Weleda are a well established and ethical company with some 90 year history. Not only this, they are an ethical trader and have been operating with true "fair trade" principles in terms of working conditions, wages and ethical resourcing of ingredients, before the term was coined globally. Weleda themselves state that " Products are made of completely natural substances; artificial preservatives are never used. In addition to special cultivation and wild sources, raw materials are obtained through long term partnerships with suppliers. These partnerships are often established in cooperation with government development organisations, universities or international environmental protection groups. " http://www.weleda.com/90years/language=en/11181 The company offer a range of truly natural and homeopathic products for health and beauty (take note Body Shop), and my favourite of all of them is this one. It comes in a handy 200ml "upside down" bottle (recycled natch!) and has a gorgeous milky colour and creamy consistency. The scent is delicious and comes from the high Calendula (Marigold) content, a plant that has been in use for eons to assist in the repair and restoration of skin (amongst other things) A little goes a long way, it can be used in the bath, sink, on the body or hair. If it inevitably gets in the baby's eyes, this will not harm or sting. Unlike the "no more tears" rubbish that is marketed towards new mothers from animal testing multinationals, this really is super at preventing the bathtime shampoo in eye massacre. And also unlike the "no more tears" products which are choc full of horrible chemicals and perfumes- this is truly natural in every sense. I would never use a mainstream baby product now that I know more about what is in them and how they test on animals. We have used this since birth and are still using it now. Sometimes my daughter even lets me pinch a bit ;) In summary- Gorgeous and honestly natural product which although pricier than "johnsons", will not inflict chemicals on your precious baby's skin or eyes. * Kind to eyes * Dermatologically tested * Suitable for sensitive skin * Eco-friendly detergents - Made with sugar & coconut detergents which are some of the mildest, biodegradable and eco-friendly available. Ingredients: Weleda Calendula Shampoo & Bodywash: Water (Aqua), Coco-Glucoside, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Alcohol, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan), Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Xanthan Gum, Lactic Acid, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Limonene*, Linalool*. *from natural essential oils It can be purchased easily online and in health shops for between 4.99 and 6.99. A bottle lasts a long time and it is in my opinion worth every penny.
As I've mentioned before when I was pregnant with my little one, I always wanted high quality products for her and her dads sister worked in a health centre and was keen in giving me a speech about ethical products with no harsh chemicals etc etc so she brought me an entire goody bag of free Weleda products for us to try. One of them was this Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash. *** The Product *** This shampoo and body wash has the following benefits and features: * gently cleanses and softens a baby's hair and skin and is gentle on the eyes * formulated with the mildest, skin-friendly plant-based cleansers *extract from biodynamically grown Calendula flowers helps soothe the skin and scalp *light, delicate fragrance from pure, natural essential oils *free of synthetic fragrances, colours, preservatives and raw materials derived from mineral oils. * dermatologically tested and approves for the use on sensitive skin. *approved by paediatricians and dermatologists. Ideal for adults with sensitive/delicate skin. *** The Packaging/Pricing *** * it comes in a bright orange tube, with a top down lid * free standing, it can be placed in the bathroom or bedroom upright and is very sturdy * a 200ml bottle costs around £5 but from the centre I acquired it from it costs £6.50 so generally ranges from £5-£7. *** My Opinion *** I absolutely loved this product and used it religiously when my daughter was a baby (and when I was getting it for free!) It comes out the tube in a quite a thick white liquid, and I used it by applying it to my daughters sponge and squeezing it in the water to get bubbles. In comparison to other washes it doesn't create an overload of bubbles but with a newborn this was the least of my worries! It was very good for washing her skin and leaving it soft and supple. A 200ml tube lasted me about 3-4 months as little babies don't need too much washing every single day and a small amount really does go a long long way. The smell is very soft, and you can definitely smell the subtle calendula flowers, but as it isnt over bearing it doesn't take away from baby's lovely baby smell which I love! (makes me broody again to smell it!) In terms of using it as a shampoo it was wonderful! When she had a little bit of cradle this was amazing at removing dry flakes on the scalp and leaving her hair soft, silky and smooth. It definitely (even though it didn't advertise it as one of the features) is a tear free formula, is very soft and doesn't contain any harsh chemicals so my daughter suffered absolutely no adverse reactions to it and it left her face and body completely rash free. This brand has consistently won Mother and baby awards and is praised universally. When I first had my daughter in 2009 I hardly saw this range on the shelves of local pharmacists and supermarkets but I have since now seen it more readily available in large boots stores and superdrug which means its now more mainstream so mums out there have more options to base their decisions on! I have since stopped using it as my daughter is no longer a baby (so seems unneccesary to use baby products on her) and for £6.50 a pop I didn't feel the need to shell out for it when she can happily use other widely available high street brands. I would 100% recommend this shampoo and body wash to all new mums out there! Its soft, gentle, high quality and ethical so we know it is good for our babies and their skin! It's a bit more on the pricey side but you can't put a price on the happiness and well being on our little bundles of joy!
