. But for a price of £50, that's okay.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      A great cheap Bluray player

      The problem I find with buying these type of things, is that technology is moving so fast, that I always find it a little tricky when buying players that I expect to last a long while. So I did buy this player with anticipation last year, and hopefully there will be no new type of technology coming out in the near future which is of a higher quality than BluRay.

      Price
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      This isn't the most pricey BluRay player and there is a lot of competition out there right now which is driving the prices down. I didn't want to spend a huge amount and you can find this for £50 online, which I think is a great price.
      Quality
      ~~~~~~~~

      Considering it is not particular expensive, I have to say that the quality is very good, but the issue I have here is how much is down to the player, and how much is down to the expensive TV that I have. The sharpness with Bluray is particularly impressive, especially when comparing to DVD. I find it to be a lot crisper and particularly with high budget special effect movies you can see the clarity and the high refresh rate. Generally with these players the bigger your screen, the bigger the difference you will notice. If you watched a bluray and a DVD on a 15inch TV I really don't think you will see much difference.

      Design
      ~~~~~~~~~~
      It is a pretty simplistic looking player, if you have a black TV, then this will match up well. Also is quite compact and slim but this is expected with most players, not just BluRay but even older DVD players.
      Extra Features
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

      There is a USB Port, and most people these days have USB sticks which means that you can use the player as a port straight to your TV. This means that you can play back video files, audio and music amongst other things. Also it can apparently upgrade the quality of DVD's, however I haven't particularly been able to notice the difference between playing the DVD on this player and a normal DVD player.

