An essential buy for a teething baby

Like most mothers out there, when you're baby is in pain you'll move heaven and earth to make them feel better. Teething has to be something parents dread most as it can be such a miserable time for baby - sore, swollen gums, high temperature, rashes etc, not to mention the overwhelming clingy and fretful behaviour - it's a pretty distressing stage for all involved!

There are many teething remedies available for babies, but most are medicinal rather than natural, and just pain reducers rather than something to reduce the inflammation. A lot of babies can have almost constant pain from teething for many months, and parents don't want to be getting through bottles and bottles of medicine if they can avoid it.

One of the very few natural options is Baltic Amber, which has been used for centuries in Europe as a baby teething remedy. Wearing amber close to the skin as a necklace or anklet helps to relieve pain and calm baby without resorting to drugs. It's not just for babies either - adults can equally feel the effects, and can be beneficial for all sorts of aches and pains. Amber is a natural analgesic, and a resin not a stone. It feels warm to the touch, and works by releasing healing oils as it's warmed up on the skin. These oils have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties

When I first heard about baby amber teething necklaces, I bought one straight away as I felt I had nothing to lose with my baby who cried virtually all day long. I had tried all the other options - calpol, teething rings, teething gels and powders which had minimal effects, and the effect they did have were very short-lived. An amber necklace made sense as it's worn permanently, doesn't have to be dosed, and is drug free. It also has the added bonus of looking really pretty and cute.

Prior to using the necklace, my daughter had been constantly dribbling, had bright red cheeks and cried all the time. However within hours of putting the necklace on, her red cheeks faded, the dribbling all but stopped, and she was much calmer - it was like magic! We also had our first night where she slept at night between feeds, which was incredible (she previously cried and needed to be held all night). She wore her necklace constantly from 2 months of age until she was 2.5 years old, only taking off for baths and to clean occasionally with a damp cloth, and she cut every single tooth without us knowing until it was through! My youngest daughter who is nearly one, has been wearing hers since 4 months old with similar success - the only signs of teething from her have been increased clinginess as a tooth has emerged.

Amber teething necklaces come as beads individually knotted on cord that is designed to stretch slightly, and will break if put under excess pressure. Being individually knotted means that should the necklace break, only one bead will come free - and the beads are so tiny that the risk of choking is minimal.

Recent regulations have advised against the sale of amber teething necklaces due to this minuscule risk, which means you currently cannot buy these necklaces for infants under 36 months (until further notice) - however I would like to point out that there have been no reports of any infant choking or dying as a result of wearing one, and the beads are so tiny they're more likely to be swallowed and passed out the other end, than choked on! I think as adults we can make our own informed choice whether to use them or not - I've personally been using them for my children without any problems, and would recommend amber to any parent - but perhaps an anklet rather than a necklace if you are concerned (although necklaces work better being nearer to the mouth/source of pain).

A natural way to tackle the pain of teething.

My daughter has been really suffering with her teeth and we have had a few times of her being up at night crying with teething pain. Whilst reading about teething I came across the Amber necklace, I am so glad that I did.

The necklace is made of small smooth pieces of Baltic Amber. After each piece the strong thread of the necklace has been knotted so that in the rare event it snapped you would not end of up with Amber pieces everywhere. The necklace does up with a screw type fastener. I felt reassured by this as it looks like if the necklace , heaven forbid, should get caught on something it would snap open releasing the child.

The amber is a natural resin which contains healing oils. as the body warms up the pieces the amber releases the healing oils which are absorbed into the skin and therefore the bloodstream. It is said to provide natural pain relief which I honestly believe it does.

When ordering the amber necklace you have to select a size it is important to remember that you do not want it too tight but you also do not want it so loose that your child pulls on it. When ordering there were a number of colours to choose from such as honey, lemon and orange. The rarer colours are blue, green and white but as far as I know the colour does not make any difference to the healing powers. Some companies also let you choose the shape of the amber.

On receiving the necklace I was pleased with the appearance and I did pull at the necklace to test its durability as it was for my little baby. One of the few downsides to the necklace is more to do with the perception of others. I have had many comments from family, friends and strangers about her being too young for jewellery. I imagine this would be worse if she was a boy. Many people have not heard of amber necklaces for teething so even after explaining its benefits they often turn their nose up!

I truely believe that the amber works my evidence for this is since having the amber she has been a lot calmer even when her poor little cheeks are bright red and she is biting everything. Then we had two days of her screaming she wouldn't settle it was then that we realised the necklace had been taken off by granny!

As with everything this may not work for every child but it has for our daughter. You can buy amber anklets which do the same job but I avoided these as she loves playing with her feet and I felt she would pull it off. It is really important that the child does not chew on the beads as it is not a teething ring.

