The Doctor Who toy universe is vast and growing quickly. Character Options, who produce the toys have already got several figures lined up for this March and April (2010) for when Matt Smith takes over as the Doctor.
The older figure range includes the standard characters like the Doctor, Rose and various Daleks, but there is also a deluxe figure range. These figures are larger than the rest of the toys and are somewhat special. Empress Racnoss is part of the deluxe collection and is a curious creature. She is part spider and part woman and looks like she might have belonged in Harry Potter rather than Doctor Who.
The toy is about twenty odd inches making it an eye catcher. The spindly legs give it some support, but are also a little frail. Younger children could not chuck this around the lounge or garden without it eventually snapping. I would therefore advise that she is for display purpose only or very gentle playing. Wonderful colours grace the body, a menage of reds, oranges and blacks giving it a warm and authentic look. The head is obviously a talking point, as it has a woman's face poking out of it. She looks like a queen, regal and commanding and ready to issue orders. The toy is chunky on the body and satisfying to hold, but the legs are very frail.
The toy will set you back anything up to fifteen pounds. I saw one go on an auction site for ten pounds the other night, which is a better price, so shop around to get the best bargain. She does not come with any extras unfortunately, but the sheer size and scale of the toy more than make up for this.
Movement might be a tad restricted on the Racnoss, but you could still stage a standoff between her and the Doctor. Is she worth buying? Well, it is one of the rarer of the toys so I would say yes, if you can bite the bullet and fork out the cash.
Woah! At first sight, this product was perhaps the most impressive to date int he excellent Character Options range. My son was (and still is) a massive Doctor Who fan and he wanted to buy this Empress of Racnoss figure as soon as she featured in the Christmas Special. After negotiating a suitable contribution from his pocket money, I purchased the product and that's when the problems started.
The legs were unbelievably flimsy, particularly at the screw joints with the main body of the spider. In the end, all six legs cracked at or around the screw and I had to take the product back to the retailer. Character Options (who were very good in dealing with my complaint) explained that a batch of these figures were defective due to problems with the manufacturing process.
Make sure that you check the details of the faulty batch before yoy buy one of these figures. Character Options were very good, but I'm not sure of the extent of the problem or if the faulty batch was recalled.
It's Christmas time again and the 'Pilot Fish' robots are back on Earth once more, disguised again, as killer Santas. This time they are under the control of a giant semi-humanoid arachnid from deep space. Called the Empress of the Racnoss, She is a half humanoid half spider creature intent on taking over the Earth for her own ends. Having travelled across half the Galaxy in her giant 'Webship' and with thousands of spiders at her command, even The Doctor may not be able to thwart her evil plans.