      Overall
      ~~~~~~~~~~~
      For the price you can't really go wrong here, it gets the job as would be expected. I would give this four stars, just cause although there isn't anything wrong, I reserve my five stars for items that are really outstanding which is not a bracket that this bluray player I can categorize in.
      Advantages
      Disadvantages
      4/5 a good player but complicated features.
      ==Price and Availability==
      After owning my old DVD player for quite some time, about a year ago I decided to swap to a new Blu- Ray Player. As I didn't really know what I was looking for I asked my brother for some help and he recommended the player he owned so after a little looking around for the best deals I bought the LG BD550 for about £90 online. It's a lot cheaper now though and can be picked up for about £50 on eBay, which is obviously a great price.
      ==LG BD550==
      I was very impressed with my new Blu- Ray player when I took it out of the box. It's glossy black which matches with my television, it's a very sleek and slim design and looks really high quality and is certainly very modern. The player is easy to set up but it's worth knowing that there's no HDMI cable included in the box which I think is a bit unfair. This meant I couldn't use my new player straight away but I ordered a cable from play.com for a couple of pound so at least it wasn't a big expense. The Blu- Ray player has a range of features including the ability to access the internet, upscale normal DVD's and play back videos, music and images via the USB port.
      ==My Experience==
      Apart from my little snag with the HDMI cable the rest of the set up was easy, just a case of getting it out of the box and plugging it in. It does pretty much work like this as the Blu- Ray player comes with its own remote but if you want to use your normal TV remote to change the volume then it does have to be programmed but this is pretty easy to do with the instruction manual. Although I probably don't use the whole range of services available for using the internet with this player we do occasionally watch YouTube clips through it. It is possible to stream video and music from the internet but this is too complicated for me and generally we do it through the PS3.
      Now for the important bit, how does watching a Blu- Ray film differ from a regular DVD? When first watching a Blu- Ray film I was shocked by just how bright and defined the picture was. It really is completely crystal clear and the images really seem to pop out of the screen almost. When it comes to up scaling normal DVD's I am a little more sceptical, I don't think the difference is that noticeable the colours just seem a bit brighter.
      ==Overall==
      Overall, I've been impressed with the difference using the LG BD550 Blu- Ray player makes, the image quality is certainly a lot better and gives a better viewing experience. The additional features are good but as I just watch films I don't really make the most of them as they aren't that easy to use so maybe this player isn't that great for the average film watcher.
      Advantages
      Disadvantages
      A nice, sleek, lightweight product. Recommended
      We got this along with our new LG TV, but although the picture quality of our new TV is a vast improvement on that of our old one, there is also a marked difference between the quality when watching TV and the quality when watching a DVD or blu-ray. Obviously the quality is best when watching blu-ray, especially when there is movement on screen- it really shows off the sharpness and clarity of the images. Having said that, the quality of DVDs is also automatically upgraded, so even old episodes of Friends look better on this new blu-ray player.
      It's actually quite strange watching Friends on this blu-ray player because you end up watching whole episodes in the style Joey's soap opera is usually shown in. This is apparently because blu-ray players play DVDs and blu-rays at the same shutter speed they were originally filmed at. I suppose that's why movement looks particularly sharp and clear.
      This model doesn't have any particular features, though it is very lightweight and slim line, so it looks quite elegant alongside the TV. It is also possible to control the blu-ray player with the TV remote, if you've also got an LG TV, which is a nice, handy feature.
      It's very easy to work out how to use the appliance, and it's a doddle to plug the wires in to the TV. You just need to make sure you've got an HDMI cable to be able to do this- they're relatively cheap if you buy them at Morrison's or Wilkinson (about £7), although at Curry's, where we bought the TV and blu-ray player, they charge £15 for one. Definitely worth shopping around!
      The remote is very clearly laid out and simple to use- I tend only to use stop, play, skip and forward or back, but these are easy to find. The only problem I have is that we have a big coffee table in between the TV and our sofa, and I end up having to bend my arm at some awkward angles to make the player respond to the remote, since the infra-red can't beam through solid wood. That's probably not a product fault though- more to do with laziness on my part! The remote only takes one AAA battery, so it won't be at all expensive to run.
      The only thing that does annoy me about it sometimes is that I can never get the disc holder to open first time. I don't know if it's just my tactics in opening the thing, but a press the open/close button and I get the nice, friendly 'hello' greeting, and then nothing more. I then have to press it a few more times before it actually seems to register what I'm asking it to do. I don't know; maybe I'm pressing the button too many times and confusing it or something, but that is one thing I don't like about this model.
      Aside from this one little irritation though, everything else about this blu-ray player seems to very good, and very good value for money as well, considering it's currently £65 on Amazon. If you want simple good quality at a reasonable price then this is probably the make and model to go for.
      Advantages
      Disadvantages
      A very good but basic Blu Ray player.
      I purchased the LG BD550 after a little bit of research on the internet. After reading a large amount of good reviews on this player I decided I would purchase it. I had never had a Blu Ray player before (or watched one for that matter!) and I had only ever played DVDs through my Xbox360. It cost me around £70 at the time from amazon. When the player first arrived I took it out of the box and to be honest it looked quite long and chunky. I set it up and placed it under my 22' TV where it fit very snug. The player is probably about 20 inches in width which isnt as bad as I first thought.
      The Blu Ray players itself is very simple to use. It is easy to navigate and choose what you wish to do (play from disc, memory stick, change settings etc). LG also have a very nice feature for this Blu Ray which allows you to use one controller for the TV and for the Blu Ray player (if your TV is LG make). It makes things easier rather the needing two seperate remote controls!
      The Blu Ray player produces a brilliant picture and improves the sound quality of any DVD's (compared to a DVD played on a standard DVD player). For the price the LG BD550 is available at you can't really go wrong. It doesnt have any stand out features but what it does offer is a cheap way of watching Blu Ray films, and it improves the quality of a standard DVD. For me its a must buy for anyone purchasing a Blu Ray player for the first time!
      Amazing cheap blu-ray player, definite must-buy
