It looks good ... but it's no good

Anyone who has kids knows there is a list of essentials you need to get before the bundle of joy arrives. One of these is a changing mat. As I had some John Lewis vouchers, I decided to get my changing mat from there - and in fact bought two, which was definitely NOT essential but I wanted to have one downstairs and one upstairs.

The mat itself is white with plastic covering with a multi-coloured spot design in yellow, red and light blue. The mat is nice looking - not too babyish and neutral enough to be unisex. The mat is flat with raised sponge padding around three sides.

I have to say it was very helpful for me to have somewhere to change my baby both upstairs and downstairs ... and a bit of a luxury! But having two mats turned out to be useful for another reason...

After just a few months of use, the plastic covering on the raised sides of the mats started to split. Eventually I threw away one of the mats and although, after 18 months, I do continue to use the other one, the sides are full of splits and several bits of plastic have peeled. Although I tolerate this now, if it had been this bad when my daughter was any younger I would have had to throw the mat away. As it is I put up with it now as I won't need it much longer and I don't want to have to buy another one at this stage. The main area of the mat is fine and still in perfect condition.

As the mats were nearly £9 each I was very disappointed at the poor quality of the plastic covering. Although I'm not a changing mat expert, I am sure there are other mats out there (probably cheaper ones!) that have a longer shelf life than this one!
