Needing to add some toys to my eldest daughters Bayala range by Schleich within the World of Fantasy range, I wanted a new edition to the range that could be a 'baddy' for her to play with. The Bayala range is a collection of fantastical creatures such as fairies, elves, dragons, horses, and unicorns, which can be bought individually to make a set of toys to play with.
When searching on the internet there were many individual items that could be baddy's but I particularly liked the Bilara. In comparison to some of the mean looking dragons or wicked looking horses, I liked that this one appears to be deceptively friendly! She is described by Schleich as a hauntingly beautiful sorceress riding a dark unicorn, and I think the description fits the bill. I have overheard my daughter playing with this particular figure and she doesn't always cast her as evil! Sometimes she is a mysterious witch in the woods who can heal wounded horses, unicorns and fairies and I just love to listen to her playing like this when I can hear her imagination come to life. I quite like that this figure is a dark unicorn rather than the angelic white ones we usually see.
The Schleich ranges are fantastic for imaginative play and they can be added to and built as a child wishes. Perfect pocket money prices at around £10 for this particular model, the price can be easily achieved by a child when they save up pocket money for a few weeks.
The detailing that goes into each and every figure by Schleich is fantastic and much like the quality you would find with Sylvanean Families, which makes them unbeatable value and much loved toys that will last. Tough and durable, the plastic figurine can't really be damaged in any way, although my daughter guards these figures with her life and looks after them well. The figures are hand painted and before I bought the Bilara figure I was a little apprehensive that some people had been disappointed by the paintwork on this particular model. When I received mine I was pleased to see that this wasn't the case and I needn't have worried. The detailing on this model is beautiful. The unicorn has sections of metallic / silvery paintwork which makes it look so enchanting, while the paint on the sorceress is just as good. The staff could have been painted a little bit better but it is so small that it would have been difficult to add any detailing.
The thing I like best about these items is the size of them means that if we are going out for a meal or a long car journey, my daughter can fit one or two in a little bag. This fits well with Schleich's motto of 'Anywhere's a playground'.
I do love to watch my daughter play with these figures, and wish they had been around when I was a child.
