      A great musical toy

For my youngest daughters first Christmas my Auntie thought it would be a great idea to provide her with a number of musical toys so we ended up with this trumpet, a tambourine and a accordion all for babies of course.

The trumpet is made by Vtech and is suitable for babies from 6 months of age, although our daughter was only 3 months when she got it so we would play with it for her and let her see and listen to it. You can buy this toy on the high street and in the usual places such as Amazon and in supermarkets and it seems to cost anywhere from £8 to £10.

The toy is of course made to look like a trumpet, it has a bright oval shape with a hole in the middle for your child to put their hand through to hold it, on top of this is the bright yellow trumpet main part. The orange part has embossed musical notes on it and the end of the trumpet has stars embossed on it giving your child bits of texture to discover. The trumpet has a blue part to one side which on a real trumpet would be where you would blow and a bright blue friendly looking elephants head on the front and then finally three brightly coloured keys to push down saying do, ri and me.

The trumpet is all made of hard plastic so like most childrens toys of this type it is durable and made for the constant bashing around that it is going to get through play, my daughter did manage to hit herself over the head with it a couple of times before she learnt it was a hard toy.

To turn the toy on and off there is a button on the front of the toy and there is also a volume control giving two different volume levels which as any parent will know can be a godsend.

When you first turn the toy on the trumpet plays a little tune and when the elephant is pressed it states that the elephant likes to play and if you press the blue button on one side of the trumpet it plays a number of different tunes.

When your child plays with the toy the three buttons at the top flash as a reward for them, my daughter really seemed to like the flashing lights, when your child presses any of the three buttons on the top the toy will state which colour the button is or play do, ri, me, there is red, green and orange.

My daughter like I said was too young for this toy when she first got it but she responded to the flashing lights and all of the tunes that the toy makes. We started her playing with it by gently using her hand to press the buttons which she seemed to like. As my daughter got older and began sitting and playing with toys we found that she could play with this one easily as the buttons are all pretty easy to press and don't take too much pressure.

My daughter enjoyed playing with this toy and it was played with at least once a day for a couple of months before she began to loose interest in it.

I like that this toy introduces music as most of my family are musical so early introduction is a good thing in my opinion. I like thsat the toy started to teach colours even though at that age my daughter probably didn't take much in about the colours you never really know and it of course doesn't do any harm to introduce these things early. The toys battery life was great and we never had to change the batteries and of course like I said it is a durable toy which I think is needed in baby toys as they get flung without it being intentional. I would say this toy was enjoyed by my daughter but it didn't have the staying power of some toys as she got bored after a couple of months.

Encourage your little ones musical side!

I bought this for my daughter when she was about 4 months old. She loves toys that light up and flash so after a little trial in Tesco I bought this. It costs £9.97, although at the time I got it when toys had 25% off.

The trumpet is suitable for baby's aged 6 months and over. It has a bright orange handle which has imprints of musical notes on it making it easy to grip for little hands. The on/off switch is on the front of the toy, like most Vtech toys it has two volume levels. The trumpet features three coloured buttons at the top which are labelled Do Re and Mi, these flash when the trumpet is playing and they can also be pushed by your baby. There is an elephant button on the front of the trumpet and finally a blue button where the mouthpiece would be. The speaker for the trumpet is at the front.

The toy requires 2x AAA batteries.

The trumpet is designed to help your baby learn and eventually play it like a musical instrument.

When you turn this on you are greeted with a cheerful British voice, it sounds like a young boy, the trumpet plays a jingle when switched on a then a song about playing on a trumpet. If you push the elephant button it advises you that the elephant likes to play the trumpet either loudly or softly it alternates between the two, the volume level automatically switches between the two. If you push the blue button at the back of the trumpet it plays a series of tunes and sounds. Finally the top buttons play the notes Do Re or Mi, they also state the colour this again alternates as your little one plays. The trumpet also has a motion sensor so as long as it is being waved around it will continue to play music and flash. Like other Vtech toys it also switches itself off if it is not played with for a time, great for saving the batteries.

Initially when I first bought this for my daughter she was a little younger than the recommended age and she likes to watch it flash away while mummy or daddy pushed the buttons. As my daughter got older she started to push the buttons at the top while we held it for her. It is only since she got to about 7 months she really took an interest in this. She can hold it herself confidently with one hand (it is quite light) and push the buttons herself. The top buttons are really easy to push, she gets really excited as it starts to play and her little legs move to the music. This toy gets played with at least once a day, she has it while she is in her highchair she likes to wave it around with the one hand while eating her food using the other. The batteries are still going strong. We only use this on the first volume level as it is loud on the second level. Unlike other toys we have in the house this one isn't too repetative it spaces the songs and phrases out well so my daughter doesn't get bored either. It is also robust, it has taken several trips from the highchair onto the kitchen floor, it has also been launched from the sofa onto our laminate flooring and it doesn't have a single dent or scratch.

The only downside to this toy is you find yourself humming the tunes or even worse singing to them around the house, they are quite catchy and rather annoying when all you have been humming pop goes the weasel for half of the day! Still my daughter loves this and it is a great toy for the money!

5 out of 5 from us.