I have reviewed the Calendula Bath Cream and although I rated it highly it does not compare to the Shampoo and Bodywash, not that the bath cream is bad it's just that the shampoo/body wash is so good I would be devastated if it was discontinued. My son has very sensitive skin and we use the bath cream, this product and Lush's Dream Cream and this trio of products has calmed his eczema and has stopped the itching & bleeding that was brought about by the evil Johnsons tip to toe bodywash - suitable for newborns my bum! The showergel/shampoo container is a bright yellow tube which stands with the cap at the bottom which means you don't have to struggle getting the last bit out. The product is a white cream which is not to thick and not too runny about the same consistency as natural yogurt which makes it easy to stroke through your little ones hair and body. I should also note that the cream doesn't irritate the eyes which is an absolute must when washing your little one's eyes as the slightest sting and that's bathtime cut short and made into a traumatic experience for both you and little one. The smell is devine and we both enjoy the aroma of this product as it's calming and helps aid snooziness which is a bonus. I personally believe that this product is a very effective cleanser of the scalp and body without drying and actually leaves my little one's skin very soft without any redness. We have been using this product for 5 months and really love it and like the fact that it contains Calendula (antiseptic flower and effective in preventing/treating cradle cap), almond oil (moisturises) and is free of parabens and petrochemical products which are irritating to the skin and in pretty much most baby products.
Since my daughter was born I have been looking for different products to use on her delicate skin instead of the usual brand names that are out there at the moment. I came across Weleda Calendula Shampoo and Bodywash in a baby magazine and read it received a gold award from Mother and Baby Magazine; it has awarded Best Skincare Range. So off I went to find out more on the range. Weleda has been running for over 80 years, they believe in physical, mental and social wellbeing. They create products that are kind to the environment and our local communities. Their aim is to help everyone from newborns to the elderly, whether it will be in skincare or in heath, and give them the best quality products from the best quality ingredients. Fresh ingredients are only used in their products, plants used include; Almond, Arnica, Birch, Calendula, Citrus, Iris, Lavender, Pomegranate, Rosemary, Sea Buckthorn and Wild Rose. Because of their love for fresh ingredients Weleda is a great choice anthroposophic and homeopathic, being the first choice in hospitals, clinics, doctors, pharmacists, herbalists and other health practitioners. They have established over 100 global fair trading partnerships. So great quality products and a brand that looks and cares for the environment, what more could you ask for? I also find on my search Weleda has products that are suitable for vegans and vegetarians; they also tell you what are not suitable for diabetics and those on a gluten free diet. How many other brands deliver that service? Weleda.co.uk has lots of products in their baby range ranging from skin care, bath time and health. There are also products for adults, whether you're looking for skincare, hair care, oral care and health care. Weleda Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash caught my eye at £6.95 for a 200ml tube. The packaging for this product is very bright yellow/orange. Yellow bring at the top and gently down the bottle it fades into the orange colour with a white flip top lid that the product sits on. The tube is a flexible plastic that is easy to squeeze the product out. Weleda say this product is suitable for vegans, gently cleanses and cares for your children's delicate skin and hair. The product is also friendly to eyes, so there will be no more tears at bath time. Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash has been formulated with the mildest, skin friendly plant based cleanser. Because of the plant based extracts I thought it would be good for my daughter's eczema, as it is free of synthetic fragrances, colours, preservatives and raw materials from mineral oils. She gets eczema quite often, which can occur anywhere on her body. The product is very concentrated and only a small amount is needed, the product is white in colour and very creamy, yet feels light to the touch. You can smell the range of essential oils and plants used including Calendula, Sweet Almond Oil and Sesame Seed Oil. The fragrance is light and not over powering at all. With contact with water it foams beautifully on the hair and skin and rinses off just as easily. There have been a few times she has taken the bubbles off my hands and rubbed her face with it while catching her eyes with the bubbles. Although I have wiped it away straight away there we're no tears and she carried on playing as if nothing had happened. On washing her skin the product feels very soft and creamy, you can tell it is moisturising and will be good for her skin. On her hair and skin it washes off very easily while leaving the delicate scent on her. After half an hour in the bath her skin is left very soft and her eczema doesn't seem as red and angry, instead it is softer and ready for a moisturiser. Her wet hair is easy to brush through without any tangles, dries quickly and is beautifully soft while looking healthy and shiny once dry. When her eczema flairs up and after a few times in the bath I can see a difference, it's not gone but it looks less angry and dry looking, please don't rely on this product though just to sort the problem out. The area still needs moisturising with eczema cream that you can get from your doctors or pharmacist. In the past I have bought a well known baby brand and used that on my daughter, within a few baths and with her eczema under control I thought it might be a good idea to try something different. It was a wrong decision as her skin dried out and her eczema faired up, which is something I didn't expect and not something I will be repeating. A good thing about the product and because it sits on its lid, even though I am nearly finished I am still managing to get all the product out, so no wastage. The packaging can be recycled, which keeps in with their environment issues. I have had this product I would say 9 months and I am just coming to the end, absolutely great value for money. This really is a beautiful product and a joy to use on my daughter, defiantly a gold star from me.