Finally the price, I paid £16 for my daughters, it came beautifully packaged and arrived quickly. Whilst researching the use of Amber before purchasing the necklace I saw a lot of warnings about not to be tempted by cheap necklaces as these can often be just plastic beads.

My only regret is that I did not know about his for my first child.

I'd definitely recommend this to parents who want a natural pain reliever for there teething LO's

This is amazing, and completely natural. I am a huge fan of genuine amber necklaces, and I bought this for Kai after reading an article about the benefits of amber teething necklaces (this was before he'd even started teething).

I bought it mainly because it is completely natural and has plenty of positive reviews and articles written about it online. Amber is a natural resin which warms with the body's temperature. It releases healing oils containing something called succunic acids, which are absorbed through the skin and into the blood stream.

Amber has heaps of healing properties and it can help strengthen the immune system. I paid around about £15 for Kai's necklace and I got it off Amazon. I thought this was a bit overpriced at first but I am impressed with how effective it was so I do think that all in all it was worth it.

Kai's necklace is red and black, but there is also an all red 1. I picked the black and red because it is a bit more boyish. My friends started asking heaps of questions when they saw Kai's necklace and we had some strange looks more than once. I felt like saying no, I'm not trying to make my son look like a girl or a fashion accessory!! and no, there is no choking hazard because he doesn't have to chew the beads for the pain relief to be effective.

When Kai was teething he didn't once have to have any ibuprofen or any other pain medications and other than being a bit more fussy & nursing more, we didn't actually notice when any of his four teeth came through, which I believe is thanks to this! Kai doesn't wear it as much any more but he still likes playing with it and because the thread is strong and the beads are chunky there is no worry that it will break or be a safety hazard.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

A must for any teething baby

Three children in I have spent many nights pacing the floor with a child, inconsolable with the pain of teething. Bottles and bottles of paracetamol and ibuprofen being used to help with the pain.

Then I discovered amber teething necklaces!!

The one I chose for my daughter has many different colour amber beads and sits round her neck at just the right length that she can't get it into her mouth. There is nothing special about an amber necklace other than it helps.

How does it work? Amber is a natural material that has healing properties and it helps with inflamation, therefore it simply helps the gums by releasing natural oils to help reduce the amount of pain the baby is in.

Now, does it work? Honestly? Yes, it does. I put it on my daughter when she was about two months old and believe me, I noticed the days she had it on. The day I really realised it was working she had been inconsolable all morning. Within an hour of having the necklace on she was calmer. Not calm but obviously feeling better. The necklace hasn't come off since!

They are not supposed to be worn at night for obvious reasons but my daughter is now 11 months old and it hasn't come off her neck since 2 months. Every bead is individually knotted so if the necklace should break only one bead would fall off. To me this makes it safe enough for her to wear. Plus it looks pretty - I'm constantly being complimented on her necklace.

All in all I would recommend these as an aid for teething. You will still need the medicines for those nights when nothing else will do but it just helps the symptoms. You still get the dribbling and the bad nappies, but baby isn't as grumpy as she would be. I paid £15 for mine and would pay that 10 times over for anything that helps.

An alternative way to relieve teething pain- as with most things, they're worth a try!

As any parent knows, teething can be an absolute nightmare. Both of my sons have dribbled from an early age, although at 7 months they are only just beginning to cut their first teeth.

When visiting my brother one day, I noticed that his son was wearing a necklace. He explained that it was a teething necklace and that his son was cutting his molars. The necklace was recommended by a friend of his from New Zealand, where they have apparently been used for years. Once his son started wearing it, he went from waking four times a night, to sleeping through once again and his teeth didn't cause him any more problems.

I thought that at £6.99, anything was worth a try! I bought them for my boys and they have worn them ever since. From a few hours after I put them on, I noticed a change in their behaviour. For want of a better word, they were much more chilled. Yesterday I noticed that one of my older twin's bottom teeth is just breaking the surface, but he has shown none of the usual teething signs. It's hard to say whether that is how he would have been without the necklace, but I'm not going to take it off and find out!

Teething necklaces are made from amber, a naturally occuring resin which has pain relieving properties. The necklaces are made from strong thread and are knotted between each bead so that if it broke only one bead would escape. The beads are too small to be a choking hazard and the necklaces are too short to be chewed. In fact, neither of the boys has ever shown any sign of knowing that they have got anything around their neck! They fasten with a secure screw clasp.

If you research these necklaces, you will probably come across a site which says that they are not suitable for children under three- seems a bit daft to me to market something as a teething necklace and not recommend it for the age group that needs it! As I said, my children have worn these since they were tiny and my nephew from about 12 months. They all wear them constantly including in the bath and at night and they seem to be doing some good. They look cute too!