      This is an amazing blu-ray player, I originally decided to wait a little when blu-ray players came out because the price was really expensive, but when I was browsing Amazon for anything because I got bored and had some money I wanted to spend, I saw this and read the features and brought it right there and then when it came, it was quite difficult to set up, because I wanted it connecting to the internet. When I put my blu-ray disc (The Hangover) in the picture quality was stunning it blew me away, I could see every little detail. The sound quality was also amazing, I did not think that the sound quality would be that much improved from DVD but I was certainly proven wrong. Overall if you are looking for a cheap, amazing blu-ray player with amazing functions I would definitely recommend you buying this blu-ray player.
      Advantages
      Disadvantages
      Great overall blu ray player, better than average!
      Which one of the thousands of blu ray players should I chose from now a days? The blue one, the black one? Or perhaps I should chose one by brand name? I will agree, picking out the "right" blu ray disc player is definitely not the easiest task to be accomplished! What I can tell you though is the Lg BD-550 is a very good blu ray player with tons on extra features! One of the features that I mostly enjoy about my Lg BD-550 is the "YouTube" capability. I used to turn my computer on only to watch one two minutes YouTube movie. Now, I mostly use my Lg BD-550 blu Ray player to play YouTube movies.
      Other than YouTube, the Lg BD-550 offres many apps such as picasa picture viewer for Google as well as the weahter channel app. Unfortunately, the apps test come with the Lg BD-550 are the only apps available (for now) on the blu ray player. It would have been nice if Lg could have made an app store for the Lg BD-550 so consumers could download useful apps for themselves, this may be in the near future, who knows!
      Overall, I was very satisfisfied with the Lg blu ray players image quality. I was able to enjoy high definition 1080 P movies in 5.1 surround sound. From the Lg blu ray player, I only have one HDMI cable going to my receiver then to my tv. The image and sound were both crystal clear!
      I highly recommend the Lg blu ray player to anyone wanting to upgrade to high def, yes the Lg blu ray player will play standard definition 480 P DVD movies.
      Advantages
      Disadvantages
      Easy to use, fast upload and fantastic definition
      Being as the title suggest a techno-phobic and a philistine when it comes to new technology; I still own a Sony Walkman, VHS player and cassettes! I invested in a new blu-ray to go with the TV, not actually knowing what I was looking at I asked a few friends and the man at Currys which he would recommended within my price range. Quite surprisingly he didn't try and up-sell me to an all singing all dancing model!!
      I can certainly say you can tell the difference when watching HD as opposed to the regular DVD; the images are far crisper and the load time for movie is a lot faster then with my DVD player. The set up manual which came with was straight forward; the actual player came very well packaged and when removed was super slim, light and a rather nice shiny black colour. I would say if you do go for a blu-ray to go LG; well LG for everything as its an amazing brand and I've never had a problem with any of their products, the only time I did was with an old mobile and they were quick and friendly in sending out a replacement.
      Advantages
      Disadvantages
      blu ray is better
      I was a bit slow to upgrade to blu ray from my old dvd player, but now that i have i am glad that i did as you can really tell the difference.
      I have found from watching hd tv channels that the scale up in picture quality hasn't been to significant for me to really rave about, but after watch movies through my blu ray player the difference is much greater.
      So if you were like me and thought 'it looks the same' when watching bbc hd, then don't be put off from getting a blu ray player as it is much more advanced.
      The picture quality from the LG is great and images a much more defined and from watching 'kick ass' the detail of the sky scrapers really shows them off, and you notice a level of detail you didn't realise you were missing out on before.
      It is also really easy to use with simple self explanatory set up menus if you need to change from the default setting.
      Blu ray players are typically quite a bit bigger than normal dvd players, and it is the same with this one, but you soon get used to the size and it isn't a bother at all.
      Overall this is a great product and for 70 quid it is quite good value for a blu ray.
      Advantages
      Disadvantages
      Great DVD player, lots of features but most importantly, plays Blu-ray well!
      My trusty old DVD player finally gave up the ghost at the end of last year. It had a good run, almost 10 years! For a replacement I decided something current to go with my new-ish full HD LG TV. With that in mind, I turned to LG Blu-ray players. My only reason for leaning towards LG is that my TV is LG and I like things to match!!
      The one I went for was the LG BD550 Network Blu-ray disk player. You can find them from £80 - £115 on line. First of all, it's all packed snugly and safely. Taking it out you can see how narrow it is, a fraction of the size of my old player. Very cool and slim line!! It's a polished black colour, which goes nicely with my TV! Also inside the box is an instruction booklet and information about the network streaming abilities which I'll come to. There is however, no HDMI cable which you will need if you will be playing on an HD TV. Incidentally, I have two HDMI cables, one was Tesco value, £5 and the other was branded and cost almost £30, and there is no difference what so ever in the picture quality!!! This will not work with non HD TV's as there is no scart jack.
      Installing the player was easy. One plug in to the mains and the HDMI cable in to the TV. Now as my TV was the same brand, my TV remote worked straight away with the player without having to be synced or anything. Very handy as I now have a spare remote!! I'd gone out and bought a Blu-ray especially to play as a test!! I went with Pirates of the Caribbean!! Well I didn't think the improved picture quality would be that noticeable but I was so wrong! Very sharp lines, vibrant colour! Even the sound quality has added clarity! I was very impressed, this was certainly HD quality!!
      Other features on the player include a USB port for you to play picture slide shows and music straight from your device. It also has Standard DVD Up-Scaling. This means your player will automatically improve the output picture quality of all non Blu-ray discs, so there is no need to go and replace your entire DVD library now that you have a Blu-ray player. It also brags Express Reaction startup. It claims to be mere seconds from putting your disc in to playing it, however, I can't say that it is noticeably quick! Or slow for that matter.
      The player also boasts Netcast Entertainment Access. Something unique to LG. You will require a high speed internet connection for this as well as a Netcast enabled LG TV. This feature allows you to stream music, films, internet videos & radio and TV widgets direct to your screen through your internet connection. I've yet to make this happen on mine as yet due to information on the website being poor!!
      But I got this to play Blu-ray DVDs not to stream internet content, that having been said, this is a great DVD player, small and stylish looking with full HD 1080p playback quality. Combined with the superior audio performance, it really does give a fantastic viewing experience.
