      An inexpensive chocolate covering which doesn't taste awful, does the job!

      I was getting the ingredients bought to make some very naughty chocolate traybake (the one with crushed up digestives, a tonne of butter and golden syrup, cocoa powder and raisins...sooo naughty but my gosh it's good!) and was looking for some chocolate to melt to cover the top. Now I'm a bit of a chocolate snob and usually go Cadbury's all the way or Green and Blacks but as I'm trying to save money for impending baby, these brands just weren't an option so I perused the supermarket shelves for a cheaper but still hopefully tasty option. I spotted the familiar spoon logo of Silver Spoon on a rather large block of chocolate and saw that the product was called 'Chocolate flavour cake covering' my instant thought was 'hmm, chocolate flavour covering isn't actually chocolate' but then I saw the price. In Tesco, it retails for 50p for 500g (this was a rolled back price, the label on the shelf said usually £1.39) so, being a bit of a skinflint at the moment, in the basket it went. I'm usually a bit skeptical about chocolate that i'd consider to be cooking chocolate. It tastes cheap and more like candy chocolate than proper chocolate lovers chocolate and I just hoped that I hadn't bought something which would spoil the taste of my lovely traybake! The packet states that it's ideal for melting and gives a glossy finish to cakes. When it came to me using it, I broke it up into squares (it comes, as most blocks of chocolate, marked in squares or rectangles to be more precise) and broke one little piece in half to have a nibble to taste. I wasn't wholly disappointed, in fact I was pleasantly surprised. Although it certainly didn't taste like good quality chocolate (it doesn't profess to be so what more could I expect really), it didn't have that awful powdery taste that cooking chocolate can have. It was smooth in texture and had a reasonable chocolatey flavour, not cheap tasting at all although not expensive tasting either. It says dark chocolate flavour and I couldn't really have said unless I'd known that it was dark chocolate. It didn't have that bittersweet taste that Bournville has for example but I'd have to taste the milk chocolate flavour to truly compare. In my opinion, it tasted more like milk chocolate. I broke up the entire bar and put it in the microwave to melt. It says on the packet that it can be melted in a bowl over a pan of hot water or in the microwave on full power for 1.5 minutes. Now I assume that that's for the entire packet, it perhaps could be a little clearer. I have burnt chocolate in the microwave in the past so I opted for whacking it on full power and watching it til it started to turn glossy. This didn't take long, around a minute. I took it out of the microwave and stirred to melt any last lumps away. I was pleased that the bowl didn't feel scorching hot so I wouldn't feel worried about using this with children and the chocolate had melted quickly, smoothly and to a very runny consistency. In the past, when I've melted chocolate, it's been a race against the clock to get it spread onto whatever I'd made before it set again in the bowl. This wasn't a problem at all with this chocolate. I poured it over my traybake and it was very runny which worked well for this particular recipe. It was easily spreadable into all the nooks and crannies and looked very glossy. I had a lick of the spoon (of course!) at the end and it tasted very nice, like melted chocolate should taste. If I were covering buns or a cake with this I'd be a bit concerned that it'd run over the edges and make a bit of a mess due to the thinness of the melted chocolate so be warned! When I came to wash the bowl i'd used to melt the chocolate in, the remaining chocolate which coated the bowl had set but it washed off easily with hot soapy water. The traybake went into the fridge to set overnight and set well, tasting just as i'd hoped it would, like chocolate should taste, not like a cheap chocolate flavoured covering. Perhaps this was because it was now being chomped along with the other ingredients in the traybake! For 50p, I was very pleased with this product. We'll see what my colleagues think of it when they eat it tomorrow!!!

        Delish Dark Chocolate Cake Covering

        I made some fairy cakes with my sisters the other day and when they was cooling my 10 year old sister said she wanted to cover them in chocolate. I only had a small bar of Dairy Milk in the cupboard and she wasn't having that so we popped to Sainsburys to get some of their Basics chocolate to cover them with. I'm getting a bit obsessed with the new Silver Spoon baking stuff so when I saw they did a block of dark chocolate cake covering I brought some to try out...... I might as well because I'm trying the rest of their range out gradually! lol It smells dead strong when you open the pack and it's weird because it smells like proper good quality dark chocolate and not fake cake covering. You melt it in the normal way in a bowl over another bowl of hot water, I thought it melted very quick and the smell as you're stirring it is yummy. When it's all been melted down you get a glossy looking chocolate covering that looks more like proper chocolate. It's dead easy to spread onto the cakes, I used a spoon to put it on top of the cake and then a knife to spread it. We put it on quite thick because I'd melted the whole block and didn't want to waste any, one thing I noticed is that it doesn't set majorly quick so you haven't got to rush too much to get all the chocolate onto the cakes before it starts going hard again. The flavour of this cake covering on the cakes was delish, being dark chocolate it made the cakes taste more grown up than if I'd used milk chocolate or pink icing. It tastes like proper chocolate as well, it hasn't got a madly fake taste and I reckon if you was to give someone a cake and they didn't know it was cake covering instead of proper chocolate then they'd never guess until you told them. Recommended..... for grown up cakes that look and taste wicked!!!
