I went to Mothercare and wanted to buy something that was fairly inexpensive for my daughter, just as a little 'extra' toy for her over the weekend. Just a little toy that she'd get some use from but wasn't bulky. I came across these alphabet blocks that were priced at £5 (I saved a whole penny at the till though as they were only £4.99!) and they seemed perfect for her - at that price, they looked great.
They come packaged in a cardboard box, it's not really ideal to store them in as it's quite flimsy, although we have plenty of storage boxes anyway so I'm sure we can find a home for them. There are 12 blocks in total - 3 are yellow, 3 are red, 3 are green and 3 are blue. They are quite big (around 4cm cubed) and are made of thick plastic. They feel quite sturdy really although they are hollow inside. Because of this, they weigh very little so are very easy for babies to pick up and play with. They are so light I don't need to worry that they're going to break anything in the room as they get knocked over and dropped on the floor a lot. They are designed so that each have 3 letters of the alphabet on and a picture of an animal embossed into the plastic too. They are risen up in the plastic, so that the shape of the letters and animals can be felt. The box states that they are suitable for babies who are 6 months and upwards and are designed to help with textures and their hand to eye co-ordination. The blocks can be stacked on top of one another and have some rippled sides for baby to feel as well as the letters and animal pictures.
I am very impressed with these blocks and I can see my daughter having hours of fun with them. In fact, we've only had them for a day and she's already had a lot of use from them! For £5, I don't think I could have chosen a better buy for her to play with and investigate. The blocks all have very rounded edges which makes me feel happy about her using them. She also seems to be mesmerised by the different colours of the blocks and likes to have them in her grasp to study. She isn't old enough to stack them on top of one another and I think that this is a few months away for us, but I can just build them up to show her how it's done and she will pick that up from watching me doing so in time. I think this just shows how much use we will get from them as she will still be able to enjoy them in a few months time when she is can stack them up for herself. She will also be able to sort them into colours, sort them into letters and spell words from them when she's a bit older. They'll be useful for teaching her the letters of the alphabet. For now though, she's getting enough use from them just by feeling them in her hands and looking at the pictures and letters on them. They seem to offer a wide range of uses.
I think these have been a fabulous purchase and are an excellent toy for any baby aged 6 months and over. They can provide hours of entertainment for very little money and are educational helping young children to learn the alphabet and spell simple words too.
